For low sheen finishes - If the colour is a perfect match, but from an angle, the sheen of the touch up paint is visible, do the following: - Wait for touch up paint to dry completely - Then give it a few passes with a magic eraser The sheen should be reduced drastically, & it will blend in near perfect with the original paint
@howtopaintinfo

Yes waiting for the patch to dry is very important, if the walls have had two coats of paint then the sheen level should be fine, if only one coat of paint then there is a good chance the patch will stand out. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.

Have found your videos very helpful, thank you :) Quick question, if you have an area that was slightly see-through in the middle of the wall as opposed to the edge. Could you use the same technique you used for cutting in and the then stippling, but in the middle of the wall? Or would you just re-reroll that section? Thanks :)
@howtopaintinfo

It depends on how large an area etc, . Yes I would stipple the wall first and see how it drys, you can always roll it later. If it was my last day on job I would roll the wall just in case , I would prefer not to go back if stippling looked bad. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.

How long does it dry? I've patched a small part of my door yesterday and now the patched part looks lighter.
@howtopaintinfo
@howtopaintinfo 4 жыл бұрын
it can take up to 7 days for the paint to cure/dry completely. Doors and trim are normally painted with oil based or water based gloss or semi gloss. Gloss paints can not be touch up the same as low sheen or flat paints, unfortunately you will notice it unless it was on the edge or an area not really seen. Generally if a door gets damaged or scratched I will repaint the complete door . Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.

Great vid! Have you got any tips on prepping cracking/blistering paint on a weather board house that has lead in the original paint layer? I'm happy to scrape it off, but how do you get it smooth... I'm told you're not allowed to mechanical sand when there is lead underneath due to health hazard. Appreciate any help. Have subbed!
@howtopaintinfo
@howtopaintinfo 5 жыл бұрын
Its up to you what you do, maybe full breathing gear and disposable overalls and wet sand it Or you could give it a very mild sand then skim coat it to get a smooth finish. This is from an Australian government website. Wet hand sanding Risk: Dust may be produced if paint is not wet properly before sanding. Fine lead residue is left after water dries. Control: Wear a half face respirator with P2 particulate filter during removal and clean up. Use plastic drop sheet that has the edges raised with wooden studs to collect water. Wash down surfaces carefully.

earned the hard way. I painted my kitchen last winter. Touched up a few spots after removing an outlet cover (which tore up the first applied paint in the winter) and the new touchup paint went on differently. Shadowy. Just realized painting in different temperatures will yield different results

@@howtopaintinfo ‘Does temperature affect painting? Like all matter, paint is composed of particles, and so is the air. The temperature of the air affects the temperature of the paint. When the air is warm enough, it can cause wet paint particles to move around more than they should, thinning the coat’ That’s the consensus I’m seeing online from researching it

Is the paint you applied completely dry as it may take a few days to dry properly. We recently moved into a brand new home where the painter had to touch up some very defects and imperfections on the wall. Unfortunately now it looks way worse than before as it stands out quite a bit. The touched up area is more shiny than the rest now. It stands out a lot at an angle. Our Agent said to give it a few weeks to dry then should look the same. Is that true?
@howtopaintinfo
@howtopaintinfo Жыл бұрын
Most likely if it is a new home they have only given the walls a few coats of paint and by touching it up it now has 3 coats in those area's so that's why it is shiny in those areas. So one of two things will happen, the touch ups could dry down in a week or so, if they don't then they will be there for good which means they should repaint the walls affected. Hi, The shitty painter I hired left cut-in brush marks and also fiber boogers on wall from rolling Semi-Gloss on Non-Textured Smooth bathroom wall. After wall dried, I tried to correct by sanding the boogers out then proceeded to use a Purdy White Dove 1/4" smooth nap 4" long roller to touchup the 10 areas. After drying, NOW I see the paperback sized rectangle roller marks all over the wall, even though I tried to "feather" the rectangle with the roller to avoid lines. Any advice on how I can clean this mess up from step A to Z?....
@howtopaintinfo
@howtopaintinfo 3 жыл бұрын
If the painter only applied one coat then it could be the area you have touched up is showing as being shinier because of the extra coat. Also Semi Gloss is harder to touch up. If you only have small wall areas like bathrooms have it could be just as easy to repaint the wall. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.

Will this technique work with errors made with dark paint on a white ceiling? I accidentally hit my brush against the ceiling while I was painting my walls. I tried to wipe it up with a damp rag and just smeared it. I feel like stippling won't be able to fully over a darker color, but you're the expert!

My issue is that I had to buy a new container of matching paint, and while the color is the same, and I simulate the roller with a sponge, it has a different sheen that is noticeable when viewed at an angle. Any ideas?
@howtopaintinfo
@howtopaintinfo 2 жыл бұрын
A new tin of paint can be different from the one you used but for it to have more sheen could be you only applied one coat and not 2. With one coat it can soak in a bit to the original surface and dull down the sheen level that's why they recommend applying 2 coats. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.

Good advice. However, if the paint isn't flat, you will see the touch-up because of the sheen. Usually with satin or higher the whole section needs to be redone
@howtopaintinfo
@howtopaintinfo 5 жыл бұрын
True flat is the easiest to touch up but the secret to touching anything up is to stipple the paint. The best bet is to try doing this first before re-painting complete wall. Low sheen seems to be ok and depending were the touch up is semi gloss and gloss acrylic could be touched up. However if it's in the centre of a wall and at eye level then there maybe no other option but to repaint the wall. Dark colours are also hard to touch up and it often leads to the wall being repainted. Just remember it can take a few days for the paint to dry properly so it may stand out at first but after a few days it might disappear. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.

Sorry mate unable to like share and subscribe this one . I'm certain you will always see the touch up even using your recommended technique. Especially Long interior corridors with natural front door light on a low sheen finish .. the dabbing of the brush I guarantee you it will obstruct the consistency of the sheen level . However ... I would love to get your thoughts on the different oil base enamels on the Australian market at the moment ?? As we are having a lot of trouble with certain enamel brands Kind regards

howtopaintinfo does this apply over a patch if you have to fill a dent in the wall ?
@howtopaintinfo
@howtopaintinfo 5 жыл бұрын
excellent question, It really depends, if its a tiny dent and you can keep the filler to a minimum and the dent isn't at eye level you might have a chance (you will need to paint over filler twice). What I have found is the dust from sanding seems to spread a little so the area you need to touch up becomes larger so it gets to a point where you should repaint the wall. Repaint work will touch up easier then new work because of the layers of paint, some painter only apply two coats of paint with new work so it becomes hard to touch up. Even using a 3 coat system the touch up may show as being a little shiny due to the extra layer of paint. Its no exact science because of all the variables (different manufactures and finishes) and yes light will have an effect on the outcome.

You can't touch up paint that has a sheen to it. You can but, It will always be noticeable. Whether you brush it or roll it, light reflects differently on the touch up versus the rest of wall. Have to paint the whole wall.
