Disclaimer: I am not an historian, I did some research about the names but I'm not claiming that it's 100% accurate for some of them. Pronunciation should still be accurate I also haven't done the Archon quest yet so maybe there were a few more in there that I missed Edit: oh my god I didn't expect the vid to explode like this, thank you for subscribing and liking the video it means a lot!

@@Claushanga I'm not sure about that one to be fair, it might be one or the other the name is really old and I couldn't find any reliable source for the pronunciation. But it just sounds more logic as a french speaker to use the one closer to the English pronunciation in this case but I might be wrong

Manet is French, they probably got the name from the surname of Édouard Manet. Arouet is also a French surname, probably from the surname of François-Marie Arouet. Boucicaut, real name Jean II Le Maingre, was a French military leader. Bruneau is a correct spelling as well but is usually used as a surname. Boileau similarly likely is from Nicolas Boileau-Despréaux. Mequignon probably comes from Auguste Eugène Méquignon. Moniotte is also a surname. As you can see a number of the NPC names are surnames of notable French figures which I think is pretty cool. Lilienne is French, but very uncommon... I believe Freminet actually comes from diver Sieur Fréminet and not the painter Martin Fréminet There are a number of others though that you were right about that aren't French. Like Liath and Blathine are Irish, Vaneigem is Dutch, and Virgil and Gracie are Latin, although Gracie is used in a lot of languages. There's also a couple that aren't real names.

@@colorbar.sthey say they like to stick to one way of pronouncing everything, as in the most western way possible, so stuff like Tighnari gets pronounced like “Tie-nari” to go with “sigh” or “nigh” instead of “tigg-nari” (or the nearest equivalent to the original) but then i hear stuff like Focalors pronounced kinda similiar to the french pronounciation with them going “fo-sal-ors” which breaks their own rule bc if they were gonna pronounce it how they said they were gonna it wouldve definitely been “fo-cal-ors” with the hard ‘c’ so uhhhhh yeah they kinda shit it’s so inconsistent that back when there was that drama about the dub company that genshin uses for the english dub went under fire people straight up made a theory that if the company was rlly so shitty then maybe they were the reason all the sumeru names were so badly pronounced (cause maybe they have some hand in how they director directs the pronounciations). also localization in general i mean raiden’s signature’s name was supposed to be a reference to a famous sword in japan (Kusanagi no Tsurugi) but then got changed from Kusanagi no Inabikari to Engulfing Lightning which sounds cool but i miss the old version which couldve also been called Grasscutter’s Light in english or something and is IMO even cooler. Idk its been 2 years and i’m still a bit salty.

Little trivia about Focalors' pronunciation. The pronunciation adopted in Chinese-Japanese-Korean version is based on the Latin root of the name while in English it has been altered: in all the three Asian versions, Focalors is pronounced with a hard C (like in "cat") while the English dub, and only the English one, opted for an "S" sound (like in "centre"). Technically the correct one is the Asian as, like all other godly entities in Genshin, Focalors too is named after a demon: namely Focalor, 41st demon and Great Duke of Hell, who could command winds and seas, and drowner of men - hence the prophecy of Fontaine being submerged with only Focalors remaining. Personally, as an Italian, since it's Latin and not French, I pronounce it as it's written with the hard C sound (and also keeping in mind that the English adaptation of Genshin is notorious for distorting the names in other languages - poor voice actors...), but in the French and Spanish versions, she is called "Foçalors" with the Ç (the C with the cedilla), so in these versions it would correctly be pronounced as if it was normal French using the "S" sound ("garçon", "façade").
@user-wj2ov8kq1o
@user-wj2ov8kq1o 10 ай бұрын
Since foçalors is based on the demon name from Solomon's lesser key Focalor Have your asked any historians if french and spanish countries in the past pronounced the name "Focalor" with the "S" sound. Both language are latin rooted so i'm curious what was the process to having from the "K" sound to be transformed into "S" sound.
@Syiepherze
@Syiepherze 10 ай бұрын
@@user-wj2ov8kq1oIn the case of the words "garçon" and "façade", they ultimately derive their cedillas from the Ecclesiastical (as opposed to the older Classical) Latin pronunciations of garciō and facia (where C before i is a "ch" sound, similar to modern Italian). The name Focalors is similar to the Latin "fōcāles", which refers to a kind of neckcloth. The Ecclesiastical pronunciation of this uses a hard "k" sound like the Classical, which makes this more confusing lol Another example of the soft C in French is, well, "France" (demonym français). This comes from Latin "Francia", with the soft sound seemingly coming from the Ecclesiastical pronunciation again. A person from Francia is Francus (Frank), and the pronunciation seemingly uses a hard K in both Classical and Ecclesiastical. So the only way I think the cedilla in Foçalors can be explained is if her name was at one point spelled with a "CI", "CAE", "COE" or "CE". My guess is her name might have previously been something like "Focialōra" in Latin, I honestly dk lmao

@@Syiepherze Exactly. Since the Lesser Key of Salomon (the book in which daemons were listed and described taking content from older files back even to Hebrew) as an ecclesiastical tome it's written in Latin, what you said applies: therefore Focalor is pronounced "fokalor". Furthermore, thank you for explaining all of it in a better way than I could.

Thank you so much for this my dear French friend❤ An Italian KZfaqr made a video with the Italian names of the main characters in Genshin (the most of them are the names of the Harbingers whose where taken from the Italian Theatre of Comedy, Venti, etc), his name is Zergantis 😊

For anyone curious, Christian De Neuvillette is one of the 3 main characters of Cyrano de Bergerac, a play by Edmond Rostand (haven't watched Cyrano with Peter DInklage but I really haven't heard much good about it). If you expect Cyrano to appear later, well don't, because you saw him! Cyrano is actually a surname, his true name being Savinien De Cyrano, and Ligniere IS a friend of Cyrano in the play. Their dialogue in the game is a ref to what happens in the play. But we'll never get to play Savinien... unless he pulls a Rana? As for other names, many like Arouet, and Manet are the surnames of old famous french people (Arouet is Voltaire's true surname, Boileau and Riqueti De Mirabeau are authors, Corneille a playwright, Boucicaut a businessman, Manet a painter, and Vaneigem a belgian writer). Also in Lyney's story quest, the person introducing him is Robert Houdin, known as Houdini!
@brondermody3409
@brondermody3409 10 ай бұрын
Lyney and Lynette are likely angelicised versions of the Welsh word Llyn (lake). By themselves they'd sound similar to the EN version but with the Welsh Ll (a sort of deep hiss), but considering they have added endings of ey and ette then it's likely Lyney is pronounced similar to (Ll)enny and (Ll)ennette.

I think Fontaine is more like a Mediterranean, European-soft-Steampunk mix, leaning heavily on the Frech/Venice aesthetic and general Impresionist art around the continent. Some of the names are actually Spanish (García, Belén, Guijarro, Xavier... Garcia and Guijarro are actually surnames though, much like the case with many of the "french" NPCs.

We actually do use the word denouement in English. It's not like it's super common or anything, but it's at least a fairly well established loan word. How heavily the pronunciation is Anglicized sort of varies by speaker, but there are some people who pronounce it fairly close to the French word. Others say it more like "day new mon" (I'd type out the IPA but I'm not on my phone so I don't have easy access to an IPA keyboard)
