Much appreciated. Just successfully upgraded from 6-core (Xeon E5-1650 v2) to a 12-core (Xeon E5-2697 v2), no issues. Yay :)

@@poweredbyowc I recall seeing dozens of them mounted on their sides in rack mount chassis at NBC’s Manhattan broadcast center long ago. It was a stunning sight, more like something you’d expect from Cray than from a consumer manufacturer. Just imagine dark, shiny, featureless orbs lined up in an array. And a quiet array at that. Mounted that way their thermal design was easy to plan for in a server room.

Thank you so much for this video. The instructions worked perfectly for me, I was even able to vacuum out plenty of dust! For me though, two of the four screws holding the retaining bracket for the processor had loosened the locating posts underneath (the ones you can see with the copper heat sink). I had to use some pliers and a quick snap with the screwdriver to separate the posts from the bracket. The post could then be secured back into the heat shield plate. After reassembly the Mac started no problems. Very pleased!

I did it! Thank you!! 12-Core CPU and 64 GB OWC RAM. Just should've been more specific on how much tighter the CPU screws should have been, since I scratched the Power Supply's black metal surface with the CPU screws as I tried reassembling the whole things. So I redid the entire CPU part and remade some of the cooling paste. So, screw the CPU on TIGHT, but carefully and in the mentioned star pattern.

Thank you for this video. I just upgraded from the default 6-core to the 8-core E5-2673 v2 because I was having heat issues. This video made it very straightforward. I had no idea how much dust can accumulate in the fan itself, in the top part of the computer. Overall a cheap upgrade this day and age and I'm seeing much lower temps

Thank you so very much for such a well thought out and informative video, lots of love for the folks at OWC and this was extremely helpful. We also made a labeled piece of paper for each set of torx screws and taped them down to each respective box to keep them all together, it was a breeze with your help.

Thanks for this usefull video... I managed to replace the base cpu model by a 10 cores at 3 GHz in around 3 hours (taking my time)... This machine is not an easy friend when it comes to tearing down. I have to point out something not mention in the video : the 4 final screws. When I arrived there, I thought I was stuck. They were full with no holes in them for the screwdriver. Bloody hell ! Everything for nothing... But, if you watch carefully and scrap the heads of the screws, you will see the holes to appear. And then you can proceed. Hope il will help someone.

Hi Ked101! I'm sorry to hear that you had difficulty with the installation. Of course the video does show an ideal installation done by technicians that do processor upgrades on a regular basis. I'm glad to hear that you succeeded in the end. Please note that OWC does mark the 2013 Mac Pro processor upgrade as Involved. It's not nearly as easy a process as installing memory or the SSD in the Mac Pro.

I recently tried swapping a 12-core processor to a d300 3.7ghz Mac Pro and now the pro won’t turn on. I tried swapping back to the original processor and still had the same issue. Any idea what would cause this problem?
@poweredbyowc
@poweredbyowc 2 жыл бұрын
Sometimes it just needs a simple SMC or PRAM reset, sometimes its due to a plug, connector, or card not being fully seated or connected, however sometimes it can be a bit more technical. I would try doing those steps, but if there are still issues...feel free to contact directly as we would be happy to help. (eshop.macsales.com/Service/)
@Revelthebrand
@Revelthebrand 2 жыл бұрын
@@poweredbyowc thanks, I tried the SMC reset - unplug and plug in holding the power button and didn’t get anything. Will un level thermal paste against the heat sink cause the Mac to not power on by any chance? It’s the only thing I can think of unless the processor just isn’t seated properly. What do you charge to diagnose?

Any reason the "kernal_task" would be running at about 86% CPU load (total, so about 1900% in the activity monitor) after the 12-core upgrade (from 6-core)? The machine isn't running hot - PECI CPU 34C, PCH Die 49C. According to HWMonitor the CPU Package is running at about 20 watts.

There are a few different reasons, however many of these are a bit too involved/technical to be talked in this format. I would highly recommend calling and speaking with our technical team (1-800-275-4576U.S.A.) as that way we can have a live conversation and much more easily as well as more detail get down to the nitty gritty.

@poweredbyowc 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment, and no these are not stupid questions at all! It's good to know these things for upgrading your Mac! :) You always want to assemble or take apart computers on a clean, hard surface to minimize static buildup. Also want to make sure you're not wearing anything that can cause static buildup. Yes you can use Isopropyl with your microfiber cloth. We do have a anti-static portable mat here on our site: eshop.macsales.com/item/iFixit/IF1452025/ Please reach out to us directly if you have anymore questions! We are open 8AM-8PM Central time M-F. the same thing is happening to me right now. its not even powering on for 5 seconds. its more like 1 second then off.. it keeps trying to power on then trips almost immediately. i literally followed every step to the T in the video (which was very clear) so i was really expecting it to switch on and be ready to use. and now this. what now? i need my computer ASAP for work! i tried reattaching all the connections. I tried slightly loosening the screws (this seemed to have worked for some people) the only thing i didnt do was apply more thermal paste. please help!!
