This is a good feature that Toyota has added to the drums. I've known about this feature ever since I bought my 1996 tacoma back in 1996.

I just removed both my rear brake drums for the first time ever! My secret. I used my $200 rubber sledge hammer from "Mac's Hardware." It is a 12 lb. Deadblow hammer that is 36" long. The drum had rust welded itself to the shaft that centers your wheel on the hub. 5 good whacks all over and it came right off!

Don't forget the pitch designation for those bolts to remove the drum. They are M8x1.25 bolts. Readily available at Lowes or Home Depot. Never liked drum brakes myself. Never seem to wear equally. Those were probably original from factory but yet wore so differently which makes you wonder. Getting everything concentric seems to be very difficult. Great video TM. Thanks.

I can't complain too much about rear drum brakes on a lightweight car like this. I still have the original brake shoes on my 05 Vibe and they have lots of life left. Amazingly, my Canadian car has far less rust than this California Corolla but that would be down to preventative maintenance including Krown Rustproofing.

Did my 2013 Corolla rear brakes yesterday for the first time (205k miles). This method worked great. Could have used those threaded holes on the wheel too though.

Any suggestions when the holes are rusted and i cannot start the bolts by hand? (Not a fan of sledge hammer, but it may be better that $120/hr for shop labour for brake job)
@tiredmule7624 Жыл бұрын
You could try chasing the threads with an M8 1.25 bottom tap

I think they are M8 X 1.25 bolts

If you find a solution I'd love to know, since my M8x1.25 bolts do not fit into my 2006 Matrix holes. The holes are rusted, because I can't get the bolts started by hand. I'm asking around to borrow a brake puller, otherwise, my next step is to jeopardize the wheel bearings and smashing the #$%& out of the drums with a sledge hammer. :(

@@ecpoirier we used a blow torch to heat up the drum, and then occasionally hit with hammer. After a little bit it came loose. There are a few videos on KZfaq that do it. Care is needed though

@@shemmac4700 4 hours today. PB Blaster, screw drivers to add tension to the drum, hammers, propane torch. Result = FAIL. I'm at a loss. I'd just love to know the condition of the brake shoes/pads. I've done the front, now it's time for the back.
