Learn how to Trim Out a Basement Window with this DIY step-by-step guide. For my basement windows, I used the "drywall return" method.
When finishing a basement, you will likely need to install drywall and trim around the basement windows. However, the drywall return method of finishing basement windows requires no trim. Although there are many ways to successfully “trim out” a basement window, using drywall is both a simple and inexpensive method for giving your basement windows a finished look. This article will also show you how to cut a window sill out of common lumber.
To install drywall a drywall return around a basement window, start by cutting drywall for the top and sides of the window. Cut they drywall such that it contacts the window’s frame on one side and so that it is flush with the wall drywall on the other side. Then, install corner bead and finish the drywall with joint compound. Caulk any joints between the drywall and window.
To cut your own window sill for a basement window, select a piece of lumber that is approximately 1.5″ wider than the depth of the basement window cavity. You may need to “rip” the lumber to a suitable width using a table or circular saw. Cut the off the sill so that it is 3″ longer than the window cavity on both sides. Next, use a router to give the window sill a rounded edge and use a jigsaw to cut the penetrations on both sides of the window sill - leaving a 3″ overhang on each side. Finally, caulk any gaps and paint the window sill (if desired)
This video will outline every single step outlined above - in detail.

Those windows turned out great! I'm currently trimming out a window in a space that will become my wood shop. I used 1/2" plywood to trim out the window. I will then frame out the window with window/door molding with a 1/8" reveal and then paint it white. The only thing I didn't do was have an overhang on each side of the window. These are great videos Andrew. Keep'm coming!

A white window seal reflects more light into the room. White was a good call.

Excellent work. "Ruined...." Ha Ha Ha. Painted sills look just fine (too). and there will be lots more rental houses and fewer lessons to be learned each time you finish one. :)

Hey Andrew, thanks for the videos! Question, how do you insulated between your framed wall and the top of your basement window. I'm doing foam board on my concrete wall but i'm not sure how to tackle that gap at the top of the window that transitions from concrete to window jam and joists. Hope you can help, thanks!

Thanks for the video. I have a similar setup in my basement and want to add window sills and trim to make the area look more finished. I'll be following your steps to reduce bonehead mistakes! Unfortunately in winter you will get moisture issues in to your bottom piece of drywall

Use the scraps from your 1x10’s and make a skirt for the window. Looks dumb without it and probably took 10x longer to finish the drywall under the sill than cover it with a skirt

“But it’s good enough for a rental project.” These words break my heart. If you’re renting out property, make it somewhere YOU would love to live as well. If you treat it poorly, don’t expect any different from your tenants.

Dont return drywall to your windows. It looks like hack work and will almost certainly have moisture issues

I was going to ask how the drywall was being insulated from the concrete. There's no vapor barrier in between, meaning any moisture which is always abundant in concrete would transfer into the gypsum board and eventually turn it into a soft mess. Not to mention that humidity from the interior air would end up condensing just below the drywall on the colder concrete surface. I'd use at least a thin layer of XPS, have it taped at the seams and where it abuts the window frame, and only then install drywall over it. Not ideal either but at least some level of vapor and thermal barrier/break, just enough to avoid any moisture issues.
