Michelle, I have really enjoyed your fitness and health series this month. You covered so many interesting topics and solidified the idea that teachers' health is crucial to help them be the best version of themselves. I'm excited to rewatch all the January videos and implement more of the strategies you have discussed. I hope you and your family are doing well! 😊

I love your attitude and stance on all things fitness and macros. I too have an obsessive personality and I can remember when I started on my journey I was SO hard on myself for my macros and lifts at the gym I began to hate it. Now I have a similar mindset to you memories > macros always!

Another inspiring video! You made so many good points, especially for a beginner like me that is still teaching full time (which is a stress only people who have been in the field could ever truly understand). Last week, I rewatched your macros video in my kitchen as I was making custom foods in my app so thank you again for that. One of the things I look forward to after a long week of teaching is waking up on Saturday morning and watching your new video while I eat breakfast. Then I usually go back and rewatch some of your old videos. Your videos always put so much into perspective. You really should be proud of your platform and how many people you have helped and inspired over the years. I can't wait to see what you have in store for next week!

Aww, thank you so much Katie! I really appreciate you watching and commenting and I also appreciate you sharing your feedback! 🥰 I was in the same boat where I was hitting a plateau with my workouts and then I realized that paying closer attention to my nutrition was the missing piece. It has completely revolutionized how I feel physically and mentally but also increased my body confidence. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions along the way! 🖤

Hi! Thank you for sharing these fitness tips. Can you talk about weighing food raw vs cooked?
@PocketfulofPrimary
@PocketfulofPrimary Жыл бұрын
Hi Nahomie! First of all, thank you for watching and commenting! As for weighing raw vs cooked, most nutrition facts for whole foods like fruit, vegetables, and proteins are listed for the raw version of the food. Some foods lose moisture when they are cooked so the weight decreases but the actual nutrition facts don't change. For example, most meats will lose about 25% of their weight when cooked. This means if you tracked 100g of raw chicken (140 calories), it would only weigh 75g once it's cooked (still 140 calories). If you tracked 100g of chicken the you weigh it cooked instead of raw, you're most likely consuming 25% more calories than you think. Again, it isn't a HUGE difference but it can definitely add up. Hopefully that makes sense!

Hi Michelle. You have had such a positive impact on my practice. Thanks for all you do! I know I want to go back to the gym (I currently make monthly donations) but I am usually exhausted from teaching the little ones and also a bit overwhelmed by the gym itself. Any tips on how to ease into working out again and also where to begin at the gym (equipment wise) provided I can get myself through the door?
@PocketfulofPrimary
@PocketfulofPrimary Жыл бұрын
Aww, thank you so much Kiana! 🥰 I appreciate you watching and commenting and I'm happy you enjoyed this video! LOL at the monthly donations 😂 You're on the right track that you need to ease into it instead of jumping in all at once. If you're like me, you probably feel the least tired at the beginning of the week so to start, you can try going to the gym just once or twice a week but plan those days to be at the beginning of the week when you have the most energy. Once you get used to that, you can increase it by another day. As for what to do at the gym, starting with machines would definitely be best because it's less intimidating than free weights like dumbbells and barbells. If you're going to start with 2 days at the gym, I would suggest doing a lower body day and an upper body day. For the lower body day, you can do machines like leg press, hack squat, leg extension, leg curl, abductor/adductor machine, and even a smith machine if your gym has it to do lunges or squats. For the upper body day, you can do machines like shoulder press, lat pulldown, chest fly, row machines, assisted pull ups, etc. I suggest walking around your gym and writing down the machines that are there (the names are usually written on the side) and then you can go home and watching KZfaq videos on how to use them. Hopefully that helps but remember to celebrate any small steps in the right direction! 🖤

