That's a pretty knot, but not the most sensible to use with the bar like that; you'd waste a lot of time pulling the rope through the bar...and pulling it all back when you come to undo it all. Back in the sixties a Bowaters' 8 wheeler driver showed me how to do knots through the mudguard stays as I'd run out of space on the hooks on the flatbed I was driving. The way he showed doesn't need the rope pulled through and I made an adaptation of it by adding a 2nd knot to bring the rope back out to chuck back over the load. I use all the knots I learned whenever I can today still ( wrapping Christmas presents mainly nowadays) as I love that skill and I remember those days with general fondness ! I've thought that if we had enough space in the garden, I'd buy an old Leyland Comet flatbed and get fit again roping and sheeting in the back garden. Happy Days.

You are correct. Speed is important. The first and last clove hitches are nicely demonstrated but surely there are knots that could be tied in the bight or slipped to save time? A slipped Blackwall hitch through the lower beehive or shank loop, if the Blackwall hitch went around the standing line as well, (slipped for easy undoing). The advantage is it is automatically ratcheting, and self-secure but unties the entire shank hitch in an instant. As for the initial knot on the traffic side, I’d prefer a round turn with a half hitch then slipped half hitch, but there must be quicker whimpering or exploding alternatives. I am thinking of Peter Suber’s six exploding knots. Google it.

Good, but hooks are far superior to rails for roping, don't have to pass the rope round the rail, just slip the loop over the hook, means you can easily use a long rope, with multiple passes over the load.
