Thank you! Great to know the principle. Saved us a hundred quid. In our case there was a decent gap between the door and the doorframe, could see the latch. The closest thing we had to hand was a funny old curved knife bought on a Turkish holiday. Perfect for getting in behind the latch. With a rattle on the door handle it was able to shift the latch a couple of millimetres. Also had a screwdriver pressed firmly on the bottom of the latch, to hold the latch in place after it had been moved. Repeat a few times and open sesame! Also, ignore the grumblers moaning about the video quality, you explain it really well, that's the important thing.

thanks - after locking myself out I went to the lengths of buying a slipping mica kit from a locksmith so I would be prepared next time. I just spent an hour practising and failing to open the door - but the crucial tips in this vid have unlocked the mystery...and the door! :)

Ace! Thanks so much, I locked my keys in the garden shed. Sixty seconds at most of fiddling around with a plastic bottle and shaking the door and I was able to slip the lock and open the door. Lifesaver..

Thank you Sebastian. The extreme cold must have warped our metal garage doors so one side dropped putting excess pressure on the lock barrel so the key would not move it. Everything is in the garage. Food, tools, firewood. An orange juice bottle from our recycling bin worked a treat (don’t think it matters whether it is smooth orange or with bits) and a bit of shaking with the key.

Wow This Worked !!!!!!!! Got a call from my sis about friend locked out of home midnight, snowing and very cold. watched this before going to help,Got empty large bleach bottle and cut it like you said. Got there before trying, told them either get lock smith or break door or window to get in. Then used plastic shim like you said at angle and someone pushing and pulling door at the same time. It also had letter box opening on door to push and pull with. Tried 1st time me on door shim sis on letter box not enough rattle on door, swapped positions massive rattle on door and we all fell in as THE DOOR OPENED ******* WOW AGAIN

Handy tips for doing this, worked for me. A few things that helped were folding the bottle in half, to make it stronger and using the folded edge as its smoother. Instead of cutting a point cutting a smooth rounded edge that’s stronger but still slips well. Finally having someone else shake the door instead of trying to do both at the same time (worked in just a few seconds).
