How to replace damaged bottle cage mounts on a bike frame

Some tips on removing stripped, broken or loose water bottle mounts (rivnuts) and reinstalling on a bicycle frame. This video is an overview of the process I used to replace 2 damaged water bottle cage mount fittings that had a bolt that was stripped and broken off and another that the threaded portion of the rivnut broke inside the frame.
I basically used a Dremel tool with a cut off wheel and a Marson rivnut thread setter tool to repair and replace the damaged rivnuts.

Outstanding. I have a used bike and just noticed one of the bike holders has no threading. Didn't realise how easy it would be to just shoot in a new rivnut, I had wrongly assumed it was part of the frame at manufacture.

Hi Joey, thanks for the video. Very well done and very informative. What you're describing is exactly the situation I encountered while removing the DI2 battery cradle of my Cervelo P3. Do you recommend (or not) stainless steel rivets? I'm pretty sure with your video and my ...ahem..skill level I can replace the eyelets, but I wouldn't like to go this experience again and also the frameset is getting a very expensive painting, so ideally I would like to have something that lasted for the life of the frame. Thanks again

Dis you have a homemade version of the tool used to fix them in the frame? if so can you do a simple drawing with the dimensions on it?

No, but the homemade tool is just a M5 x0.8 metric bolt that's 1 1/2" long or so. You'll need a nut of the same size threaded on, and some spacers that the nut can turn against without allowing the rivnut to turn in the frame. Some guys like to use hub with a standard quick release skewer. Just remove the skewer end nut and spring, thread it in with the skewer lever in the open position, then use the cam action of the QR lever to set the rivnut. I've had carried results with the QR skewer/hub method as sometimes it's hard to get enough force out of the short QR lever to get the rivnut to flare out properly.

I had to cut and drill out a stripped rivnut that had been used for the bottle cage. Now I have the sawn piece of rivnut rattling around inside the frame. Any advice on how I could either get that out of there or at least stop it rattling? Was even considering pouring in something that might set solid, but that seems a bit extreme. Any better solutions?

Remove the bottom bracket? Usually there is a hole at the bottom of the downtube where it meets the bb.

Next time I do one of these repairs, I'll make a specific video on removing the old rivnut from inside the frame. Basically the process to remove the rivnut(s) is to remove the seat post and turn the bike upside down if the rivnut is in the seat tube or remove the fork from the frame and point the bike front end down. There will typically be a hole in the head tube where the down tube joins up. The rivnut will fall out of the hole.

But isn't the old rivnut now in the frame of the bike? Meaning a lot of rattling when riding?

Oh I get it... It'll come out the tube at the heatset, once the forks are off.

You can put masking tape on the paint around the rivnut to help from damaging the paint.

can i do this with a carbon frame? except the drilling part because my rivnut pop off on my frame because the screws are stuck and i want to replace it with a new rivnut by just using a tool if its ok?

This repair is on a carbon frame, but the process is the same regardless of frame material.

Don’t do this unless you’re sure you can get it out of the frame.... the holes in my steerer tube were too small.

If your frame is made of metal, the holes are there just for venting to let gas escape during the welding process. Unless your down tube OD is less than 1", you can safely enlarge the hole with a small file enough to get the broken debris out. There should be a hole in the BB shell as well that may be more accessible.

Joey Mesa Will enlarging the head tube hole not affect the strength of an aluminum frame? I’d have to enlarge it by at least a millimeter. The down tube is much larger than an inch.

The vent holes vary quite a bit depending on the manufacturer. Enlarging the hole by a millimeter or two will have no effect on the integrity of the frame. Just try to keep the hole as round as possible. A small round jewelers file works pretty well

@@JoeyMesa I managed to grind the rivnut down through the hole in the downtube using string and a Dremel until it was small enough to pull it out of the hole in the head tube. Only took 10 or 11 hours. Haha.

I saw this comment way too late. I have MTB with carbon frame and expected to get it out but it's somehow stuck just inside the mounting area. No matter how I shake my bike upside down, the rivnut wont go near steering tube hole or saddle post hole. :((((
