VIEW a step by step guide to replace your pump motor:
www.inyopools.com/HowToPage/ho...
Today's pool pump motors are much more efficient and cheaper to run. If you have an older pool pump or it's motor is running loud or just stop working, you may may want to consider replacing your pool pump motor. You do not have to replace the whole pool pump and as this guide will show, replacing your pool pump motor is not that difficult. Although this guide is specific to a Hayward pool pump, most of the steps can apply to other models of pool pumps. Caution: You must ensure that the electrical supply agrees with the motor's voltage, phase, and cycle and that all electrical wiring conforms to local codes and NEC regulations. If your are unsure of this voltage or are unfamiliar with electrical codes and regulations, have a professional electrician wire your pump for you or at least check your work. Failure to wire the pump correctly can cause electrical shock or can damage your pool pump motor and void your warranty.
To find the proper pool pump motor you will need to know the manufacturer of your pump (popular names include Hayward, Sta Rite, Pentair, Pac-Fab, Jacuzzi, etc.) and the model of your pump (i.e. Max Flow, Super Pump, Super II, Dura-Glas, Max-E-Glas, WhisperFlo, Magnum, etc.) This information should be located on the pump housing near the basket of your pump. The pump represented in this guide is a Hayward Super Pump
lso look for the following information on the label on the motor: Model #, HP, SF, RPM, FR, Volts and Amps. Please feel free to call INYOpools.com toll free at 1-877-372-6038 and one our friendly staff can help you determine the proper motor for your pool pump.
We highly recommend replacing the shaft seal when replacing your motor. If you use your old shaft seal it may not mate up properly with the new pump and typically will leak. A new shaft seal generally costs between $15 - $20, or for a better value at approximately $35, go with a Go-Kit which includes the shaft seal and all O-rings, gaskets and lubricant for your pump. To purchase a GO KIT, click GO-KITS For further step-by-step instructions on replacing a motor shaft seal, click How To Replace A Motor Shaft Seal.

Thanks guys! This video is fantastic! I wrote a short version of the steps on paper and used it to remove and replace the 2 HP motor. If you are hesitating or unsure of being able to do this, review the video 2 - 3 times and get comfortable with the steps. You will save money. I estimated 2 hours and it was just under that. Removing the old motor was fast and disassembling (less than 25 minutes). However, I ran into the wire stripping rework and paced myself to ensure my son and I got it right. I suggest stripping the electrical wires to expose new copper. It made it a lot easier to tighten and secure screws. Many thanks for the video!!!!

A lot of questions about capacitors: Shorting out the capacitor is done by placing a load across the terminals/wires of the capacitor. Usually this is done using a screwdriver for an instant discharge. However, for any large capacitor that has a DC voltage applied, the charge could be quite big and it will blow a large chunk of molten metal out of your screwdriver. It can be dangerous. Luckily these motors are AC. AC motors usually have at least a starting capacitor, but may have a run capacitor as well. There shouldn't be any charge on an AC motor capacitor because it flips polarity every cycle, so you shouldn't get any sparking or it will be very minimal. The capacitor is there to reduce the inductive reactance of the motor windings while the AC motor is starting or running. This allows the voltage and current to be closer to being in phase with each other so that all magnetic fields are properly aligned and there are no dead spots in the motor. This reduces the current requirement of the motor and makes it run much smoother and cooler.

I'm in the process of replacing an old and rusty Century pool pump motor which I inherited with the house I purchased recently. Upon disassembling the pump housing which is a Sta Rite unit, I noticed that the impeller did not have a plastic ring around it as shown in your video. Is this normal, as I ordered a bunch of replacement parts on Amazon for my rebuild, but cannot find a ring for the Pentair C105-236P type impeller.

Just watched your video.. This is exactly what I am trying to do. >Thanks for the detailed instructions. Only one thing which I could not follow. I am replacing shaft seal 37400-0027. I wanted to know the orientation of the second part of the shaft seal. Does the metal side of the second part face the white ceramic seal or does the rubber side face the white ceramic seal while loading it on the impeller. Please respond. Thanks.
@Inyopools
@Inyopools 7 жыл бұрын
For most pumps, the white ceramic piece is on the side closest to the motor and the spring loaded side is setting on the impeller. The orientation of the shaft seal is dependant upon your pump model. For example, the Hayward Super Pump shaft seal is installed the way I mention above, but the Pentair WhisperFlo is the opposite. What is the model number of your pump?

A good thing to add as a final check before replacing the lid at the back of the motor is to be sure that no wires (motor capacitor wire most likely) are anywhere near the motor shaft. I had a motor capacitor wire that slipped out from under the capacitor when replacing it and rubbed against the motor shaft until it shorted out. I've never had that happen before but it's easy to watch out for.

I am trying to figure out what motor to order. I think I have a one speed ONE HORSE POWER HAYWARD. Its about 9 years old and the outer markings are worn out. I found on ebay replacements. @Inyopools

Impeller lock screws used to be the norm, but most new pump designs have eliminated them in favor of the threaded impeller. They can still be found on pump designs like the Pentair Challenger and WhisperFlo, but they aren't "vital" to securing the impeller. They are more of a redundancy nowadays.

@Inyopools
@Inyopools 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tom, attaching the bonding wire is an extremely important step to provide protection from electrical shock in the event of electrical insulation failure. It is usually required by your local electrical code for all metal objects around your pool to be bonded. If you are having trouble finding the bonding lug on your new motor we would suggest having a licensed electrician help you out.

You'd want to use a silicone or teflon lubricant on the o-rings & gaskets. Magic Lube makes a good product. You don't need to lubricate the shaft seal. You can wet the rubber part with some water to help it slide into place.

You know, putting those bonding wires under the lug like that is a code violation. In an instance where you have two separate wires you need to attach them to one another using a split bolt connector and THEN put on of the leads into that bonding lug. A contiguous wire is also ok if you use an open style lug but what you did here is a big no-no and as an inspector I would fail that pool.

+Robert Fugate Do not forget snakes. I have heard stories of snakes wrapping up in motors only to be surprised when the next pump cycle comes around. That cannot be a fun clean-up.

Wrap the motor vents with plastic gutter leaf screen and use wire ties to hold in place.

If you have to ask about shorting a capacitor, then you should at the very minimum have someone there with electrical training so you don't hurt yourself.

get a new gasket, yours is damaged from chlorine. never place tablets in the skimmer basket and tie the floater off- and only use as many tabs in the feeder that is consumes in a week.- make sure your chemicals are balanced ! prime that pump and watch for the wet spot ! While a very helpful video still, a few scenes, especially starting at 2:17 are almost completely out of frame.

Hold a screwdriver by the insulated handle, and touch the metal blade to both terminals of the cap at the same time.

This is a pretty bad video. Half the time, what you're doing is out of frame. And you should show how to short out the capacitor.
