How to Start Training Your Betta Fish

This video outlines the first steps I like to take when training a new betta fish. The steps are pretty simple, but they teach your fish to engage with you and start following your finger around, which helps a lot when you start teaching more tricks.
Akila is my newest betta, and she has just started learning tricks. So far, she seems to really enjoy it, and she's a pretty quick learner too. We're definitely going to be working on a few more tricks in the near future. :)

Bettas are such cute creatures. I have 6 of them myself, and I've trained one to jump out of the water when I give her a blood work, how to flare at my finger, and to flare when I hold the camera up to her.

Lovely video. Thanks! After watching your betta I've just tried to feed my harlequin rasboras with frozen daphnias stuck to my finger tip - they took! I liked that and I'll certainly do that again. I don't expect to achieve proper training success, because I think it is hard for them to concentrate when they are not alone, as they are too busy sorting out their pecking order. However, they already can follow a target by now - the nose of the pipette, which I've adapted for live food servings. Maybe I should think about something interesting to do with that skill :)

Umm so my betta fish flares his fins at me every time I come by to feed/train and same when I’m at my friends house with there fish. Is it just there personality or does my face just look like a fish?😂

This is super drooper helpful! Recently just got a new betta fish! :D and I’ve had some issues like : it trying to jump out of the tank and get to the snags on the bench silly bugger 😅😅 he is very handsome I have to admit. Ur my 4 year old daughter got Logan (the fish) out of the tank and said mum! I caught a fish! And I said no sweat pea you can’t do that and she put it in the sink 😅🤨🤪😐

I just got a male blue veil tail beta today :) His name is Fin and he is already so active and almost touching my finger if it is slightly in the water. He follows people with his eyes and stays to watch me...hehe. Is this normal for all beta, is he just hyper cuz of the new environment or is he particularly active?

Start trying to train, it will work soon. Yesterday my fish started actually liking me (as an owner) and following my finger. Maybe you should try having ur fish trust you and every time he trust u you give him food as a reward

Try hand feeding its rlly easy put ur fish food in ur finger and put it on top of ur betta be patient tho :)

Consistency is the most important factor. Just keep working at it any you'll get it. I train fish also

If you take it off for a few minutes it will be fine. It usually only jumps out if you do not take care of him properly

I think he wasn’t happy. I recommend trying to bond with him! And tricks are one of the ways you can do this! He will feel loved and not be so anxious. But quick question is there any other fish. If so are they other beta’s?

He might feel very protective and might be stressed. So if there is other fish I would recommend pointing them in a different tank,

It's geared towards betta fish, but it should work for most other types of fish too. :)

Aww I’m sorry keep on trying! Just sit down and try hand feeding him. It might take a while but it might make a bond with him! If he comes over to your hand and then swims back into we’re ever he goes I think you should keep on trying till he eats the food then waits for more! It might not work but worth a shot a?

Some bettas like to flare and nip at things more than others, it depends on their personality. It might not be a bad thing, maybe he just thinks your hand is a piece of food or something? :)

They can be kept in larger tanks. I kept a betta in a 29 gallon community tank awhile back, and he loved all the space. :)

No you got it all wrong. In the wild Betta have large spaces they guard. The bigger the space the better for the betta. Vases and one gallon aquariums are torture especially if you dont change the water daily

@@selin8191 No, they will choose a corner of the tank and guard that as their territory. All the bettas I've had in community settings have thrived. They usually get along great with other fish as long as they're not fish in the same family as them like other bettas, gouramis, etc.
