Oh I’m so glad I found you. I bought a sansevieria that is glued into a pot with very small rocks glued in. Someone told me it would never grow because it was just cuttings. It was braided but I loosened that. Suddenly I saw little baby growing. I was very excited but had no idea how it burst through that glued rock. I cannot loosen it. I’ve banged it but I don’t want to harm the plant. So should I repot? I just don’t know if I should leave it alone til it gets bigger or repot
@OhioTropics
@OhioTropics 3 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed the video Lorri! These are pretty incredible plants, and often times if they're left in the same pot for a long time, they will even literally break the pot as the root system grows! If you can't remove the glued rocks, maybe just leave it. It's so frustrating when plants are sold this way! If the plant is not root-bound, I would leave it in the same pot for now. Good luck!

Great and informative video explaining thoroughly för beginners like myself! Is it common to place a plastic pot inside with the plant, but still cover the outside of the plastic one with soil? Is that done solely for the aesthetic or does it have a function? Either way, it turned out beautifully - thank you!
@OhioTropics
@OhioTropics 3 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed the video :-) This practice is pretty common. I like to do this because when it comes time to repot, it's always easier to take a plant out of a plastic nursery pot. Another benefit is that you can slip the plant inside any decorative pot that you want and even change it up! There is no right or wrong as long as the plant is growing in a pot that has drainage holes.

Once the tips turn yellow, that leaf will not grow any new green tips unfortunately. Have you kept your soil super dry or perhaps even wet for too long? Those can both cause yellow tips.

I just bought a tiny little pot of this variety of Sansevieria. There’s 6, 4 inch tubes. They seem to be rooted but I’m assuming they’re just young cuttings at the moment. Should I repot them all together but spaced out or leave them in a clump? I can’t find much online on what to do with cylindrica cuttings.

Hi there! It really is personal preference. There is no right or wrong. If you want a fuller plant, leave it the way it is. These don't grow terribly fast so it may be a good option. If you want more plants, you can divide them. There is no right or wrong.

A leaf on my plant has turned yellow and shriveled. Does that mean it's overwatered or underwatered? Someone told me ridges meant underwatered but I also read that yellow means overwatered
@OhioTropics
@OhioTropics 4 жыл бұрын
It can be very confusing and often times, you will get yellow leaves from both of those! When you notice a yellow leaf, or any issue, you should immediately check the soil. It will tell you exactly what happened. In my experience with helping people, many are so scared to water properly that they end up underwatering their plants substantially. My best advice is always to water thoroughly, let the water drain out the drainage holes, and wait until the top couple inches or so (at least) has dried out before watering these again. You can let them get completely dry, but don't wait forever to water again. Hope this helps!

Yes absolutely! It will retain moisture for a bit longer, so maybe do 2 parts of that potting mix and 1 part perlite. You should be ok. Only repot if it's really pot bound, and when you do repot, only go up the next size up. For example, if you have it in a 4 inch pot, only go up to a 6 inch pot.

Something to think about that may help...So many people think that everything is caused by overwatering. In many cases, when I ask people questions about the potting mix moisture, often times it's quite dry. Many people are scared to water properly, and/or are keeping their plants in poor light. I would actually feel the potting mix, rather than just assume that it was due to overwatering. I also would not use a moisture meter. I'm not sure if you're using one, but they're awful. If you keep your plant in good light in front of a window, are watering thoroughly , and letting it dry out in between watering, that's all you need to do with these plants. Hope this helps a bit!

I have one of these for a couple of months now and I noticed this week that 2 maybe 3 of those spikes are going wrinkled and a bit loose near the base. Because the weather in Portugal has been a little humid and dark and rainy I think I only watered it once since I bought it. So what I did yesterday was give it a nice soak (its been a while like a month since I watered it and soil was dry) and moved it to a brighter spot nearest an east facing window. Beacuse my trifasciata is doing so well with the same watering schedule and light I was surprised to see those wrikled spikes that I interpreted as underwater. Could you advise if this kind needs any special requirements? I know they love sunlight but all I can offer at the moment is bright light. Thanxz

You'll often see them sold this way, but it's obviously not how the plant grows naturally. You can try unbraiding it if you don't mind the look of it. @OhioTropics
@OhioTropics 5 жыл бұрын
I assume you are referring to an anthurium that I repotted many months ago that I showed on Instagram. Perhaps you may not have read the caption of that post. The reason I took a hammer to that pot was because I didn't want to damage my prized Anthurium that I've had for over a dozen years. The plant was worth more to me than an inexpensive terra cotta pot so this was the safest way I could take the plant out. I reuse the broken terra cotta pot to use as pot shards to cover drainage holes when I repot other plants.

It is not too many in the pot at all. Actually the twisted ones are very bad for your plant's growth. That's not how they grow naturally even though some stores sell them that way. If you like the look of the twisted or braided ones, you can do that, but you'll find it will be a lot of maintenance and your growth will diminish over time.
