Removed the starter from my toyota to clean the solenoid contacts. Eventually I had to replace the contacts and plunger...so I recommend to get some new ones from ebay (like $12 bucks) before you start. This way you don't have to do it twice like me...argh!
Starter runs like new now! Not even one clicking anymore!
Here are 2 photo links that might give you an idea of the location of the upper bolt:

I just did this job this afternoon on my 99 Corolla. Your video helped me quite a bit so thanks for posting this. I don't think I would have ever found that top bolt if it weren't for this video. I too had to remove the oil filter (don't forget to put it back in before you test!). You definately want to use the smallest wrench you can to get that lower bolt off. Nice work and again thanks for posting!

I bought a new one. I did take the solenoid apart though, and I could see that the contacts were very rough looking. I know it could have been repaired but for 100 bucks I just put the new one in. I also replaced the radiator a couple weeks earlier due to a broken seal. I'm gonna make this corolla go forever. :)

The top bolt is a pain to remove because the first 1/4" of threads going into the starter flange were cross threaded when my car was put together at the factory.For easy access to the top bolt, remove the air intake and battery. Fit a long ratchet extention with a 14mm socket to reach the top bolt head located under the throttle body.Remove the lower 14mm bolt located under the oil filter...that should be easy!After the starter is removed, check the upper mounting bolt threads on the starter flange for damage. Bench test your starter after you replaced the contacts and plunger.Also, don't be tempted to remove the plastic cover under the car because the bolt heads will break while you try to remove them.This is due to rust.Hopefully, your starter will last you another 100k miles after this repair.

Hey Frank, there are only 2 bolts (14mm) holding the starter in place. You can't see the upper one that easy...best to use a flashlight and take a long extension with a 14mm nut just like I do in the video. Start with inserting the wrench next to the battery tray towards the engine...I know it is hard to see, but it is there.

Another thanks here! Helpful tips about the oil filter and pulling the battery. Here are a few things I can add: Use some electric motor cleaner on the inside of the starter. Pull the oil sensor plug. It helps on reassembly. Put the wires back on the starter before bolting it in. Starts perfect now and it my code caused by overfilling the gas tank even cleared. Car must be happy.

Today I finally got my repair kit from ebay (only $13 shipped)...2 contacts and new plunger. When I installed the contacts I was a little worried because they looked like a little bit cheap quality...not like the original ones. Anyways...put everything together, went to autozone and got the starter tested before I waste my time installing it. ALL TESTS PASSED!!! Yeah!....

Yes, You can do it without removing oil filter. 6 x 10mm + 2 x 14mm. one 14mm from bottom, one 14mm from right side top side under air intake box. If your car needs an oil change do it at the same time leaving oil filter out during removal and instillation of starter. But it is NOT required, with a little wiggling you can do it =) IF your repair kit is on it's way but your starter isn't working and you wanna DRIVE ASAP, just pull the starter and clean contacts plus bottom side of solenoid.

Actually, I took out the battery (and tray) first like you have suggested, then the starter top bolt. I then took out the oil filter to make room. Jack up the car to get the second bolt, then wiggle the starter out easily.

My car is a 99 Toyota corolla. It take about 10 to 20 tries( turning the key and getting the one click every time as the video) it's getting worst but what I've notice is that when I've been driving for like half an hour and I when I come back 30 minutes after it start perfectly because it's still hot but the next day when I'm trying to star the car again same old process the clicking noise.

I can't believe I got the Son Bitch out without blowing off a bolt head!!The extender ratchet did the trick but I had to keep turning the bolt with on open wrench coz it would not hand loosen. I guess it was kicking and screaming all the way to the end. The plunger sides where the cooper connections are as well as the cooper contacts inside look really beat up. I could clean it up just to be down there again in a few weeks. I think I'm gonna go Frankman's route and order up at E-Bay.Thanks Ya'll

Just fixed mine. Replaced contacts and plunger with a $12 part on Amazon. Had to buy a socket extension. I have a 1996 Corolla. Starter is on the back of the engine. Had to remove the air filter compartment instead of the battery. But basically the same process as the video.

How was the installation? Did you do it with oil filter in place as well? Notes: the recessed nuts on the contact bolts may need to be removed with grounded down to 15.5 mm OD 14 mm scoket head. I use 13 mm huts during installation. Cleaning the solenoid contacts may be temporary solution. I am getting new contacts at pick your part by stripping recently rebuild or new starters. It is a good idea to cover one terminal on the battery before removal to prevent accidental shorts. Best!

Great tutorial! I got everything loose and off except the bottom bolt. I think my ratchet is to short(can get little or no torque on it and it slips) and my extender a bit too long(comes in at a funky angle). I'm afraid of stripping or breaking the bolt head. Then it's game over. Any other suggestions? Thanks!

Yes. You have to remove the plastic cover on the passenger side (just take off 6 screws) and the oil filter to make room for the starter to pull it out.

Hey Frank nice videos! I've subbed. I have a question for you. I have a 2001 Toyota Corolla CE that is having a click issue. It's not the starter but the solenoid contacts and plunger I believe. My question is sir, do you happen to know the part numbers for the plunger and solenoid contacts used, or the starter repair kit you used?

Hey there, I don't have a parts number, just look on ebay for 'Solenoid Repair Kit' and make sure it's for a 1998-2002 corolla. That's where I got mine from.

thiink i used a 3/8" drive ratchet with 12 mm on both bottom bolts(10" extention on the electrical bolt, and maybe a 3" ext. on the other bolt). Make sure u u have a big enough wrench for leverage!

Oil filter was removed during removal and installation. I will put new contacts in since I still have problems...I got a kit from ebay. Sometimes the starter does not disengage and spins without key in the lock. Guess the contacts welded together and make constant contact...that's why I will put new parts in. Hope this will fix it then. And yes people...be careful with the battery terminals...

@TheFrankman711
@TheFrankman711 5 жыл бұрын
Hi eles, you need to take the battery out first and use a flashlight to locate the upper bolt, it's pretty hidden and you will need a long extension to get to it. And yes, you have to get under the car to remove the lower bolt. You also have to remove the oil filter, otherwise it will be almost impossible to get the starter out.

Make sure you have some good quality tools and the correct size (14mm for the starter bolts). I think for the bottom bolt I didn't use an extender...or at least it was very short...it's already a year ago when I did it...good luck!

Ideally you should do this from the bottom bolt FIRST..... THEN remove the 2 solenoid contacts (not shown at removal)... one is a snap/clip connection and the other is a 13mm nut with washer- negative ground....IMO your vid is slightly misleading on that aspect, You cant just pull out Starter without showing those crucial connections.
