A larger stomach can get in the way when rowing as I experienced a few years ago. I share with you how I dealt with it in this video.
I do want to repeat that although I do go on to talk about how to lose weight, this is just for those who want to. I'm not trying to say if you have a large stomach you must lose it.
And of course, if you're starting an exercise regime - if you're coming to it for the first time, or the first time in a long time, it may be worth checking with a doctor that you're healthy enough to do so.

🔵🔵🔵 SHOWING SUPPORT FOR ROWALONG 🔵🔵🔵
I've been asked a few times about the best way to support what I'm doing. Honestly, the best way is just to watch and subscribe using this link: / @rowalong )
More views lead to more views - and I'm really just interested in getting more people on board to RowAlong with. (Make sure to click the notification bell to be alerted when I upload new workouts)
That said, I know that there are some people who want to show their support financially, and as much as I've shied away from giving out links to this before - I've been advised to at least provide the links - to stop someone spoofing me!! So....

But seriously - just keep watching, that's all I ask!!

This workout is provided as usual WITHOUT MUSIC. If you want music, why not load up another KZfaq tab, or maybe Soundcloud and pick your own tunes. As always, follow me for stroke rate. And I'll keep you company for the row with training tips, technique tips, and my usual general waffle.
For more information about drag factor, the plans and what this is all about, head to www.rowalong.com For more about indoor rowing in general, go to www.indoorrowinginfo.com
See you in the next video.
ℹℹℹℹℹℹ - 2K training paces are based on your current best performance to row 2000m. Set your monitor to 2000m and row it as fast as you can. When you're finished either look at the memory screen for that row, and note the Average /500m pace - or just divide your time by 4 to find that out.
For instance - if you rowed your 2000m in 8:20 - the average pace for 500m is 2:05. It doesn't matter if you started at 1:50 and then slowed down to 2:20 by the end - your average across the whole row is 2:05.
So when I give a pace guide saying "2K + 18 seconds" - that means that you take your 2K time, and add 18 seconds to it (in the above example, 2:05 + 18 = 2:23 pace.) Just be sure to set your monitor so it displays your /500m pace so you can stay on target.
Every time you think you're getting faster, rather than just arbitrarily changing the pace guide - do another 2000m test to find your current 2K average time - and then work from that. ℹℹℹℹℹℹ

Don't let a larget stomach stop you from rowing comfortably (or injure you!) just work with it, and if your goal is to reduce it, keep exercising, watch what you eat and hopefully it'll work out for you.

I was at 130kg (290lbs) when I decided to buy my own concept 2 rower almost to years ago. In the meantime I have been fortunate to come across your KZfaq channel and the dozens of extremely helpful workout videos. I'm now 95kg (209lbs). Still got a bit of a belly though. But really....thank you so much for what you do. Please keep the videos coming. 👍

Boy, have I needed this! I'm guilty of splaying my knees to compensate for an overly large midsection. I'm going to work on that part of my stroke right away, just the way you showed us here. Thanks for all the videos you've made. They've already guided me through dozens of workouts, and gotten me (a heart attack & triple bypass survivor) stronger and healthier. Don't ever forget the influence you're having with your platform. You're probably savings lives and don't even know it.

I highly recommend following this channel....so much attention to detail even on the first 1minute. My reason for buying the concept 2 was because I couldn't lose the weight due to Achilles tendon issue.

Another excellent video John, with good pointers on posture that apply to those who are not so waistline challenged. Like you, I need to manage my diet and exercise to maintain a lower weight, having lost over 20 lbs in a year. It does take time, effort and discipline, but the rewards are so worth it. Thanks.

Happy New Year! Thats a creative way to demostrate and attract more to your channel well done! Your point about patience is so true. You dont gain the weight overnight so should not expect to lose it so soon. There are no short cuts

Just came across this-so great! Thank you! I’d never had to row with a belly before we had Snowmageddon here in St. John’s, Newfoundland, and then Covid followed. It’s one of the things that’s kept me from returning to consistent training on the erg to try to get fit again. I should have known you’d have great insights for that too.😊

You are so welcome! It’s not really brain science. Just means you have to watch compression and make sure you’re not collapsing your posture. I hope the fitness returns soon!

