Fatty liver disease is a growing epidemic, and a growing cause of liver destruction. Dr. Jason Fung reviews how fatty liver disease develops and shares insights on how to reverse this disease naturally, without needing drugs or surgery. Fatty liver disease is mainly a dietary disease, and therefore, the treatment involves fixing the diet. Check out my blog at / drjasonfung

How much starch/carbohydrates did they feed them to get overweight? (1 bowl = 130 calories) 10 bowls of white rice in a day is 1300 calories. And you are still calorie deficient below the 2200-2400 daily calorie. That's 3 bowls of rice in the morning, 3 bowls of rice at lunch and 4 bowls of rice for dinner.

I was a teen in the late 1970's and most all of my friends drank either Coke or Pepsi. I distinctly remember the summer when all of the big soda companies switched from sugar to high fructose corn sweetener. We all noticed that Coke and Pepsi had a slightly different taste. The crazy thing is, those dates corelate with the increase in fatty liver disease from your chart.

People say they want more healthcare providers like Dr Fung, but two of my friends got in trouble for recommending fasting to their patients. One in particular, a nurse practitioner, was FIRED after a couple went and complained about him recommending fasting. The thing about it is that he is so caring and knowledgeable. I couldn’t believe it. I told him to open a practice or join a more supportive practice. Bottom line is that some people can’t fathom not stuffing their faces every hour of the day and prefer western medicine. What a shame!

@@tienngo9993 - I believe the issue is that industry and pharma leading guidance. Is in the sense of pushing medicine and their own products one way or another! Government guides made by people with direct interest in the outcome! They sponsor conferences, medical seminars and a vast etc. for what?! To push their products! Up selling. It's that simple! Big pharma still "invite" MD to seminars in vacation paradise's! Covering full expenses for a couple of weeks! What's the return? I guess we all know! ;-) Personally I believe that's on the verge of criminal behavior, but I'm no one!

A bigger problem is the food industry and the lack of proper nutrition training for docs (they’re still based on old studies). Another huge problem would be patient compliance. Most people won’t do what they need to if it means giving up bad habits. They’d rather pop a pill. My mother is like that.

Yes, free! Fasting means eating less food in total. Also, the food industry keeps trying to overfed us. "Supersize...upsize" . Family blocks of chocolate have become daily snacks instead of occasional festive treats and have grown exponentially in size ;). Soda drinks sizes, movie theatre popcorn buckets, triple meat burgers et cetera.

During my regular check-ups and related blood tests for about 15 years doctors have been remarking, "hmmm, looks like you have a fatty liver. Are you a heavy drinker?" When the answer was no, and I asked what was causing it, they would say, 'hmm, don't know. Well, there's no problem so just let me know if you do develop a problem." Then they would go on to comment that I had high triglycerides. I would ask why that is since I had adjusted my diet to reduce fat intake. "Hmmm, don't know." And they were happy I was eating more rice and pasta in place of meat. And so on, through the development of pre-diabetes up to the brink of diabetes. Thank goodness for the information available on youtube. I'm addressing the problems myself with the help of guys like Dr. Fung.

I totally relate with that! I also went trough the pre-diabetes...diabetes odyssey! Without a single word of advise regarding high carbs, etc. The ONLY thing was pills and more pills! This went for a few years! Until the absolutely null results. In fact not just null results, I was getting worse!! Lead me to try and find an answer. In this case on the internet. Dr. Fung videos came to the rescue and, and, and... Intermittent fasting and Keto= NO diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. It's that simple, cheap, fast and extremely effective! What's not to like it?! LOL 😂 Without some real expertise guidance. I continued doing the "traditional" diet. With all the carbs/starch, etc. Just like millions others, I was killing myself one bite at a time! Without knowing!

Same here, same problems, same reactions from MD's. Realized that most doctors only know what Big Pharma tells them. (I was a nurse for 47 years) Doctors used to treat diseases/illnesses - now they only treat symptoms ("There is a pill for that!") I brought that up with my internist, who admitted that I was correct. However, she is one of the rebel doctors who does not buy into all the Big Pharma hype - she told me that I could reverse my type 2 DM with a proper keto diet, and has recmmended various herbal products for other health concerns, some of which she uses herself. A rare doctor in this day and age!

People, don´t normalize obesity, don´t encourage people to have bad eating habits, this is really serious and in the final stages it hurts so much because the person that you love does not look the same, it´s like they´re disintegrating while alive (and it really is that).

I have been following Dr. Fung's suggestions for about 1 year. Most of my diabetic symptoms were gone in 10 weeks. But, I suppose that my insulin resistance is still a problem. When I relapse and eat a high carb meal, my fasting glucose level become elevated and stays elevated for about 1 week. On a more positive note, during my last annual checkup, my a1c and fasting glucose level are no longer considered diabetic or even prediabetic. So, I guest I am managing my condition well. I think I have a lot more work ahead of me. For people who are starting their journey, I would suggest patience.

