Tips and tricks: - start - play whatever you want, try stuff out, play melodies by ear (great practice, or even the best practice) - stop thinking that musicians are all geniuses (mistakes are the most ingenious things, unless you’re Bach, or Igorrr) - make what you want to hear - stop fearing stuff. If something sounds like shit, you can always fix it, or throw it away - experiment (maybe the most fun part for me is experimenting, and making mistakes also - you’ll sometimes discover great things by accident) - minor, blues, eastern stuff, epic chord progressions - synthesisze a sound from scratch or browse through presets, playing around with them - don’t give up (it’s a cliché, but it’s true) - give yourself time, be patient (the hardest part) - don’t be so hard on yourself all the time - get a midi controller: it doesn’t matter if you “can’t play” (I couldn’t when I started out), you’ll learn, and you’ll have tons of fun‼! - improvise, try new things - DO NOT NEGLECT PRESETS (learn from them, modify them!) unless the presets sound like shit, that is… - read the goddamn synth manuals and try out everything - use your brain c: this applies to everything in life - work out every once in a while: push-ups, jogging, weights, whatever. Improves your mood by 100 % - write novels like this, keep track of your progress - it makes you see all the stuff you’ve learned Also, another thing: the “believe in yourself” is bullshit - no-one believes in themselves until they gradually get more and more “achievements” and things done that they’re proud of, and even then, especially musicians are usually very hard critics of their own work, and still don’t “believe in themselves”. But that being said - yes, you can do it. You just have to keep going! My weird musical history: I had played the drums in a band for 8 years, and without any experience of making music, I guess playing was in many ways so close to making music that I had initially thought that it was “what I always wanted”, even though I also had this ever growing lingering feeling of "...this just doesn't feel right sometimes, I dunno, something's not right". So, 20 months ago, I finally found my balls and started making music from scratch, literally by asking my friend "can I make the soundtrack for the game you're making?" It's kinda crazy - I decided to throw an impossible challenge at myself, and here I am now, making a soundtrack while I finished my bachelor's degree and have been all the while now studying at my master's, both degrees unrelated to music. I’m happy to say, it’s progressing well, but man…. it's been wild! And the best times of my life yet. I had studied some music theory in upper secondary, but had never made music, other than one progressive piece with piano before starting actually making music (I had no background in that, and I wasn’t a pianist either, nor did I have anyone in my family who would've “seriously” played or made music, or told me to do any of those things either, so to say). It takes the leap towards the unknown to get started, but the thought itself is much bigger than actually just…. starting, and not giving up, and trying to have fun. I had used GuitarPro 6 to make drum arrangements to the band's songs, and I started making music with that 20 months ago. 1.5 years ago I bought FL, learned stuff from scratch. I struggled with a 7-year old laptop that had shit CPU. The first song I mastered using also iZotope, and I had to master it in 2 parts because TDR Kotelnikov, TDR Nova and iZotope ate so much of my CPU :D I split the effects chain to 2 parts, nailed the first half, exported and brought back for mastering the latter half. The result is the first song here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e7yRlNp2z7SZqqs.html it’s prog-rock, with bluesy, eastern, minor and that sort of stuff. I love all kinds of music really. I learned synthesis, mixing, mastering, signal processing, distortion and other basic stuff gradually, and taught myself sytrus too. The great battle against sytrus: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j5aPgNli3t7DgZc.html (I made the beginning synth sound myself from the ground up, a “transformer” from square video game soundish thing to almost a distorted guitar: mod wheel increases FM from OP4 and OP6), and post-processing also (more distortion) Then I bought Syrum, then Omnisphere, and man, I’ve had fun. Although, honestly, especially the latest additions to FLEX (free) are pretty damn amazing, and Vital exists too. You seriously don’t have to buy a ton of expensive shit to sound great, if you just learn the stuff (I’m only starting, or that’s how it always feels like). FL’s sytrus, FLEX, directwave sample instruments, Maximus, and free plugins like coral baxter, tdr Nova, tdr Kotelnikov, HeadCrusher (amazing‼), bitterwseet, Valhalla supermassive etc. get you pretty much where ever you wanna go. But yeah…. serum and omnisphere are darn amazing, though. Getting frustrated and mad while having to study and work while all I'd like to do is make music is at least a good sign of "actually wanting" to make music. It happens to me all the time. its actually my hobby, if I don't feel doing music, I grab my favorite VSTs and mess around and also do something different, to grab inspirations for example watching a movie, video, streams or series. I sometimes step back from projects for weeks and when I open my DAW, i check what I can change or overwork in other projects without stressing myself. I never give myself deadlines, because if I work on deadlines, I mess things up and can't focus about fun stuff.
