How to Replace Trailer Boards on a 16 Foot Trailer

How to Replace Trailer Boards and hardware on a 16 foot utility (flatbed) trailer. This can be done by 1 person. I made a fulcrum to get the center boards secured into the front and back channels, which is shown in the video. This allows for the boards to bend, and pop into the back channel.

1. 13 - 2x6x16 treated boards
2. Carriage bolts, lock washers, and nuts
3. Circular saw
4. Sawzall
5. Drill
6. Crowbar
7. Hammer
8. Ratchet strap
9. Cordless drill
10. Scrap wood

I think I would have taken the opportunity to paint that frame once the boards had been removed and then let the paint cure for a week before replacing boards.

What size carriage bolts did you use and what type of coating?

Not sure on size since it was what I had lying around for years in the shop, and they were galvanized bolts.

when cutting the boards how much do you allow so you can install them on the trailer ?

goodness, I really can't remember...maybe nothing more than a 1/4" or less. I didn't want them to be too short after they popped in to place and not fit on the front and rear lip of the trailer. You could always cut them to the full length you need, try the fulcrum like I did in the vid, and if they don't go in, cut a tad off.

Were you able to line up the new bolts with the old screw holes? I'm doing this same thing but worried about the holes not lining up and ending up with a ton of holes in the frame... It seems there's no way to really line it up perfectly?

Nope, I redrilled everything and used carriage bolts since the trailer business only used self tapping screws. I will reuse the larger holes again in the future amd drill from underneath up to the boards next go around.

@@JRMSweeps thanks for the reply. My issue with drilling from beneath was that when the wooden board is resting on the frame, it’s pitch black and there’s no sight of the exit hole to ensure you drill straight. My metal frame piece is like 4” though, so that’s what makes it a bit tough. Any advice? I’m a newbie lol

@@JJDoesLife grab a white paint pen and draw a circle around where the holes are under the trailer with the boards off. Then, use a flashlight to hone in on the holes and drill from underneath. If you have a really bright LED light source, you can probably forego the paint pen. That is what I would do.

@@JRMSweeps Thanks for the reply. The drill bit I am drilling up with is as thick as the hole, so it cuts out all light. Did I misunderstand? Lol

Im confused. If you are able to find the hole under the trailer, with the boards on the trailer, are you not able to drill from underneath through the boards completely to make the new board holes?

I didn’t realize trailer decks were bolted into the frame with self tapping screws, did they think we’ll just buy a new trailer when we need to replace the deck? Lol

Every company is different. I bought my trailer new at a great price with a title, so that didn't bother me at the time. It did create additional work removing the worn-out screws, but now that I have the new hardware installed, I can use the newly drilled holes for new hardware next time.
