Thank you for showing simple ways to achieve this. I never saw using paper the way you do before. Explaining the importance of both ends being even was important to me.. I used tape or hose clamps in past. With them due to their narrow width it still was(is) possible to be slightly at an angle but not see it. I now use the paper to mark a line. After I make the line and remove the paper I then use a hose clamp that I align perfectly to the line.. This helps me to use the hacksaw without moving off the line while I scribe a cut all the way around the tube.. Once I have the small gouge/cut I remove the hose clamp. The clamp helps keep me from drifting off the line initially.

That's a neat trick to line up the yokes at the end by eye. Using a laser level and splitting the line would be a nice addition to line that up as well. Thanks for posting.

Great work! I’ll be shortening a driveshaft soon. I have two driveshafts so I have two tries to get it shortened correctly.

Its better to use a round bar or tube through the eyes of the yokes to get them aligned. The surfaces of the yokes are not that accurate. Other than that, this is how ive shortend dozens of prop shafts and drive shafts. Never had to balance one.

Better than these clowns butt welding tubing together. I have seen some train wrecks claiming to be able to shorten a shaft. I’m surprised more people aren’t injured from some of the videos out.
