"That wouldn't be realistic". The only time I ever have a situation like this is if I have warned the party in advance that there is no possibility of getting through 3 players down. Thankfully, the group I have is rather intelligent and can find work when players are missing. Or we just do a 1 shot to sub for the missing peeps. We only had one situation when a player engaged a fight they could not win while the rest of the party was not there. And the funny part is it was not because the players were missing, they were just three doors down checking out another abandoned house. So what does the Monk do? Punch the spirit that is guarding the book and otherwise not attacking them. I had not even asked them to roll Ini. -smh-
@Limrasson3 жыл бұрын
I did that when the problem player of the group decided to go solo. At that moment the evil wizard they let go had recruited an army of gobbos and laid an ambush on the road. The party stayed in the hills trying to finish their quest while the problem player walked right into the ambush. The gobbos caught him and the wizard made a deal, for his service and help against the players his life would be spared. So the player led the gobbos and the wizard to the player who at that moment were dealing with a necromancer and his zombies. Now of course the player decided to betray the wizard. But the wizard being a wizard accounted for this and used charm person on the player to pacify him while the gobbos and the zombies duked it out. The ranger died to the warlock, the rogue disengaged from the fight and the sorcerer fought an epic duel against the wizard and won. So did the zombies.

Funny enough, my experience has been the opposite. Having ini's rolled individually for a large group of say, 20, has made a huge difference on how my party approaches their encounters and fights. And the real kicker is they even asked me not to use hoards because of how much more difficult the encounter can be. It has become a bit of a norm that the party I have will always have 2 wizards or some other class that has at least 1 reliable crowd control attack. We have a dedicated healer, a character than can fight at range (typically a role passed to our wizard who can snipe with eldritch blast), and a tank to cover the front line. The first two roles tend to fall on people who play a character who can also run in the front line.

Honestly I also like variant encumbrance. I also won't say I hate D&D beyond in and of itself, but I do hate a certain subset of players who use D&D beyond as an alternative to actually knowing the rules at all. This inevitably results in having to explain to them how their character works three times per session.

No joke, I just started a campaign where the DM just said "There's no common language, instead there's this list of a dozen continental languages that are spoken around the world because why would I ever want to simplify something, right?" Edit: I quit the game because half of our session time was the DM boasting about how great his worldbuilding is, it got old very quickly...

@notbob5553 жыл бұрын
Actually, I like the idea of not having common, but having more languages like in real life. Done properly it can help a lot in world building and gives more merit to certain spells, items, and feats. Just needs to be done correctly. If in your campaign you are traveling the world, maybe dont stick your PC's in a situation where they cant speak the language.

@@notbob555 unless it’s abstracted to a degree, or is gradual based on location. Unless you go to another continent most issues will just be slang or things with obvious root words that can Still be understood (the northerners call their leader Jarl and graybeards are basically monks.)

Khaeldranis they’d have to pretty lucky to have little trouble. Umber hulks aren’t pushovers, and their gaze is likely going to be quite the surprise for any character that doesn’t know much about the underdark. It’s not impossible, but it’s unlikely even with good tactics and smart playing.

Khaeldranis preparation can only do so much. There’s hundreds upon hundreds of entirely unique creatures in the underdark. Learning about all of them to the extent that you would know the exact capabilities of each and and every one would take a lifetime, not a quick trip to the library. And even if you could somehow learn most of it, carrying useful equipment to deal with every possible situation wouldn’t be feasible. And in the end, all of your preparation can be for nothing if the dice decide that this is the day you die.
