Normally there should be some slight play in the bearings but not a lot where you can almost remove them from the rotor itself.

Just what I needed. 2001 Lincoln Navigator has the same set up. I replaced the front rotors, pads and inner and outer wheel bearings. New rotors have both the inner and outer race already installed. Just have to grease and go. Thanks for posting this. Your vids are VERY helpful to the do it yourself guy like me.

It could be a switch issue, if there's a worn component in it. You may also want the make sure that all of the cables are good and that the battery terminals are clean.

I ordered Timken bearings (SET2 and SET5) for my 96 B3000 RWD. Also ordered a new Timken seal. I bought new Bendix rotors too, the rotor/hub assemblies are so cheap I wouldn’t reuse the old ones.

Enjoy all of your videos and have ordered parts thru you before. Appreciate you making these videos available. Just changed brakes and rotors on our ‘06 Ranger. 2 days later after finishing brake fluid change/bleed my daughter is driving and front right bearing fails. So I know I messed at least one thing up. When taking that 27mm nut off I was taken aback by how easy it was put on. Well when putting it back on I tightened the living $hit out of it. Not sure foot lbs but used 2 ft pipe for leverage. Is this the root cause of the failure? 2nd. I put brand new rotors on. Do I need to take the races out of them when replacing the bearings? I also did not have that seal on the back side/inner portion of the rotor. So wondering about that too. By overtightenening the nit did I create tension to not allow bearings to roll freely? I did this to both sides. So I know I have to redo everything. Would the bearings have wrecked the new rotors? Front right tire was at a oretty good angle when she pulled off the highway. Thanks if you can answer this from a dumb KZfaq mechanic.

How much play is acceptable with these tapered bearings? I checked mine and there is a very tiny amount of play with the wheel attached but not sure if it's enough to warrant replacing them.

I was always taught to not touch bearings with bare hands. Skin oils can cause corrosion due to heat, even under grease. Alldatadiy has the freeplay specs for bearings and the torque specs for the spindle nut. I used this to be sure that mine were tight enough, without being too tight. Great videos though! Thanks!

+Alex Zarazua This is not necessary if you are just replacing your rotors, however, if your bearing and hub assemblies need replacing it is smart to do them at the same time as you will already be dismantling that part of the vehicle.

if you can simply use a flat driver and/or a large socket to remove and install the races and bearings, why use a bearing press kit? 🤷‍♂ is a bearing press only used for certain hubs?

I think it would help to clean the rust off the rotor before you begin pulling the old bearing races out. If any junk gets in the new grease, you just ruined your repair sometime down the road.

No that nut isn't supposed to be super tight, and the average human has no clue what torque ratings feel like. I've yet to come across ONE mechanic who isn't shocked by the first time they use a torque wrench to 80ft lbs.. If it vibrates use the torque wrench and lock Tite

If you want to know how far to pound the races in, use your ears. As your races contact "all the way home", the sound when you pound will change, compared to when they aren't seated all the way. Trust me, you'll hit the races enough times to recognize that the sound is audibly different. Think of a clink, clink, clink sound, suddenly becoming a "clunk". I have poor hearing, and I can tell the obvious difference. Pound em in evenly, for sure, and when greasing the new nearings (or the cleaned up old ones), put a glob of grease in your palm, and press the bearing into your greased palm. Turn the bearing round and round and keep pressing. This will fill your bearings up nice and slimy. And clean up your hands before handling the rotor. Use Brakecleen to make that rotor perfectly clean, even after handing it with clean hands.

The bearing isn't even 1/2 lubricated ~ look up how to repack wheel bearings . The bearing lock nut should never be left tight . Not a bad video but not terrific either . -Nate

Torque for that nut is 18-20 in-lbs in the Haynes manual for Ford Rangers. It is the exact same value shown in my official 1999 Mazda B-3000 shop manual. That's not even 2 ft-lbs, but it is not loose. My digital torque wrenches do not go that low. I suppose that "tight" is relative to the mechanic.

Thanks Nate for this comment. You are absolutely correct. I learned 50 years ago how to pack bearings and it is a lot more than just smearing on a little grease on the outside. For all those folks out there that don't know how to do it, the correct way is to put a pile of grease in the palm of your hand and grab the bearing in the middle and "Need" the grease in through the outer rim of the bearing until it oozes out the other side and all through out the bearing. Turn the bearing about 6 times all the while continuing to press grease through the bearing rollers. Do not worry about too much grease. It will ooze out when the wheel turns after proper tightening.

I stopped at 5:00 ~ this IS NOT how you re pack a roller bearing ! . Go look it up, if you don't want to buy a $10 bearing packing tool it's dead easy using just your palm . Using a carpenter's hammer shows little knowledge of how thus job is done correctly . -Nate
