HOW TO RETIRE EARLY WITH FINANCIAL FREEDOM - Retirement 2020. We have used F.I.R.E. Financial Independence Retire Early without really knowing it, in seventeen years using pay yourself first, accelerated mortgage payments and dollar cost averaging, we managed to retire at 55 and be financially independent.
We used our house as investments as well as the family home, knowing we would sell it and rent an apartment. The Wealthy Barber book by David Chiltern was a large inspiration to us to actually start, we took small and consistent steps which led us to financial freedom. Anyone can do it overtime even with a modest income.
F.I.R.E. does work and paying yourself first using direct debit and sending your money to a savings vehicle is an easy way to start your journey to early retirement and financial freedom.
We are not investment advisers or licenced financial professionals, you should seek advice from qualified professionals. We just wanted to share our story and encourage the viewer to help themselves.

My dad gave me a copy of The Wealthy Barber when I got married in 1991. I remember reading it and thinking I can't save anything because things were so tight financially at the time. But the message sunk in and when things got a little better we started saving. Another book I found helpful was The Millionaire Next Door.

I know this video is 9 months old, and I have watched many of your other videos, but this reminded me of what I did at age 35, i.e. reading self help books, and educating myself which I find many people are truly reluctant to do. I chose everything that you did and now I'm retired, although I waited until 65 because of our health insurance situation in the USA, which is a major factor. At 65 years of age we get Medicare, which is minimal insurance with supplements that we have to pay for, but at least it is something. I took it and never looked back and I don't regret retiring at all. Frankly, I don't know how I dealt with those people at my job for all of the years that I was there. I thought I enjoyed it, but I think insanity had a lot to do with it. Ms. L. Churchill

We loved your story. Our story is somewhat similar. It was one book to get us started and off we went. We started in 2002 I think it was and the goal was to retire at 50. Life through us some curveballs but we made it when I was mid-way through 50, we pulled the plug. That is what got us starting to travel North America in our RV fulltime. You may have just inspired us to tell our story as well. Thank you so much for sharing this. You two are so wonderful. ❤️👍👏 Donovan & Jodi

I love your story. I think the majority of millionaires in the US are just regular people who saved, invested, and lived within their means. Our retirement story starts even younger. Uncharted saving for retirement at age 26. I put 10% in a tax deferred savings account through my employer. When Is laws changed I raised it to 15%. Now we maximize the Irs allowances plus the fifty year catch up amount. But we are lucky that we also have a sting pension. We always loved within our means and paid off our house last year
@ThisIsOurRetirement
@ThisIsOurRetirement 3 жыл бұрын
We read lots of books growing up about finances learning as we went, one of the stand out books we liked was “The Millionaire Next Door”, it had great research and examples of how the majority of regular millionaires lived. We have a government savings plan called the TFSA the money you put in is regulated to $6500 each year each and the money you put in is after tax you can invest in any type of investment vehicle and it grows tax free and on withdrawal is tax free, so it’s like a mini offshore fund, so we have maxed that out, meaning any income from that does not disqualify you from receiving lower income support from the Canadian pension plan.

We both retired at 55, after doing the same job at a local college for 12 years. I always believed in pouring money into my pension from my 30s and paying the maximum amount I could on our mortgage, which allowed to have our mortgage payed of early. Two unexpected redundancies (one for Mrs Metalman) in my 30s and 40s did not help but still allowed the early retirement plan but at a reduced pot of money. Still the best decision we have both ever made but we both decided that we wanted a small part time job each, after a year to expel the excess energy we both still had. Mrs Metalman stopped her 12 hours a week job 3 years ago but I am still working, as a school caretaker 2 days a week, as I love it, love the people and love the school. After a hernia last year and a bad knee this year, I have decided to finish all together next March and I am 25 percent looking forward to it but 75 percent dreading it, as I will miss it dreadfully but my body is telling me to stop. Good to hear it has worked out for you both, cheers Alan

Hi Alan that’s great you retired early, thanks for sharing your story and it sounds like the part time jobs we’re a perfect fit for you . I know you are not looking forward to March but maybe look at it that as one door closes another will open with new opportunities. I really enjoy swimming, I meet a lot of people in the pool with Knee issues that find it a very therapeutic way to exercise that’s not hard on the body. Also a hot tub is good ours is closed at the moment due to the Coronavirus. Hope you both have a great Sunday Cheers Norm and Tina 🍷👍🍺😎

Hello, when you here these theories it makes so much sense, it’s unfortunate that so many people are blind to it. We use asset allocation and tax free savings programs to even out fluctuations. The biggest investment in Canada is this curious quirk, put your money in a big banks savings account and get less than 1% interest or buy the big banks stock and get 5.5% dividend quarterly. Thanks for your book recommendation, we also read the “The Millionaire Next Door”, has fascinating research. Thanks for watching and leaving a great comment we appreciate it.

The people that I know that don't want to retire early are the ones who truly found their "calling". If you love what you do, you'll never "work" a day in your life. I have worked for some architects, and lots of them seem to enjoy what they are doing and keep up to much older ages. I imagine some doctors to be the same, etc. For me, I don't "love" my work, I work to live - so I will retire as early as I can make it work. I don't hate my work or anything like that, but I'm just not in love with it like some people are. I wish I had pursued something that I truly loved.

