"...if you use it, good luck." LOL. I share your frustration. Garmin makes good GPS units but their software UI sucks camel's nuts. Thank you for making and sharing your how-to video. Thumbs up.

Glad I watched this. I was going to try and edit my waypoints in Basecamp and resend to my little Etrex 22X. I use it for boating. I realize now it would have created duplicates. That would have made a mess and infuriated me. I guess I will have to edit on the GPS using Basecamp and then use Basecamp to back up. We have to have multiple backs to fix messes. To be fair, synchronization has downfalls also. Synchronization poses the threat of deleting everything. If the source is empty, the target gets emptied. For some reason, some programmers don't give that warning for synchronization. I have faced that a few times. All who are dealing with Garmin relate to your satire.

You had me laughing and crying at the same time while teaching me how to use express to get the damn map to work! Thanks man, I was ready to throw this thing across the room.

Thanks for saving me the pain. Great video! Bought my first Garmin product. 66i. Talk about buyers remorse! Garmin's software across the board is complete and utter crap! Gobsmacked. People still say Garmin is the best available. ** IS THAT TRUE ? ** God I hope not.

Sat 103, thanks for the great video. I have just installed the latest version of maps (2022.25) on both my Nav unit (Garmin BMW NAV VI) and my PC. The map displayed from the Nav unit looks different than the map installed on the PC. The Nav unit version shows topographic elevations changes (maps / hills etc) without the usual topo lines. The version installed on the PC does not. How can I get the PC version to show the elevations changes?

On a Garmin automotive unit, basic terrain is gathered from the basemap and not the automotive map. On the PC, you'll need to use a separate topographical map to see the elevations. This site offers them for free garmin.opentopomap.org/ Instructions are there on how to install in BaseCamp.

Good video. How do you add or delete items/icons from the map? e.g. Airport symbols.
@sat103
@sat103 2 жыл бұрын
There are a few ways to change the icons, which BaseCamp calls symbols. For individual waypoints you save, any one can be edited to have its symbol adjusted to display something else by editing it and choosing a different symbol from a predetermined list. If you want to use a *_custom_* symbol for your waypoints, these are the instructions Garmin provides to do that in BaseCamp support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=VTS8XTdjCW5Tx3HyfJ3eQ6 To adjust the size of the symbols on the map, this is done from Edit > Options, then selecting Display and then adjust the size from Symbol Size. Decreasing the map detail level will decrease the number of icons you see on the map itself in BaseCamp. There are 7 levels. Lowest, Lower, Low, Medium, High, Higher, Highest. This is adjusted from Detail Level on the top menu bar in BaseCamp. If you don't have this menu, right-click on any icon in the top menu bar, then left-click "Detail Level" and the menu will appear. The default detail level is Medium.

@@sat103 Thanks for the input. Yep. I get all that. But there is a way to check and uncheck the symbols on the map. For instance, if I don't want to see airports, I can uncheck it and they will not show up regardless of the map detail chosen. Conversely, if I want to see all banks, I can check that feature and banks will show on the map as you increase the detail level. I can't seem to find where to do that.

@@joepasquarello1273 There is no toggle on/off for symbols on the map other than for your own waypoints.

Install the Garmin Express software (whether you need it or not) and that should install all the necessary drivers in Win10. After installing, launch BaseCamp and it should recognize your Garmin GPS. www.garmin.com/express

Your right, this software is terrible. I only just found it existed. If I put in way points and create a route it does loads of random stuff as well and goes down roads I don't want to go. If I click start and destination it draws a route but it's impossible to move or select different roads. If I draw the route manually, I can do it, but then there's no way to join them properly. If I try it generates a load of random crap again. If I try and delete sections it deletes the lots. It's basically impossible to set your own route!!?? AARRGGHHH!!!!
@sat103
@sat103 5 ай бұрын
Not impossible, just not obvious how to do it (at all). Create a route first. Once you see the route displayed, click Tools > Insert. Hover your mouse over the route, you'll see a gray line. Click. Now you can start route shaping. Click elsewhere at that point and it will adjust the route to where you clicked.

@@sat103 Oh awesome thanks very much! Also found how to delete a chunk (ERASE) in that menu as well!. Why on earth didn't they just put this stuff in the right click menu is beyond me.
@sat103

I think all those tools can at least be added as icon buttons on top by adding in "Drawing Tools". Insert, Erase and Divide will be there but always grayed out *_until_* a route is created. Then they all light up.

@@sat103 Thanks. I finally got a route done and got it on my satnav. It seems to follow the route I put, but not 100%. Have you had that problem as well ? Satnav normally takes me 2 miles out of my way, but with my route, its stopped doing that. Though when I get onto the estate, it takes me down the first street off the main road for no reason, the route I put takes me down the second street off the main road. So for some reason sat-nav has decided to ignore parts of my route :-\ I think sat-nav thinks the first road is shorter / quicker, but there like 20 sets of speed bumps down that road, so going down the second road is actually better. It may be like 10 meters longer technically but its a bit rubbish if you want to go one particular route, then sat-nav ignores it. It means I can't trust the thing still :(

If you are using the route on a Garmin automotive navigator (as in nuvi, DriveSmart, and so on), what you are encountering is the Garmin auto-adjusting the route based on route preference chosen, which is most likely set to "Faster Time". The reason it is doing that is because it is calculating on-the-fly what it thinks is a faster way to get from one specific point to another along a route. This is why sometimes A-to-B uses a specific way but B-to-A might not follow the same path in reverse. The way around this in BaseCamp is to use *_more_* shaping points during route creation. The more points you have, the more likely the Garmin will follow the route exactly as you set it.
