Got my driftwood last night from our local river next to the golf course...I tripped on it while I was walking my dog...man this driftwood is very unique...it's about 18" with some nice texture...worth the 🚶.

Tannins are actually good for fish. Especially if they are recovering from an illness and they help the fish regrow torn fins easier.

To the people asking how long to boil. You do it longer then 2hrs do it until the point to where there is hardly any tint in the pot are to where there is a very significant change in water color I have a very big piece of driftwood and been boiling it for around 10hrs and there is still a tint but nowhere near what it was
@bigsky4454 жыл бұрын
I couldn't hurt to do it a second time.. personally, I boil mine for about 20-30 min & call it good. Not much can survive boiling water for more than 60sec... the brown water contains tannins, tannins are super powerful antibiotics & antibacterial! Why waste it? I let boiled water cool then dump it in an old large pickle jar & store it in my pantry. When I do water changes, ever 3 or for times (about once a month or so..) I add the tannin water to my aquariums. It works wonders & keeps my aquariums healthy & disease & parasite free! Very good for aquatic life & in the wild it is the only (natural meds) they get. Brown water for a week is well worth healthy livestock in my aquariums. Dont waste it, use it! 👍👍

If you're living in the UK - boil the water in the kettle first before adding to the pot and driftwood to make it faster xD (I still find it really funny that hardly anyone outside of the UK and some Asian countries use electric kettles xD)
@stevenbolton34799 жыл бұрын
As a British living in Switzerland I had to import a proper kettle. xD

If I were in a situation where I needed to allow the driftwood to dry out again before placing into the tank, should I boil once more before adding it in or just rinse down and place?

Its not the air pockets, but the volumetruc mass density of the material that lets the woord float.

it will regain its buoyancy if not used timely. I'd boil ,and then submerge the wood in normal water for a month before putting it in the aquarium

What kind of wood was it? I believe I got some red cedar wood and it was in water. The bark peeled right off. It’s real hard wood and doesn’t seem to be releasing tannings in the tub j put it in for soaking. I read it’s safe but then I read it’s unsafe. Any experience with using red cedar?