Don’t underestimate the retirement income from government, also if you can get debt free it helps so much. We do a lot to stay healthy like walking for an hour each day and eating healthy foods. We took early retirement to capitalize on our good health. Prior to COVID-19 we had a good 5 years of travel, which made us start our KZfaq channel. So we are hoping for a good future where we can travel again. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.

I remember his book and it made things simple indeed ! If I had to do things over , I would buy a small house and then continue to keep moving up ….go from a $ 50,000 to a bigger one at say $ 100,000, then go to the next level home of $ 200,000 and keep going on and on ( all the while keeping the present home as principal residence .)After 50 years, your principal residence could be over $ 3,000,000 … all tax free !

Very interesting, thanks for sharing! We are keen to get ourselves mortgage free as quickly as possible to help with our retirement. I am define going to read that book :) We seem to be on the same schedule as you guys here in Scotland with restaurants and shops opening up now. We have been very careful staying home as much as we can. It's been tough for our 10 year old not being able to play with friends but thankfully she is now able to to so and diesnt need to socially distance. Also she is able to at last hug her grandparents!! Do you feel safe going out to restaurants and shopping, meeting friends etc? I feel although our transmission rates our very low, I will carry on being careful! Being told here by our Government to expect second peak in Winter.....what a thought!! Stay safe both of you!!! Dx

As things open here people are forgetting what’s happening and flocking to the beach etc , then the numbers go up we haven’t seen any friends at all socially we do Face time Audio Happy hours 🍷🍺which work great .Also we have from the start worn masks 😷in any store we go to , have a great weekend Cheers 🍷👍🍺

Hey Tina and Norm! So great to see you guys, and we are experiencing a heat wave here too. At least you're not having to deal with any snow yet LOLOLOL!! We are enjoying your financial series and it's definitely informative. That's great to hear your story on how you were able to retire, both so young. Actually it's cool to hear that you didn't start investing until you were 38 and were able to retire at 55 and 58. People would seem to think you must have started investing at 20, to retire so early. But amazing to hear!! We also invest and have diversification and also dividend payments, which really make a big difference at the end of the year, and quarterly too. Some years are better than others, but the dividends are a nice added bonus. Same here in the US, very hard to get a job with any pensions these days, unless you have a Government job.. that's about it. Quick question for you both.. Looking back at when you bought a home as compared to now.. renting, you had mentioned how much you loved renting, compared to owning a home. Going back would you have still bought your home, or rented all along to have more money for investments instead of mortgage??? That's great that restaurants and gyms are opening up around you and things are looking up. We hope this passes here soon too. Great video and love you guys to the mother effin' moon!!

It’s great to hear from both of you, thanks for your continued support. You bring up a very valid question about buying or renting a house long term. If you are extremely disciplined in your life from excessive spending then “on paper”, renting might be more cost effective for a financial return....but and there is always a but, you wouldn’t have enough allowance in tax sheltered investments, so once you maxed out your 401k? Your interest income would be taxed at your highest rate because it will be lumped into you salaries. Buying a home is a sort of tax shelter, being your primary residence so you don’t pay tax when you finally sell it at retirement. Once you retire your income will likely fall into a lower tax bracket without a company pension so you will pay less tax on your income generated from the home sale. We are pretty sure if we could do it again, we would buy the house as we in our younger days were a little to tempted to buy stuff lol. Heh snow is a four letter word around here 🤣☃️ Have an awesome weekend and Google buy house v renting and do get a professionals advice, we are just amateurs at finances.

@@ThisIsOurRetirement Just so you know, that is true for Canadians, but for Americans I believe they pay Capital gains tax on the sale of their house. This is likely because unlike Canadians, they get to write off their mortgage interest from their income taxes for all their years of having a mortgage (which we Canadians do not).

@@ThisIsOurRetirement I think I may have been mistaken about the capital gains tax on house sales in the US. It seems they do get exemption up to a certain dollar amount. So, if the house made a huge profit then they'd pay, but if it was within a certain dollar value they don't pay on the sale of their home. The US generally pays less tax than us Canadians I think.

Walked into the bank about 4 years ago with the money in hand to pay the mortgage off. Guess what the girl on the other side of the desk says? You don’t want to pay it off, you can invest in out mutual fund accounts and make .2% more interest than you are paying on your mortgage. Ah, no, I’m paying it off, there is no guarantee with mutual funds and then I have to pay tax on it and pay fund management fees too. We, north of the 49th. can’t claim mortgage interest on our taxes if so then perhaps but no thanks. Mortgage paid and done! I’m not saying I have no mutual fund investments as I do and have seen the up and down craziness this year. So I have 0 debts a good amount of investments and this is freedom. Cheers! 🍻🥂

There is priceless feeling when you can pay off a mortgage, it's an achievement far more than buying a mutual fund. If you have a rental unit in your house in Canada, you CAN claim up to 50% of your mortgage interest + property taxes + utilities + maintenance-type expenses on your taxes. Also, as a single person, I couldn't avoid buying 'too much house' - unless I rented out half of it.
