Guys, having been in BUD/S in the most recent class, I can tell you that yeah endurance helps, but I completely disagree with the ridding of weights. The majority of guys who make it are the ones who power through the two toughest evolutions- boats on heads (land portage) and log pt. That’s where we lost the most guys hands down. If I could do it all over again I would start training early for boats on heads, as would a lot of the guys. We all talked to our master chief about how we had wished we knew more about drag races and land portage and the toll it takes on your legs, spine, and neck. Prep only prepared us for fin swimming, long distance running, and drown proofing. But honestly those hardly helped at all. If you’re at home working tirelessly on pull ups and running 40 miles a week… stop. Just meet the standards for those things and train your neck and legs and shoulders to be able to handle a heavy load The guys who get rolled generally gain weight for their second attempt at BUD/S while they are on hold.

^ words of wisdom guys. I DOR'ed out of 269 back in 2008 and boats on heads and log pt was what did me in. It fucking sucks. I wish I had known how bad log and boat pt where really going to be when I was training in high school. I would def recommend incorporating some heavy overhead presses and heavy barbell front squats into your program. You will def thank yourself later when your running in the sand with a god-dammed boat bouncing on your head.

Taylor Nelson Yeah I second a lot of this. Big three are legs, shoulders, and neck... in that order. I disagree with trying to imitate land portage though. That's just something you have to suffer through.... That's maybe the same with guys that try and prepare for surf torture by taking cold showers... haha.

+Taylor Nelson - when I say weights -- i mean barbell and machine weights at LA fitness style gym. I believe you would do much better with a sand bag, log and ruck. You also have a man up and get the job done.

Before I arrived at the BUD/S center my training went something like this ...6 miles everyday except sunday in boots .....swam everyday except sunday side stroke 2000m.....10 sets of 10 pull-ups......500 flutter kicks.....300-500 push-ups......biceps curls a must because all that rope climbing on the O'course will fuck you up if u dont ...chance youll get bicep tendonitis, bicep curls help counter that again everyone is different but that worked out just right for me.....i weighed 198 at the beginning of BUDS at the end i weighed 175 ha ha .....its fucking brutal....now besides all the shit i mentioned above if you dont have it between the ears your seriously fucked because buds is long and painful.....i lived and breathed this shit ...you have to ! its cool cause when you look around everyone else is just as fucking miserable ...i remember seeing star athletes leave in indoc ....its nuts ! i was not a runner or a swimmer ....i was that fucker all the way in the back with the pickup truck behind me yelling stupid shit to me with that fukn bulhorn lol

I’m currently training for BUD/S. I run 7-8 km 3-5 times a week (I’m an ex Marathon runner so running is not a problem for me). I swim 1-2 km 3-4 times a week. I do a lot of calisthenics/circuit training/strength training (about 5 times a week). Is there anything I need to improve, or do you think it’s a good routine?

zakarias1886 Good luck man. I am too. I have a feeling once we all get there, all the training we did will go out the window and we will realize how much we AREN'T in shape. Just a little advice I found helpful that I use: go to the beach and get in the water. Luckily I live on the west coast so I can go to the beach easily. It helps. You get to see that yes I can swim in a warm pool, but the ocean is completely different.

@Mike Hawke But you can get your asthma wavered from a doctor and be written off as medically cleared. I wanted to join military right after highschool but didn’t because I had asthma a lot when I was young. I recently found out that you’re able to be medically cleared and your asthma could be “written off” from your history when reviewed by the military. So now I’m going to enlist in either marines to try for marsoc or go into navy as a seal candidate. Either way I’m joining military and I’m not going to be brought down by my asthma.

@Mike Hawke do NOT fucking give up. i had the WORST asthma growing up as a child and over the years worked HARD at weaning myself off of inhalers and nebulizers. i did this by removing allergens, and overall exercising. i strongly believe that if you try hard enough you can live without it. I was denied by 2 branches for asthma and accepted by another, (I can run, swim, etc to the brink of passing out without any kind of asthmatic reaction). Everyone is different but I STRONGLY suggest you encourage your friend to try! It can be done!

