The Book of Lab 0 seconds ago i love the way this guy explains the steps of the repair, he is very well spoken and is good at explaining his thought process as well as action process, one thing i didnt hear him add was about caliper removal, when removing calipers from rotors always take a small pry bar or large headed flat head screw driver to go thru the hole that is usually on the top side of most calipers and get in between the pad and the rotor and pry the pads apart a bit this will squeeze the piston of your caliper inward a bit and make it much easier to get calipers off and more importantly back on once you have let them hang and let the pads shift a bit, if you dont do this step the pads will slightly shift and the piston will slightly open after sitting for a period of time making it sometimes impossible to reinstall because of lack of clearance it is always best to take this step before trying to remove calipers as it is the easiest way to gain clearance, ive seen other techs in the shop use a C clamp to go over the caliper and depress the piston just a bit so that installation goes smoothly but ive found that this is a waste of time and effort when you can just pry the piston slightly open before even removing the caliper cuz even a mm of clearance will make it 1000x easier to remove and reinstall them, i hope this helps someone along their journey.

I used a long straight pry bar to take the old carrier bearing off. I used a lot of PB Blaster and loosened the bearing in a cross pattern and it worked, it took over half an hour, but the bearing is still good and no warps or damage.

I love this video thx much for the big help and as detailed as this vid it is and even did thing we shouldn't done but if not 100% sure of how u going to it dont do it or ur differential will not work right..... i defenily wouldn't recommend anyone this jobs and if u do it urself be very confident using the right tool and follow every steep even if take 4 days but do it right than not and pretty much will result on damage pinion ring gear or worse and trust me im a mechanic.. the right gear and pinion are not cheap..... with that small advice best of luck to all....

I had my front diff axle assembly replaced on my truck yesterday for one taken from another truck, and I’m trying to do a tear down of my original one so I can see why mine was so noisy. For the life of me I can’t get the diff to slide out of the housing like around the 12:50 mark. I’ve pried on it every way I could think of. Any tutorial you could point me to for this scenario? Can a slide hammer with the right attachment work if I take out the center pin?

I have an 05 1/2 ton f150 4x4 5.4L truck with some whining in the rear end differential. A mechanic gave me a price of $875 to put in new carrier bearing and races , pinion bearing and races and pinion seal. Does this sound like a decent deal or is it on the high side. He said it took him 3 hours to tear it all apart and put it on the bench and will be another 3 hours to put it all back together with new parts and charges $60 per hr. Thanks

You know you could have used that bearing separator after you cut the cages on the roller bearings, it would have saved you a lot of hassle with the cutting and the air hammer. I had the same thing happen to me on my Ford 8.8 axle and had to cut the cages but discovered the puller worked great for the rest I just had to use a garbage Chinese socket to use as a plug for the center.

Julio, the crush collar needs to be crushed with a strong pneumatic impact wrench, this process starts @ the 39 minute mark in the video, no real torque setting, he installed that tool to keep the yoke from spinning. When things started tightening up he would raise that tool, then let it drop. It should drop and stop, not swing back. And remember, go slow because if you crush the collar too much you have to get a new one.

Not a rebuild. You never touched the clutches, which I wanted to see done. All you did was replace the bearings, ring, crush collar, and pinion. And you left the pinion at the wrong depth. You should change the description to replacing ring and pinion, with bearings. I'd suggest redoing the job completely and reshooting the video.
