Today I’m showing you how to connect a washing machine and tumble dryer to a single standpipe so you can drain your tumble dryer automatically without having to empty the water tank. This is specifically for a STANDPIPE connection. There are other connectors available for under the sink at funny angles etc.

@@GosforthHandyman And takes twice as long (or more) to dry a (smaller) batch of clothes. Not too bad if you don't mind the thing running forever. Oh and did I mention the much higher cost of buying a heat pump dryer in the first place plus thier added functional complexity. Take out an insurance plan would be the best bet!

@keithpearson7539 us white goods engineers don't like repairing them either. Room too hot or too cold they won't work, filters slightly clogged, won't work, compressors fail which don't get repaired, the whole base has to be replaced. I did a belt change on one the other day, took me 2 hours, a condenser dryer belt can be done in about 20 mins.

I've recently got rid of an immersion tank and put a washing machine/heat pump dryer in the cupboard that used to be there. I came up with a different solution because my dryer is on a (heavily engineered) shelf so the dryer and washer can be moved independently of each other. It was cleaner in my case to extend the standpipe through the countertop and have two 40mm tees with the appliance hose adaptors on them at the right height for either appliance. Then I stuck an air admittance valve on the top as overkill (I probably could have left it vented but at least it stops anything falling or crawling down the standpipe). It took me a while to figure out the best solution for this problem, I think because stacked washer dryers are more of an American thing and most info and products you can find on Google are for that part of the world. It's good you've made this video to fill that void for people in the UK.

Cheers, I had just jammed the two hoses in the same stand pipe as the dryer one is only about 15mm or so. Will grab one of these for peace of mind as I knew all along it was a bodge and it's just below the electrics.

Something to note - any two-into-one fitting needs to either have some disruption at the joint - which this fitting has in the form of the siphon break, or needs to be a Y-shaped fitting, where the flow of the waste water is in the direction of the standpipe - *NOT* the other waste line! A T-piece is not suitable, as not only will waste water be pumped into the other machine attached to the fitting, but the venturi effect will also pull water up from the u-bend, and potentially the sewer, along with it. Yes, I have seen a T-piece in situ and had to replace it, because the landlord was a silly billy and wondering why the dishwasher was filling up with the water from the washing machine.
@Simonsimon-fy3hq

Maybe the T piece has a baffle inside to disrupt the flow? It does seem to be shaped at the top which could be a interior fitting?

Great solution. I’m not a plumber but I am a tradesman and like learning different skills and trades. I didn’t know this apparatus existed, personally I don’t like the idea of the wastes being jubilee clipped to the outside of the fitting in case it ever came loose. I would much prefer these outlets to sit inside. I have thought about another solution and would be interested to hear your thoughts. If you were to solvent welt a T to the upstand just above the trap and create another upstand the same height can you see any issues with this? Basically two upstands feeding waste into the same pipe, one for the washer and one for the dryer.
@mr.dahliaking.202
@mr.dahliaking.202 10 ай бұрын
Aww yes, the sneaky siphon... I remember when we first moved in into our new home, our washing machine always seemed to somehow loose all its water during the main cycle. We never understood where it was going, and it was gotten to a point where my mom had a timer to witch she would add more and more water into the machine trough the dispenser drawer so the cycle would continue. Then we found the reason. The stand pipe with a P trap set on the floor had stuck in a permanent syphon, as the P trap was directly connected to the main stack opf the house and so the ventouri effect from unvented stack always created the negative pressure in the pipe itself and it always drew out the water from the washer. I moved the stand pipe above the machine and it stopped. The gravitational pull of the water in the machine was enough to overcome the ventouri effect.

Literally just encountered this with a new house and new dryer. (In the UK you just can't buy vented any more, as far as my searching could find) I shall get one of your recommended kits thanks :-) I also highly recommend you keep those blanking plugs under your kitchen sink, they are the most useful to have on hand when moving or disconecting a machine. No more rags in the waste pipe or water dribbling out of the pipe when you pull it through. Really useful piece of rubbish to keep handy for that day a machine breaks down.

My washing machine and tumble dryer are connected to the same standpipe via the time-honoured method of shoehorning them both in :) Seems to work ok - the standpipe flexes just enough into an ovoid shape for them to both go in, although obviously not as neat as your solution with the proper fitting.

Shoving the flexible hose into the stand pipe worked just fine for me for 18 months too. My neighbours downstairs would've much preferred I fitted it more like Andy did here though (my old landlord's place had the back of the washing machine area almost completely inaccessible though, so I'm not sure how that could be accomplished at all, without a stupidly long hose). Unfortunately the landlord's boiler sprung a leak, and ruined the neighbours ceiling before my washing machine bodge fitting was ever a problem :(~. If you intend to leave a washing somewhere for more than 2 years, the people below it will thank you for connecting it this way, to prevent leaks.

I live in a rented duplex (semi-detached in the UK, yes?) and my only assumption is that the dryer vents up to the attic because I have not found an outside outlet. Now that I know this is available, I may need to find a new dryer!

