How to upgrade the hose on a Karcher K4 Full Control pressure washer. Replacing the hose on a Karcher K4 is an easy DIY solution to the most annoying feature of the K4, the stiff plastic hose. Upgrading the pressure washer hose makes the Karcher K4 easier to use, move around a pack away after use. To fit a new hose to a Karcher K4, you will need a hose with quick connect fittings and rated above the 130 bar maximum of the K4. The hose demonstrated in this video was bought from direct hoses but other suppliers can be easily found on the internet.

Ted much love to you! I have had the K4 for nearly 5 years. I just couldn’t understand why the black hosepipe was so horrific to put away! Your guide has helped me to get a replacement pipe and gave me further tips on getting the most out of my good old K4! All the very best!😊

I would definitely recommend at least a 10m hose. The hose length doesn't affect the water pressure. I bought my replacement hose from a company called direct hoses and have been very happy with it. I have now upgraded to 10m of Direct Hoses 230 bar hose. My K4 is an October 2016 model and uses a drum to store the hose. This made fitting of the hose a lot more difficult than the procedure in your video. Sometimes those high pressure connectors can be a bit stiff and the drum got in the way so I was working 'blind'. I got a bit hot under the collar but I finally succeeded. Once the upgrade was complete, the drum was beneficial because it enabled the hose to be wound away pretty neatly. As other people have reported, the third party hoses make Karcher usage a much more pleasant experience. Thanks for your video. No more frustration from crappy hoses.

@@Jonny2400 Hi, instructions below may be useful. These instructions are based on what I remember from about four months ago so I cannot guarantee they are accurate but I am fairly confident that they will be:- Completely unwind hose reel. Use something like a marker pen to note how old hose connector aligns with connector on drum. Take photo of how hose is threaded on to drum. Remove hose retaining clip which can be found on front of drum. Manipulate hose so that about five inches of hose connected to drum forms a straight section. Part hose connector from drum connector. Completely remove hose from drum. Mark new hose with alignment dot that corresponds to marker dot on old hose you made earlier. Suggest tippex is used for marking new hose in case you need to return it for a refund. Tippex can be easily removed. Assuming your have bought hoses from Directhoses; they have a shroud that is useful for grasping when one is trying to remove hose connector. The shroud needs to be repositioned at the drum end otherwise it will be impossible to fit the new hose to the drum as was done originally. Rather than cutting the shroud off, I recommend sliding it towards the other end of the hose. If you need to return the hose it should be possible to put the shroud beck in its original position, so the hose is still exactly as purchased. The new hose can now be fitted to the drum, using the photo taken earlier as a guide and aligning the connector by means of the marker dots. The joint might be a tight fit but if the connectors are properly aligned they should fit together OK. Refit hose retaining clip. Wind hose up around drum. I found that it was possible to fit a 10 metre hose onto the drum. I then fitted the mains lead around the hose , avoiding rotating the drum any further. I also used flexible 'wire' that comes with new cables such as USB to hold the hose and mains cables in place.

Thanks for the great video. I have had my K4 for several years now and have never had a complaint with it - apart from the bloody hose! It is so stiff to use and, as you say in the video, kinks so much when being used. I will order a replacement from the link you posted - guess I'll hang on to the original as a backup in case anything goes wrong but hopefully I won't need to use it again. I use several different Karcher products around the house and garden and the hose on the K4 is the only problem I've ever had with any of them - it works but is just painful to use due to its stiffness

Not just useful !! I'd say essential. You do everything you can to get on with the job and then spend time on unravelling and managing a plastic stiff hose - actually rather silly of the K people .. Anyway on my third of your videos watched today as I just got my K4 Trial tomorrow - hope I'm not blasted away too 😂😂 Have a nice Sunday and thanks for your excellent advice

Thanks for this video. I just took mine out the box and before using it I could already tell the hose is a no-go. It wouldn't be so bad if they supplied a swivel connection to the gun so you could 'uncoil' it without rotating the lance, but clearly they cheaped out.

I replaced the standard Karcher hose with Karchers own 10m hose, it’s grey in colour. I’ve also used the hose you demonstrated. For me, the 10m Karcher hose is better, unwinds better with no kinks, feels smoother too and easier to put away.

@@bigtedshome You were right in your assumptions. I bought the upgraded Karcher hose and it's little better than the standard one. It kinks, it's stiff, it's generally poor. I sent it straight back and I bought the one you are demonstrating here. There is no comparison. It is far superior to the Karcher one.

I'm between washers just now, my old faithful K2 having cracked in the frost. Just wanted to note from other K4 vids i've watched, The hose should route through the casing to the right of the connection, avoiding the risk of pulling it back and straining the connector I guess

So glad you made this video, I used it once and was impressed with the results, but packing it away in a small area was a nightmare, and I’ve never used it again, I hate when companies make something and it’s so not user friendly, what’s the point , are they wanting people not to buy whatever it is they are offering, just don’t make sense

Onto my 4th replacement hose. I did have a 5 year guarantee and karcher have always sent out a replacement free of charge but the inflexibility of my K5 hose bought in 2019 has caused me nightmares. Been close to buying a new model. Ordered this hose as never been able to find one using the metal c clip connectors. Pray it fits :)

Metal c clip in the back of the unit and then connects into the trigger. Another annoying feature of the karchers where they don't have the same connections

One of the photos on the website also shows how this hose connects to the pressure washer.

