Ford 8.8 Time! Today Ill show you guys how to remove an explorer 8.8 without any power tools. Cave man style! This rear end is a great option to do a 4 wheel disk brake conversion and is a solid axle for drag racing!

The Door stickers will list the axle. Check the door before diving underneath to verify. ---Just my two cents.

Don't think it's mentioned in the video or comments, but from my limited research before doing this, I believe the diff bolts are 5/16. At least I hope so, bc that's the socket I'm bringing.

Maybe comment on how you determined it was a good rearend. With it off the ground how much play can you expect from left or right wheels
@NightWrencher

I had recorded a section explaining that but I cut it during editing. If Im just junkyard scrounging I usually just go by the wear on the pinions and ring gear. From my experience, these diffs wear super fast once the fluid goes low. If I can find one with little to no galling, thats the one I take home.

The most common one would be the one off the mid to late explorers. Not all of them came with the factory LSD so you can use the door jam sticker to narrow down your search at the junkyard.

So you took one off from an explorer sport v6?
@NightWrencher
@NightWrencher 4 жыл бұрын
It doesnt have to be specifically sport V6. Look at the door jam sticker for "D1" "D2" "D4" "D5" or "L73" then look at the axle tag to verify what ratio it is.

@NightWrencher
@NightWrencher 3 жыл бұрын
You look for damaged teeth with bad wear pattern and you make sure the fluid still feels like oil and not goop. If you can spin the tires, try to listen for growling or scaping

@NightWrencher
@NightWrencher 2 жыл бұрын
I will bolt up but don't think the axles would work with the LSD carrier because as far as I know the explorer uses 31 spline axles and the CV uses 28 spline but if the CV also uses 31 spline its should work.

If you've swapped it to a ford 8.8 housing then yes. If youre using the stock BMW housing then no
@gnarledcaptaintheduck9207
@gnarledcaptaintheduck9207 3 жыл бұрын
@@NightWrencher could you direct me to a video I dont know what you mean by the housing on a differential. Like put do you mean the axle?
@NightWrencher
@NightWrencher 3 жыл бұрын
@@gnarledcaptaintheduck9207 The "axle" is the entire differential assembly, axle shafts, housing, etc. The axle shafts are the skinny flanged parts that rotate the wheel. The housing is the case that houses both the axle shafts and differential. parts of the housing are the pumpkin or centersection and the axle tubes. The differential assembly is the ring and pinion(final drive gears, sometimes just called "gears"), spider gears and carrier inside the pumpkin part of the housing. So if you've replaced the stock BMW rearend with a Ford 8.8, then you can swap in any ford 8.8 carrier into it. If the rear end is still the stock BMW unit, then you can only use BMW parts inside.
@gnarledcaptaintheduck9207
@gnarledcaptaintheduck9207 3 жыл бұрын
@@NightWrencher thanks for the reply really helped me understand. I've seen some people talk about gears like 3.7 what's that about and do i need to be careful with those numbers and do those numbers have to match with my car's in some way?
@NightWrencher
@NightWrencher 3 жыл бұрын
@@gnarledcaptaintheduck9207 the numbers define the gearset inside the differential. Typically, changing it doesnt affect the rest of the car, unless its AWD or 4WD because the front and rear differentials have to match. The number is the number of teeth on the ring gear divided by the teeth on the pinion gear. So if your ring gear has 59 teeth and the pinion has 15 teeth then the ratio would be 3.93. So for every turn on the driveshaft the axle shafts spin 3.93 times. Slow cruiser and economy cars use lower number ratios to keep RPMs down for mpg at higher speeds at the cost of acceleration. Race cars and trucks normally want higher number gears to keep the engine in the powerband on the hwy or increase acceleration at the cost of MPGs and top speed.

do you know how bad gear oil is for the soil?
@NightWrencher
@NightWrencher 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, but this is a junkyard, the people there are supposed to drain out all the fluids before the vehicles hit the yard. There's no more "soil" its all dirt mixed with oil, pretty much unusable forever, BUT again, this is a junkyard, so I don't think they care. Do I feel bad about it? Absolutely. The yards need to provide trays under all the cars and properly drain the cars to prevent things like this but what can you do.
@erice5429
@erice5429 3 жыл бұрын
Very nice video, HOWEVER, you should have not let fall all of that oil in ground.
@NightWrencher
@NightWrencher 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with you 100% but the junkyards here in california are supposed to drain all the fluids before letting the cars out in the yard so there wasn't supposed to be any fluid in the truck to begin with. And they dont provide drain buckets or somewhere to dump the oil so theres really not much we can do
