I have the same problem with a Porter-Cable circular saw my father used 50-60 years ago. No spindle lock and, like "1990 Railfan" posted 4 months ago, I also find that immobilizing the blade is not enough; the motor shaft still turns, making good TIGHTENING of the blade impossible. I came up with a fix that I didn't hesitated doing with this old circular saw. I noted in the fan exhaust port that the fan, which counter rotates vs. the blade, that a hole could be placed in the housing behind the fan plate. I tapped this hole with a 1/4 20 tap wrench and installed a Phillips head screw long enough to bear on the fan plate when "spindle locking" is needed to tighten or loosen the blade. Backed out and anchored with a nut, the screw doesn't interfere with operation of the saw. This fix works GREAT! The only field tool, besides the wrench is a Phillips head screwdriver. If I could, I'd post pictures.

Have a SkillSaw 5150, same problem, motor turns with the blade held, was able to get a scratch awl into the fan blades to hold motor still,

This definitely worked for me. I have an old Black & Decker saw that my father gave me that could be 30 years old. I find it crazy that saws weren't built with that safety feature back then. Like I really can't imagine doing that all the time to change a blade. But this video helped a bunch. THANKS!!

Thank you so much. I was and am a daddy’s girl. My dad taught me how to use some tools, but mostly he did it all for me. When he died suddenly (and he was young) last year, I’ve had SUCH a hard time trying to do all this without him. It’s been very hard on me and I miss him so much. Thank you so much! I have my dad’s very old B&D circular saw. The blade has probably been on there for over 30 years and I’ve decided I need to learn how to fix some things. No spindle lock, so this video was perfect! A couple of tugs & it was off!

My circular saw is a 1961 craftsman, and it don't have a spindle lock either and I was thinking of doing your method, but I decided to use my Makita Cordless Impact Wrench and it removed the bolt without holding the blade and without any effort. thanks

I was in the same boat, Kent: my old Skilsaw (circa 1970's, passed down from my late father) has NO spindle lock on it that I can see. Never watched dad change the blade, and he's gone now, so I was in the dark as to how to do it. Found my way here, bingo-bango, problem solved! I LOVE that saw, too... I hope to get decades more use out of it.

I have an old Craftsman saw from about1996. It doesn't have a spindle lock. I'm able to lock the blade with vice grips , however, as I turn the locking nut (bolt) the entire motor shaft spins as well, so I am not able to loosen the blade nut.

Sounds like the bolt is seized in the motor shaft, try an overnight soak with a good penetrating spray/oil, then I would use an impact driver to get it off, if it still spins, try wedging something between the blade & washer (preferably wood or aluminum shim) along with vise grips on the edge of the blade as shown in the video. Really check the bolt & shaft threads after you get it out. Also, sometimes it helps to tighten the bolt before trying to remove to break the set of the threads.

The easiest way to remove the blade without a spindle lock is , first step push the guard like he did forward, second grab a scrap piece of wood lay it flat on the floor and rest the blade against the scrap of wood but don’t push to hard all your preventing is the blade from spinning, and then use the tool to remove the nut. The blade teeth will grab the scrap wood and prevent the blade from spinning. Pretty easy . You can skip the vice grips, the screw driver etc.. Like he said we can share ideas and this has helped me and it prevents damaging the blade, the circular sled .

I didn't have a screwdriver so i used a allen wrench......worked great. thanks for the video. Oh good camera work on the zooming in. I was cutting some wood at night with no light and went through some nails. Sacramento calif. Well Folsom.

I have an old Milwaukee 6365 circular saw. Even holding the blade from spinning it will not tighten because the blade does not keep the spindle from spinning. it is a round spindle with grooves in it (may have been replaced when it was damaged years ago, not sure too long ago) so I don't really understand how the spindle is to be held by the blade which has a round 5/8 hole fitted over the spindle. There is no positive stop between the two. So when I hold the blade and turn with wrench, the nut just keeps spinning with the arbor within the blade hole. I finally figured to use channel locks on the outer washer which does have notches that fit into the grooves of the arbor thus keeping it from spinning. I used this saw for years but it fell off a roof once and maybe it got serviced with the wrong parts. But even with that Makita you use for your example, the arbor has two flat sections but the blade doesn't so not sure how the blade holds it from spinning.

I have an old Craftsman with no spindle lock. The old blade came off fine but the new blade won't tighten. I can keep the new blade from moving by using vicegrips and/or a screwdriver, but the spindle just keep turning with the bolt as I tighten. Any ideas??

I pushed down really hard on it to lock it in place and held it against a board where it caught so that it wouldn't spin worked well assuming it doesn't come flying off and kill me

Very informative and well explained. I inherited a pair of sheetmetal vice grip pliers. Excellent blade gripping and they don't come in contact with the blade teeth. It's the only thing I use them for. :-)

This works great when you need to just immobilize the blade. What can you do if your circular saw does not have a spindle lock AND the bolt is jammed on the motor axel; i.e. the blade is immobilized, you turn the bolt with your wrench, BUT the motor turns with you and you can not loosen the blade from the motor axel?

@@woodstover It's 'kinda' on my wish list, but after a shitty experience w/ a Makita drill (had it for 10 years, battery went and replacement went into the hundreds of dollars) I'm strictly corded. 2ndly, I have a hammer drill, a corded one, and yeah ONE battery powered one that's my go to. I really haven't seen a need for me for an impact. I'm a talented amateur; if I could see a need my current set of toys can't deal with, I'd get one; but haven't had that happen.

I've got a Ryobi saw that was purchased from one of those discount dealers that sells refurbished saws and apparently the first buyer turned the blade bolt the wrong way and broke the catch. So Now the bolt won't loosen no blade so what should I do?

My Skil saw doesn't have a spindle lock. The instructions say to position the teeth into a piece of scrap wood. That works good.

If the blade you are using has slots cut into it, you can just slip an allen key into the slot and that will immobolise the blade against the shoe of the saw.

Same problem, I figured out how to stick a screwdriver deep into the motor area through the bottom of the saw and block it from turning. I had to hold pressure on the screwdriver while turning the bolt wrench

I don't know about yous. But I'm with the thinking that this is self explanatory but I guess this video needed to be made for a certain group of people. The group like my brother who comes over to my house and ask for a socket so he can put his blade on when there's already an on board wrench to do so.

Never over tighten your Skil Saw blade. You want it to slip if it hit's something hard so it doesn't bounce back on you

Always make sure your blade is nice and tight otherwise it could become loose and create blade woble or worse come off

I purchased a brand new Diablo 71/4 24 tooth blade. First we know that the threads are reverse threaded and that the teeth have to point in the direction the motor turns. I went to put it on and thought my old age was catching up with me. Am I just stupid, I thought. Why is the printing on the back side of the blade? Maybe it's just Diablo that is stupid. I watched about three KZfaqs on changing a circular saw blade. They all showed the blade just like on here, printing on the correct side. I had my wife come in and watch it with me, She came to the same conclusion, the printing is on the wrong side of the blade. I did an internet search " why is my Diablo blade's printing on the wrong side of the blade" No results for that search. I looked at KZfaq again and found one that showed the man putting it on with the printing on the reverse side. He said that it's a common mistake that people assume the printing would be on the side that you would see when installed. So, W.T.F.?

Have that with a Stanley blade too !! It took a couple of days and the light to reflect at exactly the right angle on the no printed side of the blade, for me to see that rotation direction plus some other details were etched into the surface ...