Best advice would be to potential owners of heat pump dryers is that 1. They DO NOT work in garages or sheds or cold rooms/ cold parts of a house in the colder parts of the year and their drying performance drops off the cooler it gets, and 2. If you have ever owned a conventional dryer you have to accept that the normal drying time period that you enjoyed or experienced with a conventional drier will probably at least be doubled. I.e if you are inna hurry you can forget throwing one or two items in and them being dried in 20 mins, its a completely different method not unlike a fridge and actually heat pump dryers do not have any kind of heating element in them at all.

Another way….Connect a side t to existing stand pipe 4” down. Add a spout to T. So wash machine goes into open standpipe as normal, dishy connects to spout. This is better if both pipes are coming from one side of standpipe, otherwise a t spout means one hose has to loop over.

TBH for winter clothes drying since the hike in electric prices we've hardly used the electric tumble dryer & opted for a dehumidifier & a clothes horse in the bathroom instead. Drys the clothes & heats the room at the same time. In the summer, & on any dry day, it's the old fashioned clothes line in the garden for us.

@@GosforthHandyman Yep. And +5c is quite low, some can't operate below +10c. It's the same with some fridges. We also have a small overflow fridge in our garage. When it gets cold we turn it off & leave the door open because cos it won't run😆

If you can find an old pre 2004"LEC " fridge second hand ( still hundreds out there they go on forever) They were designed back in the 70's for unheated kitchens and never updated . Theyll work down to - 3 degrees. They have a heater kicks in and pre heats the refrigerant.

@@Mitch-Hendren Yes but what refrigerant? My 30 year old Twin compressor Scandinova Fridge Freezer ran on R22 which is a banned refrigerant now. It worked fine as as a Fridge & Freezer down to 0c in my garage no trouble. However, most of the new Fridges /Freezers are now running on R290 (Propane) - the same stuff you use for your gas BBQ!! They struggle to operate below 10c ambient temps. Admittedly it's only a small amount of R290 in the Fridge (perhaps 200-300 grams) however, it's flammable / explosive & there have been cases of fridges blowing up & causing considerable damage. Google it. In many ways I wish I had kept my old fridge/freezer instead of getting a new one?

I just threw the standpipe out , put a Mcalpine WM1 trap in place , took the spigot out of the tee , a short piece of waste pipe , an elbow and another piece of waste pipe . And an 1,1/2" mi x 40mm into the thread and a piece of waste and lo and behold i had two standpipes . As for ptfe , you shouldn't need that if done correctly. Ps started plumbing in 79

Hmmmm I can't quite get my head around how this can work properly. The water from the washing machine will come out at fairly high pressure; whereas the condensation water from the tumble dryer will be a trickle. The problem I perceive is the washing machine outlet water will flow directly across the McAlpine item and be forced into the tumble dryer hose on the other side. Am I missing something?

To be fair to the people trying to connect this under their sinks, my dishwasher does connect to the sink waste in a similar manner. The overflow must act as the vent though, as there no holes underneath to flood the cupboard! 😮

When we moved in here 40+ years ago, there was a standpipe for the washer on the back wall of the attached garage that fed through the wall into the grid outside. So we simply plugged in & connected our washer up. After a while - can't now remember how long it was - the drain started to back up and overflow each time the washer was used. So we checked the washer, made sure the standpipe was clear and did everything else we could think of ... but it kept right on backing up. So eventually I decided I had to dig down and trace the drain back to the main, looking for a blockage. It headed that way but didn't connect where I expected. Can someone please explain why a previous owner had connected their washer to a soakaway? 🤔 🤣

Nor had I till a few days ago. We've always had cheap vented dryers. After 23 years, we had to get a new washing machine. Got one. Then had emails about driers. There are now three types: vent to outside; condenser (every version we've seen owned by friends have been disappointing); heat transfer - new to us, take the heat out of the wet warm air removed from the washing and send cool water to standpipe. They can be AAA or AA and save £550+ over the life of the product, depending on electricity prices. Lots of astonished delighted reviews.

Why does your dryer need a drain? Do your washers not do spin dry? We are in Canada and never heard of this.Used to live in UK (45yrs ago) and don't remember them there either.
@type17
@type17 10 ай бұрын
Older dryers needed a vent to outside, to expel all of the hot, moist air, which led to a lot of heat being wasted, and when (lazy) people didn't bother making a hole in their wall to install a vent, there were huge issues with condensation and mould in the house/apartment. Condensing dryers fixed these issues, but stored the resulting water in a tank that needed frequent emptying, or the machine stops. Modern dryers can be connected to a drain, as above, finally sorting that issue out. Of course washers have a spin cycle, but UK/Irish winters are terrible for drying clothes outside, with November - February days frequently having temperatures just above freezing with 80-99% humidity, so zero outside clothes drying is possible.

@Harani66 10 ай бұрын
Spin dry is not 100% hence the need for a dryer The steam driven off by the drying process is condensed back into water ( on a non vented unit) and draining it away is an alternative to having to constantly empty out a removable drawer.
