In this episode, Aaron and his brothers start the rebuild process on the WRX 5MT they picked up. They tear it down and go over how specific components work while also discussing what parts need replacing and how to go about it!
This was the first time any of them had opened up a Subaru gearbox and they figure things out as they go without looking at any diagrams.

Since we shot this, I’ve picked up another trans with a blown 3rd gear that I can use for parts, and my uncle has a big shop press that I can use to pull gears and bearings off the shafts and reinstall everything! I don’t plan on using this transmission in the near future, so It’ll probably be until october or so before I actually get around to rebuilding it.
I hope you enjoyed this episode, I sure had a fun time tearing into it. Transmissions are about the only thing i haven’t dealt with. Its usually simpler to just find a replacement trans and swap it in. I’ve always been intimidated by transmissions just because they have so many moving parts and everyone says you need specialty tools to work on them. Its really liberating to finally get over that fear and realize its just another component!
There’s some really cool content coming your way in the next few weeks and months, so be sure to hit that subscribe button to show your support. You can see daily updates on instagram, Facebook, or twitter by following the links in the description.
There’s also a link to my online store where you can pick up dirtcheapdaily stickers and t-shirts!

I got subaru legacy 99 2.5 A/T I'm not sure what's wrong with it the I disconnected the rear axles and the front axles are jamed and no reverse nor drive, my question is would it be the transmission or the Center differential and I noticed the front tries or larger than the back tries

Hey I'm looking at buying this 95 Legacy Wagon with the 2.2L H4 is the second gear is out in the transmission as well. I've torn down an engine before but never a transmission is it relatively difficult to rebuild one? I'm not saying I'm the sharpest tool in the shed but I can figure things out pretty easily. Also it's a manual forgot to mention that

Where's part 2, man!?! My LGT transmission is starting to grind going into second gear. I'm trying to figure out what to do for a transmission. It's my DD; I've found plenty of low mileage JDM Legacy turbo transmissions and some WRX ones but I can't decide whether I want to buy one of those (since I'd have to swap my rear diff as well to match the final drive) or just rebuild my current one. Love your videos!

Press the gears and bearings off the shafts, press straight-gears on, install the forks and build it vise versa, with a proper function after all? :) Whats needed on tools to press the gears off and on?

3:25 - "This" is not sending power to the front diff. These gearshafts in the rear housing are the two output shafts to the rear, coming from the center diff. It's just not in a straight line, since the crankshaft is supposed to sit a little higher for ground clearance and stuff.. but you figured it instantly, sorry;)

How difficult is it to remove the transmission? Does the engine have to be removed too, or can it stay in the car?
@Dirtcheapdaily
@Dirtcheapdaily 7 жыл бұрын
+jds7777's creations its relatively simple to remove the transmission in a Subaru. You can leave the engine alone. There's 5 bolts that hold the transmission to the engine. One on each corner, and a 5th under the starter. Then it's just removing the axles, driveline, exhaust, and shift linkage. Check out my manual swap series for more specifics! The next episode will be out tomorrow 👍🏻

I have studied the FSM and teardown manual for this transmission very extensively for this transmission as I'm getting ready to document this exact tear down for my own video series, and I was literally yelling at the guy in the red, correcting him on what exactly it does. The gear set outputs to the center diff and those gears he was saying was the center diff are the transfer drive gears. They really should have the FSM while they're doing this. You can't guess when it comes to transmissions.

@@ninjafit3275 4th is known to go in the 04 to 06 at around 40 psi, 700 to 850 whp, 600 to 700 wtq and flat foot shifting. It was not the gears fault. But it will go if you build your car to race, and then race it. If you buy an access port for your sti and make 315 to 330 whp your trans is fine.