Michelle, I love your channel and podcast with Bridget. I heard you say once that you would never go back to running after having lifted for a few years. Other than just enjoying lifting more, what other benefits do you see to lifting over running? More energy? Changes in body composition? I enjoy running, but I've had lots of setbacks and am considering the options.
@PocketfulofPrimary
@PocketfulofPrimary Жыл бұрын
Hey Andrea! First of all, thank you SO much for all your kind words and support! Yes... that is definitely still the case 😂 Besides just enjoying it more, I have obviously noticed LOTS of body composition changes (I never had much muscle mass when I was running besides in my legs) which have made me so much more confident in my body. But, my body has also just felt so much better... I had SO many aches and pains when I was running and I felt like I was always fighting injuries. Obviously I get a little sore from lifting, but I don't have the aches and pains like I had with running and I haven't experienced any injuries (whereas I had developed a stress fracture in my shin at one point from the impact of running over time). I also don't feel as drained after a lifting session compared to how I felt after a run (especially a long run). Hopefully that helps give you some insights!

Hey Michelle! Do you do cardio at all? If so, how much/how often do you do it?
@PocketfulofPrimary
@PocketfulofPrimary Жыл бұрын
Hi Wendy! Great question... I don't purposefully do cardio. I try to get lots of steps in each day and usually average about 15,000 steps. So I go for walks but at a leisurely pace. Hopefully that makes sense!

I don’t know if you are past your deadline for responses or not, but I have a question… How do you start? I had lost about 100 pounds with more to go, when unbelievable stress attacked me! It was so intense that news about Covid was a welcomed relief. Zoom teaching was playtime. The wild fire that pushed the evacuation area to one mile from my home was concerning, but I just put some stuff in my car and waited. In the middle of it all, my excess weight found me again. The situation continues, at a lesser pace, but I have added in resignation/retirement in order to take care of my 93-year-old dad, who is going strong! I currently have no time to do anything for me (full time teacher, full time Dad support), but I know that without a classroom to take care of, I can make time for me! I want to do it right, and I want to love the process. I know I deserve to have a healthy body. I was getting there, and it was exciting!

Hi Lorie! I actually made a video with my best 10 tips for just getting started which you can find here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sLGmqdKGurCmXYU.html But, I want you to know that first of all, I am so sorry to hear about all your struggles. It is completely understandable that ANYONE would experience weight gain while dealing with incredible amounts of stress like that so you aren't alone and shouldn't feel any shame about it. Since you've lost weight before, you definitely already have a leg up because you know what works. It sounds like you just need to make some adjustments to your habits a little at a time to get back on track and I think the video I linked above would help with that. I would focus on drinking enough water, getting enough sleep, and just adding in more fruits and vegetables to start. Once that feels easy, you can start prioritizing your protein and maybe loosely start tracking your food so you have a better idea of what your intake is like. The good news is... you can achieve weight loss without prioritizing workouts so that could be something you add in way later down the line if you need to (obviously working out is great for your body but during super stressful times, it's okay if you don't get to it). Please let me know if you have any follow up questions! Also, I saw your book pre-order come through... woo! I can't wait for it to get into your hands!

This fitness series has really helped me this month! I think the question about motivation hit really close to home for me! My motivation has been zero lately🦥(got to thank work for that). If I’m being honest, I haven’t been to the gym since COVID (job has me running scared if I ever test positive). I just haven’t been right in my head for three years! Your words are helping me kick my funk. I’ve already registered for my 2nd marathon (DC), and two half marathons (Fredericksburg and Ashland)in the next nine months! I’m also researching Texas races as well to visit family in the not so distant future!

I'm so happy to hear that Russell! I totally understand experiencing a dip in motivation... we all go through that. But I'm happy to hear that this was a good way to get kicked out of your funk. We all need that from time to time! But, if COVID helped you discover running as a passion, that's a huge silver lining! Thanks as always for watching and commenting!

I started using the "Lose It" App and it is awesome!! It has helped me so much so far with staying on track with my calories! Also, I am using JEFIT for my Exercise APP to get a routine set. You are so right about under-estimating how many calories bc I thought I was eating 1500 calories a day, but I was actually eating a lot more. The APP "Lose It" helps me see how much I am eating in calories, how much is protein etc. I can track how much water I am drinking, my blood pressure, my sleep, and other things. :) Thank you for all your videos. Please keep doing nutrition and exercise videos. They are so helpful and motivating!
