FILM DESCRIPTION:
J. Pierpont Finch (Robert Morse) is a lowly window cleaner with dreams of making it big in the business world. After finding a copy of the book "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," Finch decides to apply the tactics in the book to his own life. Soon, he's working as a mail-room clerk at the World Wide Wicket Company and quickly fighting his way up the corporate ladder with relative ease in this quirky musical based on the hit Broadway production.

I saw Robert Morse in How to Succeed…… at the Pantages Theater in Lis Angeles in 1976 while on Vacation. I waited outside the theater and was so excited when he came out and autographed my Program. I sill have it to this Day. This show inspired me to go into the business world as a rookie. Robert Rest in Peace and God Bless You

Robert Morse was an incredible actor. Saw this in ‘69 as a teen. Always thought it wasn’t given enough credit as a real breakthrough as a modern satirical form of musical. New genre for its time. Modern take on commedia dell’arte. Truly brilliant. Was a favorite then and now.

Robert Morse looked like the son of Jim Carrey and Mark Hammil. I saw this movie in 88 and could never forget it. When Carrey made his breakthrough in 94 I instantly thought of Morse in this role.

The actor who plays the Big Boss Wally Wompers name was Sammy Smith. He was born in 1904 and was 63 years old when this movie was made. Look at that guy keep up with a 36 year old Robert Morse! For comparison Rudy Vallee who played Mr. Biglee was only 3 years older than Smith.

Until I saw this I was not very familiar with Robert Morse, outside of his television series That's Life, but I must say there is something very engaging about him in this film. I imagine he was equally engaging on the stage.

I saw him in the bio play about Truman Capote, "Tru." It was probably the best performance by a male actor I've ever seen on Broadway, next to Jason Robards in "Long Day's Journey into Night" as the elder Tyrone, and that's saying something.

I saw him perform this outdoors at The Muny in St. Louis, summer of '70. He was just as good! Amazing, considering he didn't have the luxury of stopping to catch his breath after every take, like they do in the movies.🥵

I vaguely remember this guy when I was a kid. He looked goofy looking. Like he could be in a Disney movie. Later, he played in Mad Men and did a good job playing the head of the ad agency. I liked how he grew into the role.

I made a comment a few days ago on the Dave Sunstrom channel. That the only reason Robert Moris wasn't really a major leading actor was he wasn't "Hollywood " handsome. He was sweet,cute ,quirky and even though he was ninety years old boyish. But he was not Hollywood standard handsome. Hollywood is looks. Broadway is talent. Which is why he was a much bigger star on Broadway. Broadway sees talent and unfortunately Hollywood pretty much just sees looks. Which is sad because we lose so many talented people because they're not quote "pretty".

And having watched a few movies he was in I think he pulled off romantic roles really well. He was very charming and adorable in the wonderful but short lived TV series "That's Life". He was so talented and funny and sang songs so well. He was already 36, 37 when playing this young man in perhaps his twenties in the series but he didn't seem old for the part at all. The film industry was just so cruel. With the talent he had, he really should have been a bigger movie/TV star...

Does anyone realize this is one of the modern adaptations of commedia del arte, the famous renaissance theatre form. The characters are all there - Arlequin, Graziano, Pantalone, Columbina in modern form. The plot also the same centering on how the clever servant outwits the aristocracy. Same as used in The Barber of Seville, The Marriage of Figaro, Michael J. Fox's film, The Secret of My Success, and Eddie Murphay's film, Trading Places - all modern commedia adaptations. (Yes, this is where the Harley Quinn character gets her name as well)

Morse is incredibly talented but there was a long time between drinks. The How to Succeed movie; the Guide for the Married Man. A good 1967. A failed series with EJ Peaker, the next year. At least a few cheques cashed in 1968. Tru was a couple of decades on. Then, a couple of decades later Mad Men. Sort of a Brigadoon career, he wakes every century to give a tremendous performance. What was he doing all those years and years and years in between? Dinner theater with Janice Rule? I absolutely love the little guy but he has had a weirdly volatile career. Wikipedia has things like: helped Marlo Thomas subvert gender roles in 1979. Appeared in two episodes of Harry O in 1974.

He was too much on the screen, it's that simple. The goofy charm feels very synthetic up close. He was really a straight actor with a comic face, cast in a musical comedy. The character in the original show was much less goofy by the way. The screenplay amped up the cheese. It made for a much more rounded performance in the theater frankly. Watching the film now it's pretty painful. The comic book feel to the whole thing just doesn't work on the screen. This won a Pulitzer prize! And it did simple because the show was hilarious - but with all the demanding songs cut - a way more rewarding experience. Ponty wasn't quite so cutesy on the stage. You knew he would make it.

@@jochenstossberg5427 you are discerning and thoughtful but I admit I enjoy his performance here. Little touches like hanging his head lower and lower and then trying to force it lower with his hand as Rudy extols humility. It is very much in the tradition of Zero Mostel who thought the writer was lucky to have him as a collaborator. The opposite style would be Orbach in City of Angels - I was lucky enough to see him in London. Very much in character, a precision instrument of the writer. I can enjoy both styles though the Mostel/Morse approach carries bigger risks. RIP gentlemen - and Jerry.

Robert Morse, quite rightly in my opinion, hated the film version of the show. They dropped five songs from the original score, and replaced Bob Fosse's choreography. So the film was in fact a comedy with a few songs, nothing like the original musical. He felt it was a travesty of the show and he was right. The Broadway show was wonderful, and he was wonderful in it. RIP Bobbie.

I didn’t see the show-I was barely a year old. But I was a young boy when the movie was released and had a visceral reaction to it and Robt. Morse. Loved the set designs, colors and songs. And I had a crush on Robert Morse. I suppose I’m lucky I didn’t see the show, as it might have ruined the movie for me.
