Thank you very much, Mr. Tracy! I enjoy every video lesson that you produce! I've just finished preparing master theses in Psychology and I am starting a PhD. I read every day and your tips will help me a lot. I use the following system - I read one part, copy some important sentences and paste in a file (with the name of the book, author, page), then reflect in writing on what is important and what connections I see with other authors, with my experience, with the real life, etc. Also, while writing a lot of new ideas come to my mind when I reflect on the material. I learned this method from my husband, who is professor and has written hundreds articles and several books. Before, I use to read books quickly and almost nothing specific stayed for long time in my memory. Now I read slow, but this system helps me remember, reflect, understand the topic and have new ideas. Another thing that helps is when I read a specific part then we have discussion with my husband on it, so perhaps it is very helpful if people can find specialist in the topic they are interested with whom they can discuss their main findings, questions, confusions, etc. Warm greetings from Sofia, Bulgaria! Hope to see you soon!

I definitely enjoy color coding highlighters when reading and studying. It allows me to quickly refer to those sections and organize concepts, definitions, and examples. For example, blue words are words/concepts followed by the definition in green and orange for examples. I also like writing key words on the margins for a quick recall. I then recite materials and check to see how accurate I was in explaining the material. Granted this is not done in one sitting but my system allows me to look back into books and know what I highlighted even if it was last semester's material.

Melissa, thanks for sharing your technique. I hope you don't mind, I took a screenshot of your method for later review. I use a similar method with color coding, but I only use three colors: yellow for main ideas and/or themes (depending on the material), blue for unknown words and terms, and orange to keep track of dates, times, and quantities. I'll use orange for other pieces of information if there are no important quantities in the text, but I always label what I'm marking for if the system changes.

I started writing definitions of business terms in 2000. The original definitions were sometimes copied and pasted from another source. Sometimes, they were my current comprehension of a term. Over the years, I‘ve refined the definitions any time I didn’t understand a term well enough to achieve a goal. Like Brian mentioned, doing so helped me identify what I still didn’t understand. At this point in time, there are 1000‘s of entries. I reference what I created more often than Wikipedia.

Definitely one of the things assisting me and which I think you mention was for example reading the text and reciting it in your own words! One of the techniques I use to improve my memory is to note down in my journal ten specific things I see around myself in a day. It can be anything from a particular news article that a co-passenger was reading in the bus or the watch a stranger was wearing seated next to me in the restaurant. The important thing is to notice specific information than a general information like "today I saw a red car". This technique has helped me in being more aware and also has helped me improve my memory.

I used to make my own notes while studying and after 30 or 40 minutes session, when i take break and returned back to study, I used to take some moments to recall or refer my notes for few minutes and then moving to next topic. This technique helps me to remember each topic very effectively and I grasp the content more efficiently by looking a glance for 2nd or 3rd time.

A technique that I use to understanding a specific subject better is studying it by combining different methods. For example, at first I 'll read a book regarding this subject. Then I' ll listen to an mp3 version of the same book or of another but still relative to the subject. After that I might watch some videos or live training. In this way I revise several times the information I am interested in with so many different ways, so as to "shock" my brain each time and make it learning faster and more efficiently.

Hello, Brian, Thank you so much for that invaluable set of guidelines on how to improving our memory. I have used some of those and I'm so grateful to you for the ones that I hadn't particularly focused on. One method that really helps me, and that I use, is devising questions for the paragraph and then answering the questions. Afterwards, I check to see if the questions are appropriate for the paragraph and if the answer summarizes the main point of the paragraph. This has really helped me and I learned it in Bible study. I hope you enjoy this information and thank you very much for yours. Best regards,

I've been using the color part for years, I would rewrite information for exams in green, yellow, and red. Green was likely not on the exam, but could be a bonus question that could earn extra points. Yellow was possibly on the exam, but some parts could be left out. Red was basic terms or formulas that would certainly make the final copy of the exam and would be need-to-know. It was extremely helpful and effective for doing well on quizzes, tests, and exams.

The way I memorize things is by writing a list. For example I label what is I'm trying to remember 1-5 then I write them out as 1,2,3,4,5 then I write it 2,3,4,5,1 then 3,4,5,1,2 then 4,5,1,2,3, then 5,1,2,3,4. After that I write them out as 5,4,3,2,1 then 4,3,2,1,5 then 3,2,1,4,5......and so on by then I know the information forwards and backwards.