Thanks for posting a question Gavin - regular pull-ups are great but I like to both mix the workouts and mix the reps. So I use mountain climber pull ups, wide grip, narrow grip, chin ups, ring rows, etc.. and do workouts that require different rep counts like pyramids, death by pull ups, weighted pull ups etc. Check out my pull up videos on this channel.

I'm no expert but I'll offer a bit of advice from what I've gathered. I would recommend doing shoulder press to get the feel for the motions you could be doing with the logs, but don't over do it. Remember to also primarily work in body weight exercises. As you've probably seen, most of the SEAL training evolutions require more endurance and metal focus than strength. Handstand pushups are good for shoulder strength and eduance, but also remember to do different motions to work all the muscles

It's actually not horrible advice, you should definitely do strength training and free weights, but, endurance stuff is really what most military and special forces training is about; they're going to test you on calisthenics, running and swimming, so that's what you should train for to try to boost up. There are instances where you have to lift up 150+ pound logs, but when we're talking about 10 guys or more on the same log, it's really like 15 pounds per person or less, so it's more of an endurance thing. There's also A LOT of running and cardio exercise, like swimming, so running and swimming in addition to handling ruck sacks with some weight in them to get a feel for that and generally speaking just getting good at moving is a good idea. Biking can help with increasing endurance without putting a lot of stress on the knees or back, or feet, so you can get in more cardio than would ordinarily be possible by running alone. All in all, you still want to be as strong as possible, because there is a base weight to things, such as firearms and ruck sacks and boats and so on, but, ultimately most of the testing will just be your body weight and how much you can move yourself around, and less so about total strength. Endurance is definitely something to work on, as well as the actual things you're going to want you to do, such as push ups, chin ups, crunches, etc.
@cjay8087
@cjay8087 6 жыл бұрын
cloudykai. He makes a valid point, you don't need to be a seal to know that. Just watch the documentaries out on BUD/S and you'll see how much the endurance side of it matters. It's a no brainer, so you shut the fuck up, and I say that politely.

Working on sprints will help improve your mile time. If you can lean out some that can also help

Zep: If I were training for BUD/S today I would run twice a week, swim once a week, ruck march once a week and train bodyweight exercises the rest - probably rest one or two days a week. Check out the daily workouts at SEALgrinderPT "dot" com for examples of workouts. Email me and I will send you a free motivational audio.

Coach what is your opion on training with the TRX. Do think they're worth the investment or would bodyweight workouts with running and rucking be enough for training

I’m a husband and father to a toddler. My family believes in me that I can make it. Any advice for a man with that kind of home life in terms of training for this? Don’t want to neglect my family. They push me and say I can do it but I want to do it the right way, ya know?

This is probably an easy question but should I stay away from supplements such as pre-workout and creatine?
@jordanaug81
@jordanaug81 10 жыл бұрын
Creatine is banned at BUDS at least it was the last time I heard. It wont help you anyway and will eventually cramp you up and be counter productive. My advice for what its worth is to go natural and supplement with the everyday whey protein. There are no shortcuts and no amount of creatine, anabolic steroids or the hand of god himself will help you at BUDS.

Ive found bike riding to be mostly a waste of time for both muscular and cardiovascular endurance. It just doesnt elevate heart rate enough nor work legs enough. Jogging/running is the best thing for both by far in y opinion. Nothing else taxes your endurance like it.

I’m Native American and just turned 50 years old. I wished I had tried out for Navy seals when I was younger it’s something I will regret the rest of my life. I might be too old to join Navy Seals, but is there something close to it for civilians?

The test is performed without much sleep each night - so for me I was always tired and had to stand up to take the test. More than once they made us hit the surf and get wet before the test. So i am standing up - drenching wet - writing the answers to the test on the wall - so it would not get my paper wet.
