How to Replace a Radiator Hose (Upper and Lower)

Learn how to diagnose a bad radiator hose visually, and by feel. Also learn how to replace the upper and lower radiator hoses. Most radiator hoses will last over 200k miles (this one was 280k) and over 15yrs. Replacing the radiator hoses is easy for both the upper and lower radiator hoses in most cars yet they charge a lot to do the job, so do it yourself and save a ton of money!

Just a little tip, when changing the lower hose instead of pulling the hose off and getting covered in coolant, drill a hole in the hose first to let it drain.

Did what you said and drilled a hole in the new hoses. They weren’t any easier to get on and now they’re leaking coolant.

ChrisFix or rather than do that, there's an even simpler way to go. Just loosen the drain plug and let the coolant drain that way, much easier with no mess.

+ChrisFix Ugh, one of my hoses fell off and I have no idea how to fix the stupid thing, its like plugging in two female connectors. Its a 99 VW Golf and its a small hose, and people can't seem to get the damn thing right or give me the right part. Its the upper hose, but the hoses don't fit.

I just hit a dog 😣 didn't mean to, it ran in the road while I was going about 35-40 mph (didn't kill the poor fella hopefully, it staggered off limping & crying😢) when I pulled over, all my radiator fluid was all over floor because I had a rip in my bottom hose from impact. I'm soo furious 😠 cause now I have to fix this and my reservoir tank because it's leaking too 😭 any suggestions on where I can order cheap auto parts online? BTW, I have a 2002 Chevy Malibu

ChrisFix hey man my radiator hose was the tiny one it was smoking because it was old and had a hole in it, so I got a new one and put water in my tank when I put the new one on I drove too my buddy's house and saw the hood was still white smoke from it. my buddy told me it's smoking still because the old hose had all that stuff in it so I just need too drive it off.

Some of these lubes to help put on hose can be detrimental suggest you use k/y jelly on hose end and on nipple. It’s water soluble and makes replacement a breeze. No bad effects

I have a question.see if you can help me out.i have a 98 Honda civic lx that I took the shop for 2nd opinion.firest tone told me my tie rods are blown.which when I took it to the 2nd shop they said that the tie rods were fine.that my only problem was the radiator had a leak on the top and the lower transmission cooler line.would you suggest I replace the radiator all at once?i fear that I will burn out the transmission.any input on this question will be greatly appreciated.

Sounds they used a stop leak type product and it closed off too many portions of your radiator. It worked...just too well. I would go back and ask for an explanation.

Thank you. I love your videos.on my 98 Toyota corolla AE112R, I replaced both my radiator hoses, did a super flush, and changed my Thermostat all thanks to your videos. Following day I did my spark plugs and air filter. Next weekend I'm doing oil/filter and rocker cover gasket, and fuel filter. Saved myself hundreds of dollars and got a wonderful feeling of accomplishment. Especially being female I usually get ripped off by mechanics. Many thanks from a very grateful girl in Australia. 😆🔧

Brother you ain't joking about prying those hose lips. After I got the the factory spring clamps off, it was a beotch getting the freaking hoses off! I ended up getting channel locks to grip the hose and twist. The hoses came off a 1996 Ford Thunderbird LX, and I would imagine this was the first time they had been changed. Anyways, thank you for the video Chris. Beer is on me if you are ever in my neck of the woods! Cheers🍻

Hi , I might be too late but make sure to never use worm drive hose clamps on any coolant hose application. Even though they’re a pain in the butt sometimes , make sure to ONLY use “spring” clamps. The worm drive clamps tear up hoses , greatly shortening the life of your hoses , but also they don’t loosen and tighten as the temp fluctuates. Again , ONLY use spring clamps with coolant hoses 👍🏼🙄

This video’s 9 years old and is still exactly what I need for my burst upper radiator hose on my 2009 Kia Spectra, I guess the manufacturers said “don’t fix what ain’t broke” (except mine is broken) 🤣 thanks for putting this together! (Now I also know to be prepared for extra coolant still sitting in the hose itself, definitely gonna grab that bucket) UPDATE: had to cut my radiator hose replacement down to size, but it went smoothly and the hose is replaced. Still gotta get coolant and “burp” that system but otherwise I’m good.

You Sir have done the best radiator hose replacement on KZfaq. I worked on mine today the problem was pushing the new hose back on the spigot. So, adding WD40 does the trick. Happy Holidays

Do not use wd40. Use radiator hose grease or silicone paste. Keep in mind if you apply grease on the radiator intake, the upper radiator hose may slide out more easily with the engine front to back movement. I only apply radiator grease on hard to reach areas. On 7:04 you can use fine wet sandpaper. If you are re-using the hose, always put the clamp on the same position on the hose or replace it with a new clamp. I always replace the clamp when putting on a new hose.

