This guy really knows how to select the best timber for boat-building...this video should be archived somewhere so this data will be preserved for future generations of boat builders. Thanks U-tube!

I love this KZfaq channel. Now that I have discovered it I've been binge-watching and have subscribed. I live on Vancouver Island and own a 40 ft cedar-planked west coast salmon troller that was built by Nakade Shipyards in Steveston BC, Canada in 1969. The boat was one of the last wood boats to be built by the Nakade shipyard after over 50 years of producing wooden boats for the commercial salmon and other fisheries. Nakade boats were built using Red Cedar planking below the waterline, Yellow Cedar above, White Oak ribs, and Douglas Fir and Australian Gumwood for keels, stringers, masts, bulkheads and guard wood etc. I've had the boat for 15 years and do all my own repairs including refastening, replacing a few planks and ribs, chaulking, seaming, replacing guard wood and a complete engine replacement(Detriot 653). For me its all part of the enjoyment. Cheers from Canada everyone. :)

This is pure gold and incredibly generous to be sharing this information. Thank you and please continue. There are many "younger" people who crave the opportunity to learn from master craftsmen like this man. Feeling very humble...

This man knows much more than just building a boat, he knows his woods! Pity such skills are dwindling away, as newer materials need less maintenance. What I admire about this man is the peace of mind he seems to have as a result of his love for natural woods and the application. Excellent man and a happy man, whose ambition is to be close to nature,

I've shown Lou's skiff build to an 82 year old Greek boat-builder (with a few dozen wooden boats to his credit) who says Lou is the best tradesman he's ever seen. And of course, he's right.

What an amazing sawmill. My father was a self employed boatbuilder back in the 50’s and early 60’s. He found other work because getting the wood he needed was getting so hard. That plus the long hours and so many people going to fiberglass boats. He hated working with fiberglass. The cost of those big pieces of custom sawn oak must be shocking. Let alone the cost of many hours of skilled labor. It’s wonderful that these old classic boats can be restored put to sea again. I bet my father would have loved this channel.

Lovely work! As an amateur boat builder and sawmill owner myself, I appreciate your very concise explanation of the craftsmanship involved in selecting and Quarter sawing Quality wood products. Gary "in Michigan", sadly, we are losing all our white Ash trees to the emerald Ash borer.

Amazing! People think they are so smart today with computer design programs, CNC machine tools, etc. Ship builders over 2000 years ago were making ships capable of crossing seas with the most basic tools.

This is easy : Just one piece of wood, a lifetime of knowledge, expertise to match, all in six minutes! Look at those rabbets, perfect enough to go into an art gallery, never mind get hidden by planking. If only Wall Street and Washington had this much pride and integrity.

Right. This guys is a dam encyclopedia of boat building knowledge. I'm guessing 40 years of learning from other master shipwrights. Man alive the knowledge this guy has is priceless. Its a dying art for sure. We need longer videos and a continuation of each project until complete. What I wouldnt give to work beside and learn from a master like that.