Months ago I had bloodwork done for a checkup. I’m overweight (I’ll be 48 next month) and wanted to start taking care of myself. My triglycerides and liver enzymes were all in the normal range. Recently, I’ve been having discomfort on my right side and having issues with laying and sleeping on that side. I knew I had gallstones for years, but was worried something more was going on. I asked my dr for a complete abdominal ultrasound. I found out through the ultrasound that I have a non alcoholic fatty liver! The blood tests were not accurate. I am planning on fasting, trying to clean up my diet, herbs and acupuncture etc. I wanted share this in hopes someone sees this and gets an ultrasound. Also if you are 45 and over please get a carotid artery ultrasound. It’s super important to see how much plaque is in your system. Especially going to your brain. I found out my right carotid is actually slightly twisted and there is some plaque. The American diet is killing us. Fasting and clean eating are the answer

Very important note as Dr. Fung points out:. Slender people develop fatty liver too. From the intake of carbohydrates at high levels. You must be careful not to stuff children with candy / other carbohydrates or you'll burn out the B cells in the pancreas and then they can develop type 1 diabetes. As well many adults have been developing type 1 as well. Our Liver is a major hub of us being healthy. 16+ hours a day of fasting is a good start to reversing NAFLD. Also, I eat lots of chia seeds. It helps. Thanks for reading. Peace.

Since type 2 diabetes or prediabetes is nearly always precipitated by NAFLD (Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease), if I had the power to rewrite the rules that govern the standard of care for all physicians who treat people who are diabetic or prediabetics I would: 1. Make it mandatory that all clinicians watch Dr. Fung's explanation of fatty liver 2. Insist that the FIRST line of treatment, BEFORE the dispensing of drugs, is to put the prediabetic or diabetic patient on a low carb diet in conjunction with an intermittent fasting protocol 3. I would make the non-compliance by doctors of the first two directives tantamount to medical malpractice. That is how important this concept is.

The problem is that doctors NEVER care about your diet. They see a symptom, treat it, then send you home. Meanwhile the actual problem is ignored and getting worse. You would think that nutrition would be part of medical courses and a big part of the job... but it's not. In fact many doctors themselves are overweight. They can't even take care of themselves, yet they are being trusted with others.

I once had fatty liver. My job was very stressful, i had a very long commute to and from work in heavy traffic, i wasn't sleeping much. And i was eating fast food to save time. No symptoms, so my annual physical results on the liver enzyme tests was a shock. I immediately switched to black coffee (instead of the 3-in-1 from my company vendo), avoided soft drinks and juices etc. I moved to a less stressful job that didn't have a long commute. Took turmeric, started walking regularly and took yoga classes (coz i had more time to take care of myself). Reversed it in about 3 yrs i think (perhaps coz we are rice eaters and i didn't know about IF/keto yet). My insurance agent couldn't believe it and kept asking how i did it coz she rarely sees reversals. The phlegm i always had in my throat also went away after that. I always wondered why i didn't have a cold but felt like i had a low-grade fever a lot of the time.

There is one variable that you may be missing here, and that's Choline. Choline is required to export fats from the liver. Choline deficiency has been shown to induce fatty liver on pretty much any diet in PEMT knockout mice (PEMT is the gene that allows us to produce a limited amount of choline indigenously). If you're low carb diet group ate more eggs, liver, or other choline rich foods, this might also account for the benefit. Dietary fat has to be exported through the liver in the same way, so I'm guessing that what the diet actually did was reduce overfeeding with some possible benefit from increased dietary choline.

I am 37, had NAFLD for a few years watching it get worse and worse. I ate 5-6 times a day thinking it was healthy. Never skipping breakfast I was soooo hungry by 11 if I had no snack, that I would get a headache. Skipping lunch was unthinkable and I felt sleepy after it. I never liked heat but I noticed I started to feel so bad in hot summers I was no use for my family.I gained more and more weight, thing not extreme, 105kg by 1.9m tall. I finally decided to change after my last doctor visit. I started with healthy Keto, then added IF skipping breakfast. First with coffee plus mct oil, then just water. Now after 2 months I can skip breakfast and by lunchtime I really don't want to eat. I lost 10 kg in 2 months with no real exercise but the best part - I completely fixed my liver. ultrasound and blood tests confirmed all in norm. I can not believe this success and I feel so much better. I plan to keep going and gradually increase my activity. Big thank you to you Dr. Fung for what you do.

Our believes on food are always ingrained with commercials interests or based on old believes and traditions. For instance, the patato was imported into Europe from America’s in the mid 1500’s because it’s unrivalled nutritional value and it’s relative easiness to cultivate. It saved people from famine and has taken a center place in nutrition. Today in our world of abundance and sedentary lifestyle it is still deemed absolutely important but isn’t really necessary anymore. So is understanding how your body works a cure or a treatement? Thanks Dr. Jason Fung! I agree. I was able to reverse my fatty liver by following a zero carb and IF. I bought and read also your books about cancer, diabetes and obesity. More power to you!

Great video, Dr. Fung. Pre keto/IF, my triglycerides were over 400. Seven months after my lifestyle change, my triglycerides are 98 and falling.

I fast minimum 16 to 18 hours each day at this time. In the beginning I primarily followed 20/4. Some days OMAD. I’ve lost 67 pounds, but the loss has slowed. I need to tighten my schedule again. @@cJroma316