Thank you so much for this video. I'm female and have a large belly that I'm trying to get rid of with rowing and biking. I was degrading myself because I couldn't get much of a forward lean to near 1 o'clock and it was always more of 12 o'clock. I feel better that right now at least, it doesn't matter and I need to do what's comfortable with the range of motion I have. I know I'll be able to lean more forward when my belly gets smaller.

Awesome video! I do feel that my stomach somewhat limits my ability to get all the way back up to the machine and shortening my stroke. In my case, the biggest issue is my food choices and 🍻, things I hope to work on this year! Thanks for another great video!

I totally hear you. I just ate (and drank) whatever I liked. But it took the feeling of my stomach hitting the bed first, followed by someone describing me as “chunky” to realise it was time for change. Cutting out the bad foods was a good start. From Sunday at 23:00 to Friday at 20:00 I ate and drank like a monk. But then weekends - I allowed myself whatever. In time, “whatever” got a little less like a binge!! And then it became about portion control. Eat what I liked on those days, but just not a full plate!!!

Lol. Nice and tactful but I have concerns about the carrot. I appreciate this -- I let my weight creep up quite a bit over the last 1.5 years and am now annoyed at letting my belly get in the way of rows and Squats. The reminder to drop the foot plate is helpful.

Thank you for this - just what I needed this morning! I'm just (re)starting my journey to weight loss and fitness and honestly, I really appreciate you showing the "before" picture and demonstrating with the pillow. It wasn't offensive - it was clear you're speaking from experience, and that was encouraging! The posture tips are great - I definitely tend to pull the handle too high, and I have no idea what my wrists are doing, so I'll be watching for that :-) Question: My lower back tends to get sore - not injured, just sore. Any tips for reducing lower back soreness (and preventing injury?) I'm guessing it's a posture issue, but am not sure what I need to correct.
@rowalong
@rowalong Жыл бұрын
I’m going to guess it’s a posture thing. If you have a slumped lower back, all the power and strain goes through there instead up and through your body. I’ve got quite a few videos on here about posture. In fact, look for my one about preventing butt pain. The same applies.

@@rowalong Your here, when Im needing your video the most. If I could.... start 15 yrs ago. When Id row 10K+ daily before waking the kids. Training 30+ hrs a wk, while on my country's National Adaptive Rowing Teams monitoring program. The Concepts Million Meter Challenge was integrated into my training regime. Then .... things happened..... Now, I sit atop an electric wheelchair (the road racing chair I did marathons in, was gone 15 yrs ago), after having participated in many sports, all have been long ago abandonned. Along the way, not only did my stomach grow & grow &.... there are losses too..strength, posture, tone & motivation too. Ive tried rowing again & feel discouraged about not "fitting" into myself @ the catch. Your pointers are clear & "make sense" to me. Adaptive Rowing category "trunk & arms" only, (keeping the legs straight) is a bit more forgiving for a large stomach. I began 2020 with plans for rowing again & now Im entering 2023, 3 clothing sizes bigger & in the "morbidly obese" class..... I know what I need to do, it only gets harder, yr. after yr when .procrastination replaced motivation. Thanks for taking time to make this video for me, & all of us on this side of the BMI range....... where I need to dig deeper inside & find the guts to face myself, and tame the tiger that grew this gut.

Great video. But now that you've touched on people who might not be fit enough yet to train and Row along a whole video with you like a salty rower ;- ) the importance of ALSO working on grip strength in addition to working on diet when off the rower would also be beneficial. I know that "grip strength" seems nutty to worry about when we don't GRIP the handle hard, but someone who hasn't been using their grip for whatever reason -- especially as folks age -- compensating for a weak grip can cause other problems in the arm. If the hand isn't strong enough to hold the bar, other muscles/tendons near the elbow will compensate and cause injury (eg tennis/golfers elbow). If folks are starting out rowing later in life and not in great shape, working on the grip (stress balls, grip strengtheners) while I the car, on the phone, etc... can go along way to avoiding injury. health.osu.edu/wellness/exercise-and-nutrition/why-a-strong-grip-is-important
