My coaches are former Pro Heavyweight and light weight boxers. My coach that is a heavyweight fought Povetkin and Tommy Morrison. They have always taught me to step into my jab and i will continue to do that. If someone is trying to rush in there is no need to step in u can just throw it. But this is the only time i have ever disagreed with Marvin. If u are throwing that jab to be offensive u better step into it especially if u dont have the reach advantage. If u using it more so as a defense to keep people away u aint gotta step into it.
@Switcheroo1
@Switcheroo1 3 ай бұрын
Lol He also said that u shouldn’t move your head off the jab, and I’m like uhhh… eventually someone is just gonna parry that jab and hit u with a nasty lead hook if u don’t implement some type of head movement in your approach

Aligning boxer stance behind the jab is such great guidance, to me it validates the claim that it's the most important punch. Balanced use of the jab for protection, as well as to open attack. I'm gonna practice this as a top fundamental of the game, thank you Marvin. You're sharp!

Mentioning that we focus on the contact and not the form afterward is so true. I struggle with that circular jab motion mentioned. It's better now but it's a bad habit developed early that will need continuous work. Thanks for concise advice.

This is excellent. Thanks for posting, Marvin. Something that I found interesting beyond what you covered here came to me when you described staying behind the Rifle, and how opponents are looking to attack what is exposed. Understanding this could be very useful to counter punching. Once staying behind the rifle is second nature, then you could begin exposing yourself in a calculated manner from behind the rifle to draw out a particular attack from your opponent. Allowing you to then fire off a counter as fast as they've attacked.

i always felt the same way there’s only ONE true jab, and once you perfect it, you can apply the fundamentals from different angles and level shifts. this is why i respect you compared to other coaches on youtube because you know what you’re talking about. not to discredit them, but you can tell you speak from experience cus I felt it in one of your other jab videos I think. I had a hunch on something, and you happened to mention it which made everything click. respect

PURE GOLD, it really make sense, I remember having a sparring with a guy that was pin point accurate with his jab, I wasn't hurt, for us in the gym a sparring is just a game of speed and technique, there's no weight or power behind the punches, no looking to hurt each other but I was kinda pissed with myself for being hit on the head every time, it was frustrating to say the least and the coach told me "You have a mouthful of fist, whatcha gon' do about it? fire back kid!" and I started this, trying to circle around to the best of my limited ability and try to shot at least 2 of my own for every 1 of his jabs, it was really fun, I didn't land as many has he did, but I manage to slow down his offensive with volume of fire, lateral movement, and slowly closing the gap to work the body, still got nailed tho XD Looking forward to the end of the quarantine to go back to the gym and apply all this knowledge. Thank you kindly!
