Definitely very important to keep cleaning your pruning scissors with each cut. I lost two Shaina JMs a while back as a result of not doing so. Infection set-in and I had lost each of them within weeks. I now use Rubbing Alcohol which I had bought off Amazon and spray wet my pruning scissors after each cut. I’m taking no chances as they say! But my approach to pruning is to remove dead, diseased , damaged and also branches that are showing signs of growing back into the main central branches! I have made my pruning late season but will make my next pruning session on some of my JMs early next Spring - as long as no frost is forecast here in the UK.

Great video and information ... I LOVE to prune and after watching you two I'm a bit more confident that I'm doing most things correctly!!! One thing I always keep in mind, I was told once that a butterfly should be able to soar thru a japanese maple without touching it wings on any branch ... and I also keep in mind that mistakes happen, but just like a good (or bad) haircut - it'll grow back and be okee dokee. Thanks for all the info, inspiration and encouragement - I, for one, certainly do appreciate it all !!!

If you’re not moving for a couple of months (or cross country)you could look into air layering some branches of your existing trees so you can take ‘em to your new place. There’s quite a few videos on how to do this if you don’t know how; I recommend the ones on Heron’s nursery channel. Cheers!

I is now early May...my newest Bloodgood did not leaf out...I was told not to prune but I did lightly prune to encourage it to grow...I realize I volcanoed the trunk over the winter...so I opened it up...I added root stimulant thinking maybe that was the problem being a new planting...I just added and other mild nutrient to help. I can tell it is not dead but I don't know if it will come back..

Oh heavens! Thank you for this! I'm new to growing Japanese maples and wasn't sure if I was pruning properly. Turns out I am. Whew! Question: I have a redbark and last year when we had the 2 freezes it just looked like a big popsicle. It killed the top 2/3 of the tree. I waited until almost fall to see if it was going to do anything on that part. It didn't so I cut it out. It now has long new branches on the bottom remaining trunk. Will it still grow into a normal size redbark? If you have any suggestions I'll gladly take them. Thanks. I live in zone 7a middle TN.

You guys are a great team, this was so informative and you're so right about everyone having different opinions on pruning! I started laughing watching your faces cutting even before your joke. 😁 It's important to concentrate, lol. My question for you is for variegated Maples. I have a 7 gal Oridono Nishiki and was wondering about how much pruning I should do for the best coloration? Your video about it says a "slight" trim but I'm not sure how much that is? An inch or less? Should I clip every branch early each Spring?
@MrMapleShow
@MrMapleShow 2 жыл бұрын
I’ll try to make a video on that soon! Trimming back new growth to a few buds and taking out twiggy growth like we did in this video is what I recommend

I know it's not a Japanese maple, but the Shantung I have... mentioned that one before, I found some girdling roots and cut them off, exposed the flare and the bald tips are finally getting to grow. I'd LIKE to thin out the canopy a little for air flow, but am I too late in the season? It's young, 30 gal planted last November. I was told not to touch it for one year. At all. Under any circumstances unless spring is dead. I'm not sure if the tree has something though. The leaves (in my opinion) are starting to discolor, shrivel slightly and some (not many) are falling off at a very small size. I don't want to prune it and accidentally make anything worse. But I think it could use a light pruning to help out grow better. Especially since there were some pretty tight roots that were probably inhibiting it (I've noticed a flush of new leaves since taking those off) Really appreciate yalls knowledge, thank you 😊 🙏

Depends on why all the branches are on one side. Is it planted up against a house? Or does it only get sun on one side? You can always twist and stake one of the branches in the upright position and let it grow for a year

Typically they do even out. You can prune to encourage but sometimes staking up a leader and letting it make an umbrella is an easy way to reshape too

Good evening - I watched your pruning video and worked diligently to groom my 20+yr old lace leaf. We had extreme weather in zone 7 in Dec/Jan. with temps at 0 for several hours and snow. We always cover /tarp our maple, and we had two lights under the tarp, but we still suffered loss. What was an eye catching, jaw dropping dwarf lace leaf - now has large holes in the canopy. There are several new shoots coming off the trunk of the tree. I have always fertilized with camellia food. Other than pruning, babying, and fertilizing, what can I do to hope in the next few years that I can get this tree back to its top condition? Thanks for all the help from the pruning video. I had plenty of dead portions on the lace leaf.
@MrMapleShow
@MrMapleShow Жыл бұрын
Vigorous pruning in early spring before it leafs will give the most gains in growth. Liquid fertilizers also work great. These are the main steps to recovering. Sometimes heat lights can activate them and cause more harm. I’ve had that happen before

I looked at them today and am a little puzzled if it's possible to decrease their width. I'm not seeing where to prune them to reduce width honestly. The inside of the tree is fairly empty with not much to reduce. Am I correct in thinking you really can't reduce the width of a mature tree? Thanks!
