It is a universal truth that all beings seek fulfillment and happiness in their lives. The Buddha taught and embodied this truth and hence many find solace in his teachings and his image. That is why for Buddhists, setting up an altar to the Buddha is of paramount importance for their spiritual practice. An altar to the Buddha is the focal point from which one ushers in fulfillment, happiness and wealth into their homes and lives.
This video guide explains in a clear and modern way how to set up an altar to a holy Buddha image. It also explains how we can make offerings on the altar, how to prostrate to the Buddha and the basic meditation posture. All these practices are essential towards a fulfilling and successful spiritual practice.

Hi Gregory, Thank you for your enthusiasm for the dharma. One does not need so much to begin one's practice? Are you still studying at this time? One can start with a buddha image, can even print out your favourite buddha, and make offerings of water bowls to the buddha. Then for chanting related practices you can choose from the ones given on the blog, TSEM RINPOCHE DOT COM most Kecharians start off with the practice of Guru Yoga of Lama Tsongkhapa and there is many resources about this practice on Tsem Rinpoche's blog.

We all have Buddha Nature in us. Is it not better to treat our body as the temple instead? And keeping our body and mind pure by abstaining from meat intake ( negative energy) and to dwell inward through meditation. Namaste.

Wai Meng Wan If Buddha is alive today, I think he would have preferred us to meditate only because it is the only way to enlightenment. Having an alter is just an old tradition borne out of love and respect for him. The third eye centre should be the focal point, as is highlighted in many Buddha pictures and statues.
@wanwaimeng
@wanwaimeng 9 жыл бұрын
Quansan52 Yes meditation is the only way to become enlightened. From my understanding, we need to have knowledge and learning to meditate on. Vipassana is insight meditation, but don't you need to learn dharma knowledge whether is it theory on no self or the 12 links of dependent origination to have a dharma object to meditate on? Buddhist practice usually involves 2 key aspects 1) collection of merit and 2) purification of karma for Vajrayana anyways. So having a altar helps us collect merit and purify our karma. It is important. With merits we can understand and contemplate on the dharma, some meditate on the breath which is like shamatha, but the concentration is used for us meditate on the ultimate nature of reality. When we purify our karma, we prevent ourselves from encountering a situation whereby our spiritual practice is hindered and remove obstacle to spiritual practice.
@Quansan52
@Quansan52 9 жыл бұрын
Wai Meng Wan Dharma knowledge is wisdom, which is not learned from books or outside source but through inner experience. I am initiated into the inner light and inner sound ( Quan Yin ) meditation, a direct contact with Buddha Nature. Initiation by a true master is the inner transmission Of Dharma. The inner connection is always there, so that is the best guidance. There are 2 types of karma; fixed karma which determines our current life events and cannot be changed, past stored karma are accumulated over the many past lives, can only be eradicated by a fifth level master. that is why most of us are caught up in the cycle of reincarnations.

Can somebody please explain something to me? I dont intend to be close minded, and I hope I dont come off that way to you because Im just genuinely curious about something. Ive been interested in Buddhism for a few years and I understand that making offering to the buddha is a sign of respect, and that spending money on statues is inveating in your spiritual life,, because you poured out money on a statue instead of fancy rims or something like that but.... I see all of the items in the video above and I cant help but to wonder about what buddha would think if he saw how much some spend to honor him. I feel like he'd be flattered that we'd spend so much on him, but hed probably be more interested on our spiritual development, and how we percieve and practice his teachings. Im not trying to single people out, but couldnt that money be put to better use to help ease other peoples suffering? again, I dont mean to offend anybody, but is there something Im missing?

Hello Jackie, thank you for letting us know about your concerns regarding making offerings to buddhas or bodhisattvas.For this question, obviously buddhas do not require us to offer any worldly material offerings to him. They are not benefitted with those material objects, what they really want are our spiritual development, our dharma practice. It just symbols the act of generousity in making offerings to buddhas.We can make offerings in any form: through charity donation as you said or shrine offerings. These actions are the antidote to our worldly attachment. With these selfless actions, would help us to release our selfish attachments. We do not need to spend too much on shrine offerings indeed, we can just simply offer some water to buddhas in the beginning. So I do not think it would cost us a lot. Of course, we offer the best we could afford is the most wonderful things as we are the dharma practitioners, right? Moreover, and this is the most important point, we can create merits through making offerings and so that we would get closer towards the enlightenment.

You make offerings to Buddha, Tara, they pour blessings onto you, both spiritual and financial, and you can help other people much more effectively than if you spent that money on people instead of buying an offering cup or an altar statue. You make a small offering and receive big blessing. You receive dharma and give back gratitude, Buddha gives you even more again and so it goes non stop. If you think like this, it makes sense to buy a beautiful cup your money can afford, fill it with water and offer to Buddha. Water symbolizes your soul, incense is your devotion to spiritual way of living, light is your enlightened understanding, fruit is that your material life is in accordance with spirit.

Jackie Jasso your right the buddha isn’t interested in How opulent are offerings are or how luxurious our shrines look, I just think a beautiful shrine in our home makes it nicer for the practitioner and brings us a little joy, as it’s a place where we will spend a great deal of time as we meditate and progress on our path and accelerate a our learning. I spent quite a bit on my altar and don’t regret it one bit as I think if it doesn’t bring a little joy to,our lives we are going about it all wrong, and as people have mentioned already it will reward us great merit in doing so. But of course as you mentioned, purity of spirit, and love and compassion for all things are the most important lessons, so while we’re doing this I don’t see any harm in doing it in front of something beautiful to inspire us and become the jewel and spiritual epicentre of our home 😊🙏🏽❤️that’s my own personal view anyway. Many blessings to you

Hi Jackie, I agree, I'm a Theravada Buddhist, these guys are Tibetan Buddhists. I'm not saying Theravada Buddhist temples don't have big expensive Buddha statues but our shrines are usually more simple and less elaborate. The Buddha did not want images of him made at all, they appeared because lay people who did not read could not comprehend what a Buddha was, so images were made to show them. If you become Buddhist you don't need a statue just a dhamma sutra and somewhere at home peaceful to meditate.

@gohjacinta28
@gohjacinta28 6 жыл бұрын
Buddhist do not pray to stone. It's a representation of Buddha and when we have a Buddha at home, we will keep reminding ourselves of who we are and the purpose of us here. Just like speed limit. Why do you often keep seeing speed limit on Highways? Don't we know the speed limit? So, when we have the speed limit being put up in highways, we are constantly being reminded that we should drive in within the speed limit. The Buddha statue do not have mind per see but every gestures, even the posture, the clothes are representation of something. For example, the sitting posture is a reminder on how Buddha gained Enlightenment. We should meditate. For example, Islam has surau or mosque. They pray five times a day. They have a wonderful sound system that will read out Quran or prayer verses at different times a day to remind the practitioners to pray and that's very very beautiful. Why is that? Because it teaches us to think of spirituality, think of God in their case. Hope this helps.