I help friends and family out free of charge. Just buy the parts and I install. I have been told by them all that I do better work than the “trained” overpriced mechanics

dsgb1981 kinda? $30 dollars of hoses, about $30 to $60 and maybe an hour or two. At most $150 including labor. I'd tell them to go screw themselves.

I worked for Pep Boys for a couple of years. I would even then advise people to look elsewhere for repairs. Our labor prices were dictated by corporate, who paid us minimum wage to work on cars while they reaped the profits. (Oh, but if you upsold something that the customer didn't explicitly ask for originally, you got to keep 10% of that job! You could tell who the crooked mechanics were because they were the only ones making a living wage.) I got chewed out for installing a battery for someone for free (we were supposed to charge $70 labor for the job) and walked off. I've never looked back. If you're not buying tires and an alignment package (which is their loss leader, they pretty much price tires at cost) go anywhere but Pep Boys. Even dealerships are cheaper.

i wouldn't use WD40 to get the hose on cz its petroleum based it'll make the hose crack much faster. I'm really not trying to be a smart ass its just something i learned somewhere

The best is a little dish detergent like Palmolive or Dawn. It makes the hose slippery, but won't deteriorate it, and the best part is the ease of washing it off your hands.

Thank you so much for your video's. You have a demeanor about you that is very viewer friendly, helps even the less experienced feel comfortable and understand. No language barrier :) I stumbled across this looking to learn about tips, part names, steps on replacing my thermostat on my 1999 Toyota Tacoma. This helped me understand more what I was reading in the manual. Looking for a video on an actual thermostat replacement (if there is one) :)

I've read that petroleum products such as WD-40 deteriorate hoses over time. I've been told a silicone lubricant is a better choice. What are your thoughts on this?

hnkfsh81 It is true that wd40 will deteriorate a hose over time, but spraying a little on the end so it slides in will not cause any problems. After the car runs any wd40 will evaporate or be washed away from the coolant system. It is best practice to use silicone on petroleum based products but most people do not have silicone grease and do have wd40, so since it isnt a big deal in a situation like this, I used it. My hoses are still in great shape and have not "deteriorated" at all. Coolant hoses are pretty strong because they are constantly hot and have chemicals such as antifreeze in them.

When you pour your antifreeze...your pour with the bottle sideways...not straight up like that. It allows for a smoother flow from the jug.

I love working on my car. This really helped me with the lower radiator hose for my 2006 Buick Lucerne. I recently changed my upper hose after it cracked on me 20 miles from home. I noticed small dribbles not too long after I changed my upper near my lower (but I wasnt sure if thats where the lower was at) but they disappeared. Definitely changing that and the radiator cap this weekend. I noticed also that my new upper hose has signs of leaking where it connects to the engine. I think I might not have tightened it enough since it's the screw clamp and not the regular clamp.

timothy scott silly comment... I’m sure there are things you use daily that you don’t have a clue about. Computer... can you change internal ram, hard drives, mother board etc etc. your taps in your house... can you change washers, seals if it leaks etc etc. my point is if your theory was applied to everything then most people shouldn’t use or own anything including yourself, but hey maybe your an expert on everything.

Excellent video! Very similar project I need to do on my dodge caravan 2007 3.3. Got all tubes and coolant . Except metal lower engine outlet tube. Not sure if that needs replaced, yet. I'll do exact as you did in video and inspect metal O-Ring area of outlet And excellent tip on "Drill Hole" in lower tube to drain out remaining coolant as not to get soaked with coolant. Because it will be replaced anyhow. Brilliant!!!

My car is a 1990 Oldsmobile with only 62k miles on it, I am the 2nd owner since 48k miles. I’ve already replaced water pump. And that stopped me from having to put coolant once a week. But now I am still having a small driveway leak under the radiator. I have now found that is a hose. This was the exact video I was looking for since I self diagnosed that it was the hose.

I have to change out the upper radiator hose on my 2007 Sonata today. I knew you had a video covering this...thanks! and thanks for demonstrating how to "burp" the coolant system afterwards. My other car is a 2011 Mini S Clubman, and it has a bleed screw for this....easy, but if this step is skipped, or not done properly, the car will overheat.

Dude! You have made my day! I just replaced two radiator hoses and did a test drive and the engine was heating up. It was until I saw your video that I got all the air out and BOOOOOOM, no, the engine did not blow up, it ran like a bad ass! Thank you! B)
