Used this video last night to replace a keyboard at home. Im technically a beginner but I'm not new to break fix. the task was a success 100% RECOMMEND THIS VIDEO I watched it in 0.5 speed and 0.25 speed. This process requires a lot of patience and care as it took me 4 hours to complete Yo must be careful when removingthe pieces as some are very fragile The rivets are hard to remove without the correct tool so I ended up cutting the ones I couldn't remove cleanly. Be sure to organize screws when re-assembling this is very important. You may need extra adhesive as well as some adhesive remover to savely remove the battery Good luck guys 😊

I did this work myself as an experienced electrical engineer and confident in board-level repair. Worst part is that the screws holding the display ribbon cable are incredibly tight. stripped all four of them in the process and had to use a donor laptop (spares). I wouldn't recommend heating the laptop - this is really unnecessary, just use a LOT of propanol and let it sit there for 20 minutes or so - it won't evaporate because it's not exposed to the air at all, then use an old credit-card style spudger to separate the battery from the chassis. It's not that difficult really. Also the rivets are a nicety from Apple. Realistically, you're killing dust and water protection when you do this and the rivets are just there to ensure a good seal between the key-wells and the double sided tape that is present around each and every key. There are enough remaining screws when it's all back together to hold it well against pressing from the user. I wouldn't bother with replacing the rivets with screws knowing that you've destroyed any warranty anyway. Also why on earth are there of those tiny little screws for each side of the antenna 🤣...

I had to fix a key on a Macbook 2010, MBP 2011, and 2012 and it was very easy and took a few minutes. I got a 2018 MBP that have a mess up key and Apple was like yeah we would have to replace the whole keyboard and that would be $600. Now seeing this video it is just insane amount of work just to replace a keyboard.

Nice video. Thanks for the help. FYI to all of those wondering. You mainly use Torx 3 and 5 bits, along with P 0.8 bits (especial on the keyboard removal), and a Hex 3 (or pliers as shown in the video). Get a piece of paper and make a map of everything you are taking off. I use 3 inch sections of folded over packing tape to hold all of the screws to the 'map' as they are removed. Some are longer than others so it's very important to make sure that you get them back in exactly the right location.

There are specialised screws meant for A1708 out now that does not require drilling to enlarge the holes. Alternatively, some of the rivets that are taken out can actually be reused and be punched back in. The way the battery is removed is not too good. It will be bent. While it will still work, the battery life will diminish and weeks to months later, it will suffer from sudden capacity drops or shutdown as the lithium cells are bent / damaged. I’ve got feedback from a few customers. A better way would be to use a thin plastic film and lots of ipa or electronic contact cleaner to slide the batteries out. The battery does not have to be totally removed either. Just the middle one will do. It can be flapped out enough to access the keyboard. An easier way of removing the keyboard would be to use a flat blade cutter to pry the rivets out.

Got a link for the screws you are talking about for this A1708? I've found that my screws that work for MacBook Airs and older pros are too big for the rivet holes in this MacBook.
@OWK000

They make small rivet removal tools that look like a mini pry bar or a bent flat screw driver with a slot in the middle. But, I saw a guy make his own tool from a small wide snipper plier in which he had drilled a hole in/at the cutting seam to lock around rivets and pull them easily: genius! You can get a cheap plier like that from Harbor Freight for $2.97. Worked better than the small pry bar. Thanks for the battery tips! I worry about the battery removal.

I stopped worrying about saving the battery and just installed a new one while I was in there. Order the keyboard and battery together. I usually order the backlight too - just in case I damage the old one. This job is not fun and can be mood altering :) Give yourself plenty of time and space and do the job beginning to end in one sitting. Coming back to it 'later' is more of a headache than it's worth.

 @Computer Geek's Repair A easier, safer method of removing the battery: Also remove trackpad. use "braid fishing line, 30 lbs strength" together with lots of isopropyl alcohol. apply isopropyl alcohol 1ml at a time, wait a minute, then pass braid fishing line under battery and carefully start puling the fishing line under the battery in "sawing" motion. (pull with left hand while using right hand only to keep tension, then pull with right hand while using left hand only to keep tension.) repeat motion for 1 minute, then apply 1ml more of isopropyl alcohol and continue this cycle until battery comes loose. This way you don't bend the battery and have least risk of damage.

This is definitely a money-saving method to replace the keyboard, but the easier way would be to order the entire top case online, like eBay. I got a brand new top case that came with the keyboard, speakers, battery, etc. for only a couple hundred dollars. There are obvious stuff you must transfer over such as logic controller and touch ID button (touch id button is mated to the logic controller), but the process is way less pain-staking than this.

the rivots are 0.5mm diameter. You can purchase a set of screws specifically for A1708 which you can use without drilling, unless a part of the rivot was left behind in which case you would need 0.5mm drill bit. If you have A1278 screws then you need a 1mm drill bit. Use dremel type drill with speed control, a manual drill, or even better, a drill press to ensure the holes are drilled at a straight angle.

Very misleading title. You should name this: “look at me replace a MacBook keyboard,” because not once did you answer a commenter’s question on tools needed, nor did you specify basic and necessary details in your video. And why do you not omit the parts we shouldn’t do - just to show you went through the extra work? You can’t even zoom in on your detail and you omit or speed up the parts we should see slower if we were truly watching an instructional video. I just replaced my keyboard by trial and error and all I, or anyone who did this, really needed to know was screwdrivers types and sizes, that’s a necessary detail and is ultra-time consuming! There are so many types used for this project. It became very clear to me while I was doing this that you purposely left the “how-to” part out and aren’t answering questions. To anyone who has done this, it is clear this is you showing the world THAT you did it, not how TO do it.
