In this video I show how to scrap a transformer for copper with a hack I learned using a hammer! Plus I give some shout outs to other channels.
Hi, my name is James and I love scrapping metal for money. I scrap it all, copper, brass, aluminum etc...
Come join me on my scrapping adventures where I share how I scrap items for easy money. I sometimes will go street scrapping or dumpster diving looking for scrap metal.
Please have a look at my scrapping videos and I hope I earn your subscription to my channel.
Thank you for stopping by and God bless y'all.

Just a tip......when you are down to the rectangle copper winding......instead of breaking the plastic and then pressing the copper wire to a smaller bundle, you can put the copper and plastic in the vise and close it to crush the plastic. That breaks the plastic to easily remove the garbage plastic AND compress the copper wire at the same time. I forge copper, aluminum, and brass from scrap and this has reduced the plastic mess flying around and helps keep copper bundles smaller.

just tried this on a fairly sizable transformer out of a commercial grade UPS. i used a HF machete and a 5lb sledge. it worked. the machete handle came apart, expected that. will wrap in cloth and duct tape. the edge on machete held up which I didn't expect for HF junk. next time I'll use a small hammer. its not about the impact force as much as the repetitiveness and changing angles. overall, yes, it worked and this thing was the size of a toaster!

I just give a 1mm deep cut at each weld with a 4" grinder with the 1mm thin disc then the I part falls off clean. However most transformers built that way seem to be microwave ones and 95% of microwave transformers are aluminium wire bar some of the really old ones.

I usually use a cold chisel to split that weld works a treat. I'll give your example a try next time I have one. Those microwave transformer tops make a heck of a noise if you try to power it up once it's broken. I attempted to make an induction heater for trying another way to melt copper in my crucible. God bless.