Changing the hose makes using the machine a lot easier! I would just check that the hose reel doesn't stop you disconnecting the old hose first.

It is a lot easier to coil up than the original karcher hose. If you don't mind the extra step, the best way is to disconnect the lance before you coil the hose. I have had the replacement hose for nearly 2 years now and have been happy with it.

Thanks Faisal. I didn't show much of the hose because there are other options available and I didn't want the video to be a sales pitch for direct hoses. I've had my rubber hose for over 2 years now and have been very pleased with it. It's best to uncoil it before use and to disconnect the lance before coiling up after use but compared to the original hose it is much easier to use.

Useful video. I will purchase an upgrade hose also. The plastic one supplied is not fit for purpose. It is simply impossible to use because of the memory it forms. Karcher could do better.

@@bigtedshome My upgrade hose arrived today. I paid a little extra and got the one which had a swivel head coupling. I’ve just tested it and it’s infinitely better. We should send complaint letters to Karcher about the hose which is not fit for purpose. They ought to issue some form of partial refund.

The metal clip holding the hose in place becomes weak over time and the hose pops off. Just put a cable tie on it at the back of the hose once you have pushed it on to solve the problem

How is the directhoses hose quality doing after using it for a while, it looks amazing but the reviews on trustpilot saying the quality is rubbish and it splits, wanted to get an honest reply and know you will , please advise.

Could it be that Karcher intended that the high pressure water hose be kept in a spring like tight coil when in use so that it automatically recoils back towards the pump keeping it in a compact manner. this would be in the same way that the air line at a garage is tightly coiled so that it recoils on itself.

I can see what you mean Joseph but the hoses Karcher supply with their machines aren't long enough (the k2 hose is only 5m) or tightly coiled enough.

Thanks for the video. I would like to go down the replacement route as well. I bought my K4 in 2019. Used it once to clean my patio. Now, after 4 years I decided I would like to use it to clean my car. I wanted to remove the hose and see the connectors, so that I could be sure that the new connectors fit my Karcher. My trouble is, that pressing down on the yellow button won’t release the stock hose. Same goes for the clip at the back of the chassis. It just won’t come out 😢 Any tips at all please.

I tried it next morning and it just came off without trouble. 😂 I can only attribute it to the white paraffin like lubricant which would have ‘loosened’ up at higher temperatures

I find it easier by detaching the hose from trigger handle then coiling it up like you would let’s say like a length of rope .

The MJJC foam cannon is excellent but quite expensive. If you want something cheaper, the Karcher FJ6 is fine as long as you keep it clean? (run water through it after use). There are reviews of both foam cannons on my KZfaq channel.

I've never seen a K4 with a hose reel. Normally the hose is just coiled up manually and hangs onto the back of the machine. I bought one and unfortunately it leaks at the handle end big time. Not sure if it’s anything I’ve done in fitting it?

It shouldn't leak. It sounds like the quick release fitting has not clicked into the handle properly. Try taking it out and putting it back in with the trigger depressed and the flat sections of the connector in line with the front and back of the handle.

@slugie7934 It's the same hose as far as I'm aware. Some of the photos show a blue stripe, some don't. Mine doesn't kink. My 10m direct hose anti twist fkr my Karcher k4 just blew and only 3 months old, used about 8 times 😮 Can see all the metal wire as its burst iut of the hose. How on earth. My old k2 colact hoses was still qorking after 10 years

That sounds like a manufacturing flaw in the hose. I would send photos to direct hoses and ask for a replacement.

@@bigtedshome I have emailed them so hopefully a replacement is sent as that just can't be right. Standard hose is 190bars of pressure against the direct hose 230bar so should handle a lot more than what is going through it

@DriveWithAndy The maximum pressure that the K4 produces is 130 bar so the hose should easily withstand that.

Agree the original hose is too rigid and keeps winding up in use. I contacted Karcher for advice as I’ve had a K5 since March 2022 and the hose gets no better. Their customer service advice is to soak the hose in a bucket of warm water for half and hour and then straighten it out. Needless to say it makes no difference. I’ll be taking your advice instead and will be ordering a replacement hose.

Just a word of warning, I see your using a stop end connector at the machine end, this can restrict water flow.

Thanks David. I've been using the stop end connector for 2 years and not has a problem but I'm intrigued now. Think I will have to test this out 😃

Mate what do you do it when you take the clip off it won’t come out

Do you mean the old hose won't come out of the back of the machine after you've slid the clip off? If so, try putting the lance back on and releasing any pressure by pressing the trigger with the machine turned off.

That’s exactly it I’ve taken the clip off the back and the old hose won’t budge do you have any tips??

@tomwinfield6908 if you have released any pressure in the system as described above, the only other thing I can suggest is to use a penetrative spray like WD40.If that doesn't work, I would contact technical support at Karcher UK. Good luck!

I only went from 8m to 10m but there is no noticeable difference.

Do yourself a favour get the Grey 7, or black 9 kits from the same company they are awesome pressure washers for the money had a grey 7 for a while now can’t fault it !😉

@@bigtedshome il order one ..also i took the cap from the bottle on the plug and clean system tried to put it in and it wasnt wrking so i pushed it doen and now its bent the nozzle i think one side ..only getting light froth

The original hose is not that bad once you unravel it before use and there is now an adapter available to stop it bunching up.

Thanks for commenting Tony. I have got one of the anti twist adapters but I found that changing the hose made a bigger difference. Using a short trigger gun instead of the lance also helps.
