This was super interesting. I cannot count music to save my life. I dance solely by the feel of the music. I suppose inadvertently I am counting music because I stay on time, but I can't verbalize it, explain it etc. and it you teach me using numbers, it will throw me off. Teachers who would say pop, ka, tss, bam, etc worked so much better for me.I think it stems from my dyscalculia and my auditory processing disabilities. I did spend my entire childhood dancing ballet and did very well, and then spent my 20s as a professional modern dancer, which gave me much more freedom to dance to songs that moved me, that I didn't have to count. It's certainly a point of frustration for me, and for my teachers I had. You had me lost from the very first 1 and a. Lol. I still found it interesting.

Thank you for sharing that! I am continually amazed by just how different people are in the way they learn and process information. That has actually been a big learning point for me as a teacher because I used to not adopt the “different not bad” mentality when a student couldn’t work with the method I was presenting to them. Now I get that it is so important to be open to what works for others, because our minds and abilities are all vastly different. Most of the time, it’s the end result that matters anyway, so as long as they can get there it’s ok!

one of the things that made me extremely selfconscious in ballet class was not being able to listen to the rythm of the music and this video helped me a lot. thank you so much. you're really nice and the first person ever who could explain to me how this works. xx leah

Have you considered posting some variations for us to learn? I haven't found very many good ones online - and it would be great to show them from the back so we don't have to reverse them! :)

Some people have very accurate internal clocks - they literally can tell you what the time is - Right Now - to the minute. I have this myself and don't really need to conciouslyl count while playing an instrument, but can make an entrance with the best of my fellow musicians. And I'm not a musician formally taught... Has anyone else run into this facility? I was told it was real in some people.
