A good video. If you don't mind a suggestion,You might try holding out a little of your dry soil mix and dipping your soil block maker in it each time before you fill it with wet mix. Just like you flour a cake pan.Your blocks might come out easier. Just a thought.

I also hope my first growing experiment with these bulbils goes well....it Looks they are doing good so far and as long as I maintain patience then the results will certainly be 10 fold. ;)

LoL....I have come to make pretty good blocks now days and they always seem to look good BUT I have the experience to say that just because they look good doesn't mean they are good or fertile enough. Once you get over the learning curve then I think you will like it. I still make them to this day.

Considering all.seeds.come with what they need until the second leaves.comeone..kind of a waste of supplies and time.. .use the smaller blocker..and use sea weed fertlizer and stick them in a good pot or.ground.

Great video. Thought about dried grass clippings as a fibrous binder?
@3basketliving
@3basketliving 5 жыл бұрын
Ya know...that may work. Just have to watch that the decomposition of the dead grass doesn't rob from what the seeds might need or just compensate if it seems to do so. The compost itself seems to be just fine alone by itself so I don't see why it wouldn't work too. Thanks Mike.

Thank you so much for your recipe! This is awesome. Hard to find this info. Im curious at your germination success rates? Also something that could help you out, a rounded trommel made from chicken wire and old bike tires for sifting rather than shaking that softer, you just hand crank it. Could put a small motor on it if wanted. Have a great day!
@3basketliving
@3basketliving 4 жыл бұрын
It's a little comical that you ask. Sorry for the late reply though. My germination rate is pretty great but as you know there's so much more that determines that. When I fail it's usually because I get caught by leaving them exposed in the rain and they get destroyed. Man I've been meaning to build a trammel for a good while or improving this one but it keeps getting put on the back burner. Maybe it will happen when my shoulder get thrown out. Thanks.

I notice your out buildings are car port frames with some custom poly panels. Your setup looks great! Would you recommend this setup for someone on a budget? Where are you located? Do they hold up in the wind and snow? Odd questions 🤔 I know but I have to know! I'm thinking this would be perfect to start a self sufficient 6 acre greenhouse "mall" on my new homestead! 😄
@3basketliving
@3basketliving 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there....I just happen to be going thru some comments here when I seen yours. Sorry so late but I feel I really need to respond to this one. I WOULD STRONGLY reconsider using theses type of poly panels that I have. In MY opinion they are NOT worth the 30-something plus dollars to cover a greenhouse or anything else that you can cover with a good plastic. It only took 3 yrs. for these panels to degrade with visibility and become Brittle. The plastic replacing every 3-4 yrs. is the better option at 1/4 of the costs in my opinion. I am very disappointed poly panels. The double wall greenhouse panels would be the better route but you must consider the cost as well. Hope this helps and I'm not too late.

What's the advantage of a soil block when compared to say what I use a small plastic cube tubs or I use toilet roles cut in half and plant straight into ground after germination . ?

Maybe there is No 'Advantage' unless it's an advantage to YOU. What works best for you with what you have reliably at your disposal to be a little more self reliant. My advantage may not be as such to your advantage. ;) Cheers!

Have you thought about putting a car wax on the inside of the soil block maker. May make the blocks come out easier.
@3basketliving
@3basketliving Жыл бұрын
That isn't a bad idea so long as theres no concern about what's in the wax that may transfer to the soil.

Epsom salts = (magnesium + sulfur) = dolomite = (magnesium + calcium) wash dolomite in sulfuric acid drain cleaner till neutralized and you have Cal-mag-sulfur mixture. Strength of cal-mag depends on different limestone composition but it is hard to overdose with calcium or magnesium, just be careful of sulfur. If it seem like too much sulfur finish out the reaction with vinegar.
