How To Remove and Install a Radio: 2000-2007 Toyota Highlander

In this video I show you how to remove the factory radio from my 2003 Toyota Highlander and install an aftermarket radio in it's place. I would imagine this would be the same process on any 2000-2007 Toyota Highlander.
Tools you will need:
- Plastic/Metal Panel Poppers (got mine from Harbor Freight Tools)
- Pic Tools (also purchased at Harbor Frieght Tools)
- Basic Socket/Screwdriver Set (mainly need a 10mm and philips head screwdriver)
- Wire Strippers
- Wire Crimpers
- Crimp Caps (or some way to connect the wires for your new radio harness)

Thanks, will help on my 03. Don't like those crimp caps, prefer Solder and Heat shrink with adhesive. To remove the crimp caps, you can also Squeeze them at a 90⁰ to how they were crimped, they slide right off, you don't lose length of the wire. You can strip new if Strands are screwed up or missing. I would use solder sleeves instead of crimp caps, they take up less room behind the dash plus some TESA tape to make cable look OEM. Nice install. 😄😄

Hey Guys. Somebody busted out my window on my 2006 Highlander. I had a kinda cheap shop put in a new window, but it does say Toyota on it. And my reception is terrible now. Question: Is the antenna in the actual window at all or is it just around it and not hooked up right? Thanks for any help

There are three plugs going into the back of the factory radio. The new wire harness allocates two plugs. What is the third (smaller wires...three 16awg wires) used for. I was hoping you would describe the wires as you unplugged them from back of the factory unit.

My 2001 Highlander radio after long time without use start to make a faulty high frequency ground noise about 10 khz in the left channel and a 50 hz wave signal very strong in the front right speaker, after some minutes on it turns less amount of noise and both noise only goes with the volume at minimun, as soon I turn up the volume a bit the 10 khz ground noise appear and the right channel bass hum, the bass hum tends to go after a while putting some loud music but the 10 khz ground noise never goes, has someone has this problem ?

I would use Metra to look up the specific harness needed for the JBL model you are working on

@@CuratorXAngelus I just bought an 07 Highlander and I've been tryna find videos of people that have systems in their Highlanders but there really aren't very many. I've found maybe 2 videos. I'm trying to find out whether 15s or 12s sound better in them, I'm personally a fan of 15s but never ran 15s in an suv only cars or trucks last suv I had I put 4 12s in it.

@@pyroman6695 I mean everyone is going to have their own preference. I personally love 12's, but I listen to mainly metal/hardcore/rock music. When I do listen to rap/hiphop/edm the 12's will still give you some low (pending the woofer, box, amp, settings, etc.) 15's are personally to "flubby" for what I would mainly listen to, but I do appreciate how much air they can move and how low they can get. Thats all personal preference. Maybe try and join a few Facebook groups specific to Car Audio or specific to Toyota Highlanders to see if anyone else has any personal input.

How do you know what wire goes where?

Your aftermarket radio should have a diagram showing what the wire colors mean. Your adapter harness should also have a diagram going over the colors. Place the 2 side by side and do some matching. For example, your Front Left speaker wires should be White (+) and White/Black (-). This can vary with each radio/harness/car, but usually it's pretty standard.

Ok that's assuming the radio puts out audio directly to the speakers, what about the JBL system, does it have a preamp / separate AMP or the like? In which case you couldn't just put the speaker out to a line-out. @@CuratorXAngelus

@@JacanaProductions I don't have the JBL so I can't know for sure honestly. But in my previous experience in car audio certain Nissans had BOSE radios. Those radios took a specific harness that had RCA adapter incorporated to plug into the back of aftermarket radio and integrate with the factory system properly. So I would imagine there is a special harness for the JBL Toyotas that would be similar.

@@JacanaProductions additionally I would recommemd contacting Metra Car Audio (used this company all the time when I worked in car audio) or Scosche. Just e-mail or call their customer service, give them your year/make/model/options, and they should be able to set you up with the correct harness/dash kit/parts needed for your specific install.

That aftermarket head unit came from another car. He used the factory wiring but had to 1st connect the JVC harness/wires to the aftermarket harness/kit.
