Some people complain about the length of the video, because they think they can gain all the knowledge they need in 5 minutes. I appreciate all time you invest in making the video's. The uploads take a lot of time so I wait on Sundays for what ever time they get posted. Thanks Taryl and the crew of lawnmower monsters.

I agree. It's particularly helpful to watch an experienced mechanic work through unforeseen problems that often bedevil the amateur, a rusted bolt here, a seized PTO there.

I've been watching this particular video since Sunday. I've broken it up into about 4 parts. It doesn't matter to me if I learn anything new or not, odds are I'll never work on a Kawasaki mower engine. These videos have a calming, almost therapeutic, effect on me and I enjoy every minute.

Those people really p**s me off. No one is strapping you down and making you watch it all. Watch a bit and come back or skip forward. Even those with genuine ADHD can work around it but there can be a lot of info to get out and it's important that Taryl tells us ALL we need to know. The sketches and comedy is great too. Moaning about the length of the video, shut up and get out of 'ere.!!! Knuckleheads...

i welded a large worn out socket to the end of my air hammer tool and then cut it off to about 1/4" deep. It surrounds the bolt head and doesn't slip off anymore because the bolt head is in a pocket. Dinner Time!

My Bolens by MTD w/15.5 Briggs & Stratton needs its rebuild, I'm bringing it to you guys. I have rear end that slips in the lower (1-3) speed selector. Im not sure if its just the belt or if the driveline needs to be replaced or rebuilt. My dad gave me this tractor after he did all kinds of work to the deck. New blades, belts, pulleys, and I'll never het rid of it. My dad died 10 days after he gave it to me. So you guys are gonna be the ones to make her like new again. Your Channel is great and i love how you guys know what your doing. I'm looking forward to the day I bring it up there. Ill be driving up from Florida. Later Guys.

Some camshaft lobes have a little extra 'hump' on them (exhaust lobe) that relieves compression at partial piston compression stroke, for ease in starting, and NO valve lash adjustment should be made at that point. BUT if engine is put at TDC comp stroke (both valves closed) you needn't worry about that comp. release feature on some engines. I'm sure Taryl knows this, as he is very smart!

Wow, what a magnificent video. Totally complete. I just had John Deere replace my plastic cam with the steel cam gear. Cost me 1,000 dollars but I think it was worth it. Lots of labor involved but you make it doable. Thanks Daryl for your expertise. Love you to man!

IMO comes down to a few things... how good are you at this sorta thing? Do you have the tools, space, and time to do the job? Do you like or want to do the job? Whats your time worth to you? If your earning 50+ an hour doing something else, I'd rather spend the time doing something I'm good at as opposed to something I like to do but am not good at..... So if it takes a guy who's done this before a good 5 or 6 hours.... it might take me 15+ hours to get it all done. If I can earn anywhere close to what the labor rate is I'm going to be paying, I'd rather just pay the labor rate and earn the money to pay for it. Bonus points if you get any kind of warranty on the work / parts when you get the service done. I don't mind tinkering with small engines, but it comes down to a time value proposition and if your set up to do the work / able to do the work / and are interested to do the work. This one's probably out of my league just because I don't have anyone to help me lift that engine out. Pay John Deere to do it and then go earn some money mowing lawns with your newly rebuilt baby!

This reminds me of watching," Untold Stories of the E.R." Sometimes when we get the bill our frustration will be so high that we sometimes forget the hard work, and years of study guys like this put in so as to gain the knowledge, and skill level required in their professions. It's not very often that guys like this get to actually relax and let their hair down, they have to keep their mind engaged on the current challenge . The risk is just too great for them to ever laugh and interact with their peers. Their calling is higher than just a paycheck. I wish they had professionals like this working in the Veterans Administration Hospitals.

Thanks for the video, your time & effort to share with us ! The company who picks up your used oil & oil filters probably also has a anti-freeze & absorbent recycling program or knows who does locally. I worked for one that did. I believe I would have tried to collect most of that anti-freeze neatly, as opposed to getting it mixed in with the used oil & all over the floor. The reason for numbering or marking internal engine parts is because they are worn to their respective mating surfaces. Probably not so critical on a mower engine. Other than that, a good tutorial on how to replace the cam on a cow a sockie engine on a JD mower.

Great video Tayrl/Junior/Slippers. (Andy) This is the reason why I advised my friends to buy the 325 J.D.,the 325 was a single cylinder 17hp.air cooled Kawasaki engine, but it has the metal cam ⚙⬅gear in it and will outlast the FD-590V Liquid Cooled P.O.S.(Piece/Of/STUFF HAHA!!)in this video.(no chance of issues with coolant leaking, having to be messin'with anti-freeze etc.) Now,to the best of my knowledge, according to Kawasaki, the FD-590V and the FD-731V are NO LONGER being mfg.,if you look at the newest version of this tractor,it uses the AIR-COOLED engine model FS-730 E.F.I.(Electronic Fuel Injected)engine, this engine is in the latest updated mid-sized John Deere model X-590,which came out in late 2016,the model just before this one was the X-584 and it has the Kawasaki FS-730V CARBORATED engine in it and the X-584 came out in early 2016. BOTH of these engines are AIR-COOLED and to the best of my knowledge, also have METAL CAM GEARS in them.⚙⬅(metal cam gear in both engines)

Taryl you are the man! Thanks to your video we got it fixed in a few hours with a buddy. Air chisel on the crank worked perfectly. We got away without removing the radiator and only lost minimal coolant. Used some 2x4 boards to lay the engine on top of the rad without damaging the fill port. We called it the rat turd Kawasaki the whole time. When she fired up I let out a big ol YEEE YEE! Love the channel!

Cam gear failure is unheard of on the 15 and 17hp liquid Kawasaki’s in the 1990’s lx178 and 188 series. Seems to be more prone to the bigger engines for some reason. They make a steel gear for them as a replacement.

Taryl & GrassRats. Thanks so much for your videos. I have a 285 John Deere with the FD590V engine with a bad water pump that has not been used for years now. The engine runs great other than the water pump issue. I’m guessing that my 285 has pretty much all of the same things to disconnect that the engine in the video had. After watching the video, I may go ahead and swap out the plastic cam for the metal cam. What better time to make the swap.

Great videos Taryl. In my area I need to use pre-mixed radiator fluid or when I mix my own I used distilled water. The tap water here will destroy the cooling system with the minerals in the water.
