www.VideoJoeKnows.com How to remove a 5 gallon bucket lid is easy...when you know how. You know the kind
of lid where you have to scratch your head a bit to figure out how to remove the 5 gallon bucket lid...? Joe has 2
ways he removes these lids but if you don't have this special tool then there still is an easy way to remove these
5 gallon bucket lids that maybe you are not aware of. These 5 gallon bucket lids come on 5 gallon paint containers
as well as 5 gallon joint compound buckets that have this same lid. Now you will know how easy it is to remove
these 5 gallon bucket lids....if you watch this video!

Still too hard for me to open by hand, and I don't have one of those specialty tools... but an adjustable pipe wrench worked just like the opener! If I hadn't seen that tool, the pipe wrench wouldn't have come to my mind, so Thanks! I didn't have to fight with it, and didn't break a nail. 🌞

Wow nice job for not breaking a nail! I'm actually thinking whoever first opened this bucket lid maybe didn't look closely to see if there was an actual tab zip strip that could be cut at the very end then pulled off all the way around the bottom edge of the lid. Most 5 gallon buckets have this zip strip so you remove that first then from then on it makes it easier to re-install the lid as well as removing it. There's your tip for the day.....!

Thank you! I couldn't remember the part about tearing off the strip around the edge and needed to figure out why the pry bar wasn't enough to lift the lid. Watched this and 2 minutes later, bucket open.

On the 5 gal. Lowe's bucket with a lid, I could not find a place where I live that sold the plastic wrench. I used a regular hand can opener that has a bottle opener on the side of it. Just use the bottle opener part (has a sharp curve to it) and every 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch use the opener on the lid - all the way around - slightly lifting to loosen the lid. It opened easily and still had enough seal to use it - maybe not for liquids though. Worked for me.

I'm sure there's a better way than buying a special tool
@VideoJoeKnows
@VideoJoeKnows Жыл бұрын
Well yes there IS a better way. On most full 5 gallon buckets look closely at the bottom edge of the actual lid area & you will see a perforated zip strip. Find the end of it where you snip it then you pull that entire strip off the bottom edge of the lid. Now the lid will go on easier not to mention it will now be alot easier to remove the lid whenever needed.....see? Not sure what that tool is called but I really don't use that tool. It was there in the closet when I was helping a friend out so I thought I would make a video of it anyway but if you watch the video again, the first few minutes, I show a different & better way to remove new lids on 5 gallon buckets & it's way easier without needing to buy that tool then find the tool every time you need to open a bucket lid. Watch again & see. I have lots of DIY videos on my channel you would appreciate. Just go to my main KZfaq channel page then click on playlists then scroll down to see. @VideoJoeKnows

Ha! I've never heard of someone using a sawzall but hey if it works...keep doing it. You'd be surprised though how many 5 gallon buckets actually have the pull tab on there if you look real hard. Pull that tab zip strip then it will make your bucket lids come off & go on easier. Thanks for stopping by!

I'm trying to do the opposite. I want to put a food storage lid on a 5 gallon bucket. It is impossible! I found your video searching " how to put a lid on a 5 gallon bucket." I think I'll get one of those tools and try it. Thanks for making a video about such a simple idea. 131k views to date - not bad!!!
@VideoJoeKnows
@VideoJoeKnows Жыл бұрын
@@thebazile67 Thanks so much for your message. Not sure if you need one of those tools since your storage lid probably won't have such a high ridge around the lid. The reason why this lid was so hard to get off is because they didn't pull the zip strip off the bottom edge of the lid first. You can either leave that zip strip on or you can tack it off. If you take it off then it makes it easier to remove the lid & put it back on....see what I mean? Watch the video again & I also show how to pull that zip strip off. In your case though you can just buy a lid for a 5 gallon bucket & the new lids don't have that high ridge at the bottom edge of the lid so in your case you won't need that tool. You can buy those lids from The Home Depot or Lowes separately & you will see they go on & off very easily without having to use that tool. Just thought I would let you know. Thanks again for sending me your message & good luck using 5 gallon buckets for your food storage. I have lots more DIY videos on my channel to help you save money around the house on your howto projects & repairs. @@Three_Random_Words You know The Home Depot & Lowes sell plastic lids that fit their standard 5 gallon plastic paint buckets & all purpose joint compound buckets so I think they would work for your metal buckets as well.
