Thanks. Started looking for this model late in the year.. Finally Picked one up in November, when I finally located one at a dealer in the back room. Feared tractors be hard to come by this spring because of all the crap going on. Liked the the S130. Thanks for the tips flash info. Only used it for 1 hour before away for winter. Anxious to get it out. Worried about buying a cheap tractor like this. Have a 169 Cub forever which was a beast. Sold it and just wanted something a little more comfortable and lighter. We'll see how this thing runs and last

The S130 is not bad machine for the cost but preventative maintenance is the key. Make sure you pump grease in the front wheels, front axle and don’t forget the center front axle underneath in the center there is one. I’m pretty sure the mower deck bearings are also grease-able. I do have a question as a new viewer, and that's what your personal mower is? I'm a small engine mechanic myself, and I landed with a D110 that's clean as a pin for my personal mower, and if I'm in a hurry I have an SLTX1050 Cub Cadet I put an engine in.

When I choke my S130 and turn the ignition to start it, it takes off at very high RPMs, just roars, and I got to flip it down right away. That just doesn’t seem right in my mind that it should start up that hard. Yours didn’t seem to do that in the video, what do you think?

There are a lot of variables when it comes to buying a tractor. I like the John Deere X 300 series for most houses that have less than 2 1/2 acres in your machine wall. Be there for you as long as you take care of it and that is the key to a long life with a machine, also how you operate it.

I just bought the S170. For the first one or two seconds the engine knocks loud. It has me worried. Do you notice this? I have an old craftsman YT 4000 which is a very similar Briggs & Stratton V-twin. Same size, extended life of some sort and it sounds better at start. After a short time the John Deere sounds OK. Is there some possibility the giant filter on the quick change system creates a loss of pressure until it is pumped up?

Hi folks I enjoyed your video with the John Deere S130. I just bought one of these a couple of weeks ago to replace our 14 year old John Deere LA120 lawn tractor. So my question is : it seems that the S130 is VERY MUCH LOUDER 7:55 than our LA120 even with just the engine running before the mover deck is engaged. IS THIS NORMAL with the new 2023 S130 tractors. …my tractor only has about 5 running hours on it. Thanks in advance for your feedback

You would have to research the decibel level coming from the exhaust to figure that out. I personally do not think they are much different but I never really thought about it either.

I am concerned that our new s130 is rather noisy to the point I went in to our Home Depot and bought some Milwaukee hearing protection which I never felt I needed in the 17 years operating our wonderful LA120 Deere. What do I need to check the decibel level near the exhaust of our new tractor? …and what dB level should I expect with the tractor at full throttle ? I bought this s130 direct from the John Deere dealer, rather than our Home Depot since here in New Brunswick, Canada our Home Depot does not offer the wide rear tires model s130, which I wanted to replace our wide rear tire LA120 model. MIGHT something be loose in the mufflers fasteners or hopefully not inside the engine?? …as of today this S130 has only 8 operating hours. ⬆️ I am concerned Thanks again in advance.

It’s been awhile, but yesterday I had the opportunity to check the decibel ( dB ) operating levels sitting on the seat of my new model s130 and then travel 1 hours to our closest John Deere dealer and their team was most helpful. 1st their sales guy went and got their mobile service technician and the service tech told me about what might be causing my new s130 to be much louder than my 17 year old model LA120. 1st he said in the last 2 years or so John Deere has substantially changed the muffler design on the s130 tractors. Also the engine is operating at HIGHER RPM. We then went out into their new tractors yard and the tech showed me on a new s130 model same as mine where there might be problems causing excessive noise from the muffler. Possible failed welds and loose muffler to engine gaskets. …so after that I had the dealer start a brand new s130 and I checked the dB levels ( with the sound meter apt on our iPhone ) at full throttle & then with the mower deck running. The dB levels were 105 to 109 dB. The dB levels I recorded back at home with our new s130 were very similar at 108 to 111 dB. SO BOTTOM LINE : it appears that my new s130 tractor IS DOING JUST FINE being much noisier than my 17 year old LA120. …so I went and bought a better set of earmuff hearing protection ( NNR 26 rated ) and now after a great visit with our John Deere dealer I AM VERY RELIEVED.

@@JohnsonsSmallEngines I need to follow up on my previous reply post to offer a better measure of the operating dB level of my new John Deere s130. The dB measurements I posted earlier today were measured with the Sound Meter dB app on our iPhone and appear to be on the HIGH side in the order of 110 +/- dB. Now I also measured the operating decibel (dB) levels with the more official sounding National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s ( NIOSH ) Sound Level Meter app for our iPhone and observed significantly lower level readings, as follows: …94 to 95 dB with the mower deck running & the engine at full throttle & I was setting on the tractor’s seat. …91 to 92 dB with the mower deck NOT running & the engine at full throttle. …near the muffler at the front of this tractor I measured 104 +/- dB. So these later figures seem more reasonable & with my new 26 dB Noise Reduction ear muffs the noise level reduces to say 95-26 = 68 dB which I have learned in under the safe considered level of 75 dB. SO I THINK WE ARE GOOD WITH THIS S130 TRACTOR as long as I wear these new noise reduction earmuffs from Home Hardware here in Canada. The different measured dB levels do not effect the good outcome of my visiting our local John Deere dealer to investigate my concern that our new s130 tractor was making TOO MUCH NOISE…much more than my 17 year old model LA120 John Deere. Hope this investigation MAY help some others interested in John Deere lawn tractors.

Check to make sure the rod in the back off the machine near the hitch is pushed in and make sure the emergency/brake pedal is off.
