It's a brilliant video, I just took my V8 head to pieces for a really good clean and this video was invaluable. One thing to look out for if your Dyson is old, the rubber seal might come out of its runners but is easy enough to seat it back in.

Thank you so much for this! The clear part of my dyson has been so dirty for ages and its been irritating me so much that I couldn't clean it and didnt know how to take it apart. It looks like brand new now!! So happy!!! 🖤

I had a V8 where the head brush did not spin. It was entirely clean. So I had to strip it right down, and remove the motor. Not an easy task...maybe about 4 hours of work (for the first time). 1. First you have to disassemble all that you see in this video. 2. The plastic housing that holds the motor is slid into two slots on one side. You have to slide (twist, pry) it out. 3. Then you have to press on the two circle areas (while pushing apart the base from the housing), to release the housing from the base. 4. That will get the housing clear, and you can see a rubber plug covering the back of the motor. Remove it. 5. Now you can see where the wires go in to the motor. Unplug the wires, if they didn't come off already. 6. The motor is pressed into the housing and the shaft into a bearing in the housing. Stand the housing upright on a table, with the motor facing up. I put a round punch on the plastic tip of the shaft (small enough to fit through the bearing) and tapped gently (many times!) to ease the shaft out of the bearing. It wasn't easy...be careful. 7. You will have to tap further to get the motor shaft completely out of the bearing, and there are two rubber sealing rings around the motor that make it fit real tight as well. Feels like they designed it to make it almost impossible to repair! 8. Once you get it out, you will see there is the motor, and there is a plastic unit that fits on the end of it. The plastic unit has three little gears on metal shafts that are embedded into the plastic unit. These fit into a gear housing on the motor itself. On my vacuum, one of those little plastic gears must have got too warm, and gently fused itself to the plastic of the housing, so it would not spin (nor could I get it off). It was as if it was glued. I pried at it with a screwdriver, and it suddenly popped off. When I fixed it, I put three very small, thin metal washers between the plastic gears and the plastic unit, so they could not melt together again. I then generously applied petroleum grease to the whole assembly, and did everything in reverse to put it back together. I had actually used some split ring pliers to remove the split ring that keeps the bearing in place, but this is only necessary if you want to remove the bearing. I think (but can't remember exactly) that you may be able to leave the bearing in place. The painful part about reassembly is trying to get the motor all the way back into the housing. There are two holes on the side of the motor assembly. These have to line up with the holes on the housing, so you can put the screws back in. So be careful to orient the motor right before you start tapping it in place. I rested the housing with the bearing down, onto a socket that fit the bearing, but left room for the shaft. Then I used my punch again and tapped on the shaft end (protruding slightly at the back of the motor) to get the plastic shaft (which is attached to the front of the motor) to press into the bearing. After some effort, I realized the rubber sealing ring around the motor was getting caught on a groove in the housing. I took a small screwdriver and went all around it, pressing the rubber ring forward, into the housing. After this, it went in the remaing way with a few taps, and I could put the screws in. Remember to put in the rubber plug that goes behind the motor (from Step 4). I forgot the first time, and had to pull it apart to put it in. The first time I did the reassembly, I attached the main vacuum and turned it on, but the head did not spin! Argh! I took it partly apart again, and realized the black wire had come off the motor. So be careful not to pull on those wires during reassembly, as they come off very easily.

Make sure it’s fully dry and that the brushbar spins freely and properly with the end cap because there’s a bearing in there which should get wet, otherwise the brushbar is all plastic with bristles on it
