I'm renovating a house and need to blend all of my drywall repairs with the original drywall; which I sanded lightly. I rented a Graco texture sprayer from Home Depot and it cost me about $100. I would highly recommend doing this over using a sprayer with the hopper on top if you doing a whole house. I've left links below to a couple helpful videos I learned from too! As a recap in the event you didn't watch the other videos in the series: the walls that he did not need to do major repairs on already had an orange peel texture. At that point the options are to do a skim coat on the entire house OR orange peel the renovated stuff to match. That is why he added texture to walls in 2023. And yes, paint rollers could do the same thing - but my guy got this done in a day verses a three day weekend. Keep CRUSHING it Mike. This is one of my favorite channels on KZfaq!

I've always done smooth coat in the bathroom and kitchen, easier to keep clean, wipe down easier.

Thanks for watching everybody!! I may have gone a little overkill with all of my drywall repairs/skim coats, but now that I’ve seen how it looks with the new texture i think it was worth the time! Aesthetically I agree, but textured finishes are *way* more forgiving to live in. As great as smooth matte walls look, any blemish/dent/imperfection sticks out like a sore thumb and repairs and fixups are a nightmare to blend back in with the original finish.

I think one textured wall in a room works great as an accent wall or something but everything textured is too much also pain to keep them clean.

Textured wall hater here. I've never lived anywhere without textured walls. I have two young kids and pure white walls throughout my house. The walls are not hard to clean at all. Paint texture matters more for that I would think.

@@dubox37 I have textured walls now in our rental because it's an old building, but when my parents built their house in 2000 did smooth walls, texture was already outdated back then, 23 years ago. I can not understand how people are still using it in new builds, or in renovations.

Some people mix the texture and roll it on with paint rollers. It gives a great knock down texture.

I have DIYed two house remodels but I leave the drywall finishing to a pro. I am in California and pay 30 an hour for drywall finishing with a guy looking for extra money that does commercial drywall. I have never done spray on but prefer the Santa Fe knockdown technique which I think looks much more modern. This house just for the finishing not all the repairs would probably be a 3-4 day job so around 700- 1000 bucks but the end result is a major transformation

I don't have much experience applying drywall texture but i do on the painting/Bed liner side of things. You could do something called a drop coat. Essentially once the bulk of the mud is on the wall get the gun father away from the wall to where the fan/spread is much larger and do quick passes over the wall. It pretty much ends up being a light dusting over the area that helps blend any lap marks that might be too visible.

I like to use raking light in areas that are poorly lit so I can see if my coverage is consistent. Nothing like spraying texture, painting, and installing the lights in a bathroom only to have those lights reveal spots you didn't cover sufficiently.

Looking good I have a graco airless sprayer I invested in 2 years ago and love it ! I’ve done stain on my fence. Primed all my walls and painted them as well. Re did cabinets and trim / crown as well

Hi Mike! In Spain (Europe) we have paint rollers with different levels of texture. The result is a smooth wall with a little bit of texture and it looks great. So we just need to choose the color and the paint roller and that's it :) Now I live in Sweeden and they have the same paint rollers, so I guess you have them too

Hi Mike I have to agree with a few comments and here in the UK like Australia we love our smooth walls as that way we can either wallpaper (which used to be the thing to do and especially if you had walls which were ugly, in the hope that wallpaper did the trick) but yes we prefer smooth walls so we can paint which works out cheaper than wallpapering. However wallpaper is making a come back and alot of people are doing wallpaper for a feature wall. I if i lived anywhere with texture walls i would have to have them either sanded smoth or replastered over to make them smooth and believe it or not it can put a buyer off ie the walls and ceilings. Hey ho tho to each their own Loving the work so far Mike and thanks for not keeping us veiwers waiting so long on this video. I lived in a few countries in central europe, and only old buildings had textured walls, every renovated apartement or newly buit house had smooth walls or a very fine texture. I think textured walls are so outdated but I see them in so many renovations done by people in the US.

Texture is very common in the states, especially on remodels. Yes skim coating takes a lot of time and skill. In this case I think it would be overkill. Hats off to you Mike. Working hard and creating content.

It also blends any sort of blemishes/flaws in the walls. Makes patching drywall significantly easier down the road as there is a 'random pattern' rather than just flat.

The texture also hides blemishes and faults by making the surface "busier" so your eye doesn't automatically focus on imperfections.

It will be great to see the final numbers, even if you rent it out. Have to calculate your labor around 3k a month, and carrying costs. Many flippers lose money or break even on flips, they own a job and take all the risks.

It's so interesting, textured walls are very popular a many regions of the US, but not in the north east. It's smooth walls for us. I totally understand why you applied the texture, Mike, but it's such a shame you had to cover up all your hard work. You're doing amazing and you always have such a great attitude. Amazing work!

Once you give the walls a good coat of primer, that will help conceal the patched areas and the paint job will look good

You spend all this time doing nice straight sharp edges in the drywall , then you spray texture which will make the sharp edges less noticeable and therefore the house less premium looking. Waste of time and money in my view.

Looks really inconsistent…. So many different techniques and strokes - circular,left right ,cross , left right, right left. I dunno i would have done test section in sunlight incl paint finish to see result.. once its on there is no way back… cowboy style but appreciate your attitude- just do it
