For single people out there, please don't be deterred by the images we see of families enjoying meals together. I'm always hearing single people say it's not worth cooking for one but it most definitely is. I'm a middle-aged man and I live on my own. Looking after myself is essential because I don't have anyone to look after me if I fall ill. We all become ill at some point but I want to avoid diseases caused by toxic food. I've had to re-train myself regarding what I see to be a meal. Most of us are conditioned to think that a real dinner has to be rich food cooked for long periods. It took me quite a while to understand that a bowl of cherry tomatoes, olives, feta, cucumber and a small amount of bread IS a meal. I try to incorporate as much raw food into my diet as I can. It's still a work in progress but it's a great adventure.

@@deefee701 I promise you it's 100% worth doing. A lot of my meals are simple to prepare. Lots of raw foods combined with lightly steamed vegetables and rice. The trick is to make simple tasty dressings. I also prefer eating from a bowl. For some reason it makes the food more appetising for me. I've prepared, eaten and cleaned up within half an hour and the more I get into it the less I desire complicated food. It'll be the best adventure you take. just try and stick with it and resist the temptation to eat junk food. It's a slippy slope but the cravings do diminish. Good luck!

I am Spanish and Sicilian. I have eaten this way my entire life and never realized it was a type of diet. I am 68 years old with absolutely no health problems. No high blood pressure, cardiac problems, and whatever else comes with being of a certain age. I weight train and do cardio almost everyday. As a matter of fact I am making a potaje this evening using Garbanzos. My grandparents were very physically active in Spain and in Sicily. They continued doing so here in the United States. They always, always walked instead of using the car if at all possible. So,eat this type of food. It's delicious and healthy. Exercise and you're all set. Hasta lluego

The "Mediterranean diet" is a way of eating, not a "diet" to lose weight. When checking the definition of "diet" there's two definitions. 1. the kinds of food that a person, animal, or community habitually eats. The food and drink which nourishes. Or 2. a special course of food to which a person restricts themselves, either to lose weight or for medical reasons. Example, "I'm going on a diet".

My parents in their 70s to late 90s had very little gray hair and looked 20 to 30 years younger than their age. They ate cornbread without sugar, beans, greens, peanuts, small amount of meat and fish and buttermilk. They ate fried foods about once a week. They did not smoke or drink alcoho No heart problems or cancer! They were not over weight and did not think about their age. They were active.and used their minds. They prayed everyday.

Hi I'm Mediterranean and you are right. My origins are Algerian (north Africa) but I grew up in Marseille (south of France, region of La Provence) so mediterranean either way. My Algerian parents have always cooked a mix of Algerian and French dishes and all my life meals went more or less like this: 3 courses meal Entrée(first course): a salad Plat principal (the main dish): a traditional dish Usually with vegetables + protein or carbs + vegetable or sometimes all 3 Then cheese Then fruits for desert. But sometimes the order is reversed like we start with the main meal and have the salad after it with cheese. But the cheese is not obligatory. The rule I had growing up was that if the meal had meat in it I can't have cheese, but if the meal was vegetarian then I can have cheese. But I regularly break that rule and have it anyways And the desert was always a seasonal fruit and occasionally a fruit yogurt(especially as kids) To give you examples: yesterday night I made a cauliflower gratin (cooked cauliflower in a baking dish covered in béchamel and baked in the oven) And a salad made of just lettuce and a vinaigrette that had olive oil, mustard and balsamic vinegar. So we first had the cauliflower gratin with a bit of leftover roasted chicken pieces from lunch And then the salad with a piece of cheese called "tome de brebis" Then a clementine🍊. So yesterday's dinner was more French but we often eat Algerian too, Example of a typical meal: - chorba Which is a traditional soup that has chopped vegetables, spices, olive oil and sometimes frik (cracked wheat grains) + sprinkled coriander - Aghroum A homemade hard flat bread made from semolina and olive oil - ifelfel Grilled peppers that are then skinned and chopped thinly and mixed with mashed cooked tomatoes and tons of olive oil. We generally eat that with aghroum And fruits for desert like oranges, pomegranate, pear, etc.. Sometimes we make sardines to go with this meal either grilled or coated in flour and fried (I prefer grilled) We also often eat couscous with tons of vegetables in it. Baklawas and sweet treats like this are usually just for celebrations or during Ramadan with mint tea. And we don't drink wine as we're muslim but in my family we drink a lot of herbal teas and tisanes don't know if that counts And during summer we eat mostly "apéro" food Like the past summers the fridge was filled with jars of stuff and we then filled our plates with a little bit of each so we didn't have to cook. There was olives (tons of them in different colors), tapenade, hummus, ifelfel grilled peppers, tzatziki, mashed aubergine mixed with Greek yogurts and herbs, bocals of sun-dried tomatoes in olive oil, bocals of marinated aubergine slices, bocals of marinated chili peppers, bocals of pickles, a bocal of homemade Korean kimchi (that's not Mediterranean but we like it), Eggs, cheeses, Greek yogurts, and fresh fruits and veggies like melon, watermelon, apricot, peach, tomatoes, cucumber, small, radishes. We also have a cupboard filled to the brim with bocals of various seeds, herbs, dried flowers, spices, peanuts, walnuts, almonds, pistachios, that we can grab and sprinkled on our food. And basically we never had to cook most of the summer because you just slice yourself some bread, a tomato and a mozza ball, add a handful of olives, some tzatziki, houmous and marinated stuff and if you need animal flavor you just make an egg or open a can of cod liver and that's it. Watermelon slice for desert and you're good

Heart should be way healthier... good luck ... I gotta try Mediterranean diet myself ... lol.

