Hard material to polish indeed. Just spent 30 hours hand sanding/polishing a titanium bike to mirror (almost) finish. Will not ever do that again unless being held at a gunpoint. lol.

With some wax and a speed controller, you can use an angle grinder with a PSA backer with 220, 400, 800, and then a finishing wheel and you can get a perfect mirror finish.

I was researching turbine blade cleaning and noticed they stop at 600 grit. I think because after that the aerodynamic gains are not worth the time spent.

I'm getting ready to refinish a titanium watch I bought in pretty sad shape. Looking for some inspiration and "this was by far the hardest metal I've worked with. I don't want to do it again" yay 😂

Sorry to ruin your inspiration. A small watch wouldn't be too bad. I'm never doing a titanium sheet again though

@@SweetyPrincessMarghe for sure. I'll ask you to bare with me, I work for ups and work a ton of hours. So I'll reply later tonight with a step by step. It was a really rewarding process and came out nicely. Let me ask first what kind of polish are you going for? Mirror finish, brushed, bead blasted. And if you're not familiar with these terms. Mirror is like you're looking at a mirror where it's really reflective and shiny (hardest one) brushed is like a nice soft waterfall effect (this covers and dents and scuffs nicely) and bead blasted is commonly what titanium ships out like a really flat and dull finish.

@@zaxsp1118 First, thank you so much for your reply! I was thinking about a medium shine, the wire I'm using for jewelry making is not completely opaque and dull, but I wanted to make it a little bit more shiny. With your criteria, probably a little more than a brushed. No problem with timing, write when you can, I am not in a rush. Thank you again 💖

Does it rust or oxidize?
@joseywales3789
@joseywales3789 3 жыл бұрын
Jerome Lawson, Titanium is inert, that's why it's used in replacement joints in the medical industry. It's also strong, tough and light when compared to Steel. The reason why it's so hard to polish is exactly that.... it's hard! So NO it doesn't rust or oxidize but it will anodise well when subjected to heat or electrical currents.

Actually a layer of strongly adherent TiO2 does form on the surface.
@designersmind3140
@designersmind3140 Жыл бұрын
@@joseywales3789 Titanium is not inert at all, in fact it oxidizes extremely easily just like aluminum, and like aluminum (and unlike steel or iron) the oxide that forms (TiO2) is very hard and protective, but it's clear so you can't see it, unless you intentionally anodize it even further to create a thick enough oxide layer to create the thin film light interference which gives you the brilliant colors. If titanium were inert, then anodizing would be impossible
