Thanks for the video we worked at a tree nursery that grew 30 million tree seedlings a year. Mostly lobloly pine some white pine scotch pine virginia pine and a few white oaks. It was an involved process from seed to seedling. It was also some.of the most rewarding work to be involved in the first step of reforestation.

Holy mother of bass. Your voice has such deep tones that my sub went wild during this video lol. I'm here because I want to try a crazy experiment and I like pine. The experiment is to grow a tree from seed in a ridiculously tiny pot for an extended period of time. Haven't decided on the pot size(s) but will probably do a variety of sizes ranging from one cubic inch up to a few cubic inches. There is a pine tree near my property that I want to use, but I don't know if it is even old enough to have cones. It has cute tiny leaves that might pair well with my experiment.

Hi and thanks for your video. A small question on seed growing - I grow my scots pine seedlings in the small biodegradable cells (1-2 seedlings per cell). I keep them indoors under the sunlight and well watered (room t), but they keep dying. Should I put them in the bigger pot, so the cell can biodegrade, and add some fertilizer? They're 3 months old. Thanks!

Such an informative channel. You deserve way more subscribers! Any update regarding the pines? I tried finding some pine seeds last week but I had no luck. All cones were empty. I think that I will just dig out a young sapling :p
@greenthinking72475 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The pine saplings are relatively the same size but look nice and healthy. Most pine trees drop fresh pine cones full of seeds during the fall time. That being said i recommend you find a grove of the pine species you are looking to grow and collect the most fresh looking cones. After collecting you gather the actually seeds by tapping the cone on a hard surface and the seeds come out attached to little flakes. Since they have been out all winter you should be able to plant them straight away and have a seedling sprouting this spring! I will be posing a video soon on how to extract pine seeds from cones so stay tuned. Best of luck to you my friend!

Hey I have something I think are cones form some type of pine tree maybe european larch, they're pretty much spherical and still green about 4cm in diameter, what do I do to grow a pine tree from them? do I wait for them to dry and open?
@taitjones63104 жыл бұрын
You will want to wait for them to crack open by drying them in a sunny window or a food dehydrator. *DO NOT SOAK THEM IN WATER* once they open, a few seeds will likely fall out on their own, but you will need to peel each scale off individually beginning with the smallest ones around the stem (bottom) of the cone. The majority of the seeds will likely be underdeveloped. Seperate the largest seeds and throw the rest out. Then water test them. Whatever is left should be healthy viable seed. I'm not familiar with larches, but for pines and cedars, I'm happy if I get 5 good seeds out of one cone.

Nice! Right now I’m stratifying Ponderosa Pine seeds I found, and I still have a lingering question, what should you do with the pines over winter if you’re gonna put them outside (like I am)?
@greenthinking72475 жыл бұрын
If you are placing the pines outside for natural stratification, I would recommend extracting the seeds first and planting them into pots. But if what your asking is what to do if your stratifying the seeds now (springtime) and they will be ready come the natural winter season, I would suggest planting them into pots and growing them inside over the winter months. The first year for any tree is very important and the best thing to do is monitor them. Many lightbulbs at home depot and Lowes can be used fro growing plants, I suggest looking up certain brands and buying one.

Hi! I’m trying to grow Picea abies (Norway spruce) from seed. About 6 weeks ago I put my seeds in a damp sheet of paper towel inside of a resealable plastic bag and put it in the refrigerator. About a week ago all of the seeds in the first batch I made sprouted! (I had made a first batch then a second a few days later so they haven’t been for the same amount of time) the second batch has one seed that shows a teeny tiny white bit of sprout between the two blades of the seed. My question is: Can I take them out of the bag and plant them in peat if they haven’t rooted yet but did sprout?

I'd leave them outside. Pines will be fine in cold weather. Also just to point out you only need to stratify seeds this way if you live somewhere where you dont get cold winters. Here in the UK i just throw seeds in pots in Autumn and leave them in a shed over winter. They go through stratification process and germinate naturally all by themselves.

In hinduism they named good trees after gods and banned their cutting more than 2 thousand years ago giving scientific reasons to claim that they were holier but i don't see western people caring about that either in India trees are usually not cut unless there is an absolute emergency or some construction work on government land my uncle and my dad planted over 1000 trees in their life time and i planted many trees on road side most of em survived and many are mature but i just bought 100 seeds of cedrus deodara (divine timber/tree) which is why i had to watch this video.

But proper pruning can help the tree live longer and healthier. The longer a tree lives the more it can reproduce. Cuttings can be grown to make even more trees. Some aspects of religion are quite dated but i get the message.