While yes The Mediterranean diet I'm sure is a big part of it. Let's remember as well that in these countries they also have a better work life balance. They have paid time off, maternity leave and possibly even paid paternity leave, seriously lower health care costs, separate sick leave to vacation days. Work time is work time and family time is family time. It's not just their diets that are better balanced their whole life is. Plus healthy food is cheaper not more expensive than junk food. I'm saying this as a Scottish person, but I've learned enough to know that these factors are just as important. Someone on a Mediterranean diet, but without the Mediterranean lifestyle will possibly improve their health but not as much as those making the lifestyle changes too. Love Mediterranean diet foods.

Mediterranean diet is not just the way of eating, its the style of living as well. Sitting down for your lunch and dinner in a TABLE, with your family is a must, ( no trays on your knees while eating on the sofa) taking the time to cook every sibgle meal of the day, enjoying the weather outside, taking the time to chat to your neighbour, enjoying a laugh over a glass of wine and expressing your emotions...let them out of your chest with the butcher, the neighbour the hairdresser...I think is all.that what make us Mediterraneans to be healthy, not just the diet alone

I’m just starting the Mediterranean diet, because I love the foods, my body is craving it, and I am having painful rheumatoid flares and overall malaise, I’m on insulin for 2 yrs now....I just don’t feel well and though I’m 53, I won’t accept all this pain as ‘just aging’. I like to hike, be outside, do things, and I don’t want to resign to any couch or recliner, tbh. I’ve eaten Mediterranean meals off and on and really do love the flavors, and now I’m ready to make it the primary source of food for me. I haven’t eaten red meat in about a year, I don’t eat pork, I’m disgusted by fast food, and I’m ready to eat like this for all the benefits as well as what my palate wants. This video showed up in perfect timing, thank you.

I do not feel so alone now because I have answers to good clean, healthy choices. Best regards, Glenn's Mrs. : )

Thank you for a clear, concise, easy to follow, and very palatable sounding introduction to a Mediterranean style diet. I am a sucker for presentations which list general categories and then provide some specific examples of each. I have long been aware of the overall better health and increased longevity of people eating in this way, and you make it abundantly clear that this is not a difficult diet to follow in almost any part of the world. having no unusually local, difficult to obtain, or highly specialized items. I must go now to seek out other videos from your channel and continue my Mediterranean education.

What a lovely simple presentation of this diet. I have started making changes in our diet for health reasons and will continue to work towards a full Med diet..hubby loves the changes and the food is delish. We had blueberries with whole milk Greek yogurt and a drizzle of honey for dessert…heavenly.

Thanks for the video! I agree, the Mediterranean diet is acknowledged as the best and the healthiest diet in the world. I made this my eating lifestyle many years ago and I have no regrets. I am now 56 years old, I am not on any medication, I have no serious, major health issues like diabetes or blood pressure etc I still look young for my age, and I do have a lot of energy and vitality. I am also quite slim for my age with no excess weight. I do drink grape juice and not wine, but also try to drink as much pure water as possible. And the other food most people in the Mediterranean and in the Middle East are chickpeas (from which they make humus) which is also very healthy. Most of our sicknesses and health problems are rooted in our diet, what we eat, how we eat and when we eat. So I highly recommend healthy eating and the Mediterranean diet is definitely the best diet.

Thank you for this, it was very informative. I was speaking to my Dr about different types of diets and the Mediterranean Diet was highly recommended. It's going to take some time and effort to shift from the "ready made & processed" foods into a fresher plant based diet, but it's something I'm going to attempt. I love that it's more lifestyle and isn't "a diet" so to speak. No counting, no measuring, just be sparing with the junk and eat the good stuff.

I've been following this way of eating for going on 3 years. It's great and have had health benefits--GERD basically went away and I have no arthritis pain anymore (I'm 72). But still find this to be a process of doing what is sustainable to me. For instance, I have more "American looking meals" though they are MUCH healthier with much smaller meat servings, when I eat meat. I think it's harder to follow this in a more genuine way when you have no family culture for it.

I've eaten the Southern American diet (SAD) for 65 years. It tried to kill me. 2 heart stents, HBP, Type 2 diabetes, and Acid reflux just for starters. I was vegan 10 years ago for 1 1/2 years:I lost 30 plus lbs and never felt better. Again I fell prey to the the SAD again and paid for it. Now I'm on the Mediterranean diet(very similar to vegan) again and loving it. I may not live longer but at least I will feel good while I die.
